Messing up the basecoat

Recommended Posts

Hi Brothers,

I recently base coated a Predator and a Landspeder using the black citadel primer. I payed special attention to not using to much color, since the last time I base coated my space marines the coat looked like a crust in some holes of the models. Small, but somehow ugly...

As said this time I used less paint but I still got some issues. On the front of the landspeeder it looks like there were huge drops of color, which just dried as they were. On the top of the predator everything is coated bin black - yet somehow the color looks brighter in some places. I have no Idea how I have done that and how I can avoid this in the future. Since the main color of my army is black, I am not covering this up with another layer of paint, so this is especially iritating.

Any Ideas?

Regards Tony

When you say basecoat, do you mean you undercoated the models with Citadel Chaos Black spray? That can be difficult to get an even coverage. I find the paint can needs a great deal of shaking to get it dispersed enough to go on right.

However, if you're just painting chaos black onto bare plastic, you will have problems. The chaos black paint is good but it wont cover perfectly in one coat. It needs at least two....normally more if you thin down the paint for a smooth layer. This will also give you problems as the thinner the paint, the more chance it is that the paint film will dewet and break up into droplets on the surface. IMO, when painting black, undercoat black spray then base coat with a few layers of thinned down 50:50 mixture of black and regal blue. This creates a "cool" black colour that takes highlights very nicely. Thats how i do black armour and thats how my death company will be painted.

Temperature... Shaking the can well... Distance from models to nozzel... All these can affect how it works. If possible spray in an area thats wind-free (though you will still need fresh air or you'll get poisoned), with a temp of 15 degrees c or more (IIRC), about 12" (maybe more?) between models and can, and really shake it for 2 mins beofre spraying and intermittently during spraying...

You might also be having issues with humidity. I don't have scientific proof for this, but I've had issues with the consistency of primer when it's humid out.

I'd also suggest shooting a little paint onto a scrap of newspaper or something, some sprays take a sec to get to consistent.

The problem is Games Workshop's Chaos Black "Primer" is literally just Chaos Black paint in aerosol form. It's paint in a can, and not actually a proper primer.

I would recommend you look into alternative means of priming your models (for example, Krylon makes a fantastic and cheap Matte Black primer, available from places like Canadian Tire or Home Depot for $6 CDN).
