boreas
I told you about that FW dread that was supposed to announce the arrival of the new GK Dex. Well, that didn't pan out completely (yet!), but it's still arrived, so I painted it. Here's Brother Praenuntio (which means "to foretell") http://lh6.ggpht.com/_KYc5-ZYzLRk/S-qKdd_q8MI/AAAAAAAAAuY/lWpuxdHMWRs/s800/045.JPG http://lh6.ggpht.com/_KYc5-ZYzLRk/S-qKf0uwRhI/AAAAAAAAAuk/PeKB90DBv6Q/s800/050.JPG http://lh5.ggpht.com/_KYc5-ZYzLRk/S-qKeUo1kSI/AAAAAAAAAwI/M8_7IQ1IVm4/s800/047.JPG Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/201368-while-waiting-for-the-new-dex/ Share on other sites
Hellbreaker
In my honest opinion it looks a bit, uninteresting. (in lack of a better word) There's nothing that really pops from it, the details are there and all but it's not really pulling away from the big lump of silver on the base. I believe the best way to describe it would be that the detail isn't very detailed. It also looks a bit flat. Is the metal and such highlighted? I can't tell. Overall you've finished painting something unlike me, so kudos for that. Cheers! calypso2ts
It is really sharp and I like the NFW on the LHS a lot. I do agree that I think the grey needs a little to make it pop a bit more, it seems flat but that may just be the picture as well. Maybe start with a wash of black across it to pick out some of the shadows? What color did you use for the grey? boreas
Thanks for the replies! The "lack of pop" is possibly a property of metallics... I used a silver primer for cars to get a very shiny effect, then dulled the mechanical parts. Here's a picture of the back as I think the effects show better: http://lh4.ggpht.com/_KYc5-ZYzLRk/S-xtGcCCmRI/AAAAAAAAAwE/X3Vs-WG2o-k/s800/043.JPG The difference between the "armor" parts and "mechanized" parts (back of the legs, the exhausts and the joints between arms and body) can be seen better. I've left the armor unwashed (I did think about a blueish wash) but it's highlighted with mithryl silver (it doesn't show much). As it's highly reflective (no flash was used for the pictures, yet there's a lot of reflections), it gives an effect all of it's own that would be dulled by washes. The mechanical parts were painted boltgun metal and got a wash of devlan mud then thinned badab black. As there's still no solid news of a dex, I'm going forward with a new project: Aduentus (arrival), a FW LR Redeemer! Obviously, the name implies that It should arrived and be painted by August, just in time for the arrival of the codex (cross my fingers!). calypso2ts
Now that you mention them and in that picture I can see the highlights of mithril and what you are talking about better. I like what you did with the mechanical parts (especially down by the legs). Also, for the record I do not want to come off as too negative, your painting is really sharp and is very high quality imo. I just tend to agree that the model does not seem like it 'pops' like it should. Another option may be to highlight the reds on the front to be a bit more vibrant. Maybe he blends a bit too well with the base is what it is? Adding a light blue wash to the armor is an interesting idea as well, but I think I agree with your assessment based on the look you were going for. I might try and find a CSM model to put it as a casualty there. I was also thinking about a banner, but i'm not sur what to use (and "paper banners" never looked good to me...). I'm almost thinking about ordering a FW BT dread to scavenge the banner (and then re-use it when the BT codex comes out in a few years...). the jeske
do you plan to counts as the auto canon when the new codex comes out ? Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/201368-while-waiting-for-the-new-dex/#findComment-2400360 Share on other sites
boreas
You think it won't be in the new dex? For now I use it as so, it gives me good anti-medium-tank, while my IST give me meltaguns against heavy tanks... White Russian
I think its a fine painted model, although the reason others noted it doesn't "pop" is because it looks very solid in colour. Perhaps dulling down the metallic on the edge, or adding some dirt would do the trick. Your model looks not only it is fresh from the factory but it is lit by a projector from every imaginable direction (although this could be the blinding light of shrouding we hear so much about=) ) If you trace the edges with several layers of metallics to degrade the colour it will bring the model out a bit. The gold parts are blending too much with red, if you perhaps would ink them with something brown-ish to dull them down and than highlight with gold and a further highlight with mithril silver (as i understand it is your primary colour), it would further increase the depth of the model's colour. I think that you are trying to incorporate blue too much, hence it looks a bit awkward on the legs and lenses, but that is something minor. While it is a contrast to red, i would not make such small parts contrast that much, they are like little speckles that wont let the eye focus on the model. Why not do something similar to the hosing that you did to the exhaust vents and lenses, if you decide to keep them blue, could be a little either darker or paler. Just my thoughts, if I will have something else in mind I will write. Hope it helped, cheers Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/201368-while-waiting-for-the-new-dex/#findComment-2401026 Share on other sites

Inquisitor Fox
I think there will be better options then auto canons for a GK dread. The autocannon is a very well rounded weapon that doesn't get half the credit it deserves IMO. It's fantastic at light to medium vehicles as well as still respectable against infantry. Having it at a Marine BS and twin-linked is quite a bargain. Even if the new Codex has different options, the Forge World books still allow it, and if it becomes a problem he can always order another turret. I think the painting looks really nice and very shiney! Perhaps incorporating the other colors (white (actual white.. silver counts as white heraldrically but..), red and black) might help break up the shiney, but there's something about gleaming silvery death that is appealing... :cuss I think the real difference is the front view versus the back view. There's enough gold and other trim on the front that it looks just fine. Not sure what would be possible to do on the back though, nor do I think you should repaint it :( Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/201368-while-waiting-for-the-new-dex/#findComment-2402815 Share on other sites
