3rd Scenario in Ard Boyz

I noticed a good bit of space wolf players use mechanized lists or at least fast moving lists( with TWC and all that) How did you all handle the 3rd scenario in Ard Boyz where anything that moves over 6in gives away 3 kp? After the game I realized I should have just hidden the transports and foot slogged.

Tabled my opponent. I just killed him before he killed me. My speeders and razorback killed his tanks. Arjac and his greyhunters was like king Leonidies in 300. His squad charged 20 terminators, and he lived until the second round of combat. Giving enough time for my TWC to roll up and take em out. I took second overall.

'I just tabled him' isn't really a good response in my opinion... Because about every question in Warhammer can be answered with, 'Just table him'. Now, assuming your not playing someone with the tactical prowess of a junior mint the correct response to your question should be something like...

When I noticed the third scenario before the tourney I was actually planning on taking my BA. But, with something like 40+ KP to give in the last scenario I opted for a drop pod SW list instead. I was conflicted on who to take but when I saw the scenario lineup it screamed Grey Hunters for a first round possible massacre, and low KP for a last round likely massacre. I did take 1 thing worth 3 KP, a land raider crusader, because I found Ragnars capabilities being greatly diminished because of it.

It did make the first two scenarios a little more difficult for me not being mobile but the Drop Pods got me where I needed and I just tried to isolate things where I could. In the first scenario it was easy enough - drop Grey Hunters on objectives, let opponents attempt to remove. Wasn't too bad but 20 Knob bikers might have done it if not for Logan, Relentless Melta Long Fangs, and JoTWW.

In the last round I ended up playing a total git and a blatant cheater - the people at the table next to me didn't even know how to respond when they saw what he was doing and I was getting sick of calling him on it, then arguing, so I eventually just stop saying anything. I was able to pull out a minor victory, being 1 KP away from a major victory and some really bad rolling against rhinos away from a massacre. I was able to do this because of the total possibility KP disparity was huge. I think he had as many KP in transports as I had on the table. I ended up placing and was glad that I had the opportunity of going through him to do so.

So, long answer short: I didn't take things worth 3 KP and killed things in his army that where worth 3 - even if it was a suicide attempt from the get go. Idiot and slightly arrogant answer: Just table him.

I did table my opponent. My list had 33 kill points in that scenario. I chose not to play kill point denial by altering my list. I chose to try to protect my 3 kp items as best I could.

I did this through deployment, stormcaller, and movement and unit positioning through the 1st few turns until I felt I had the advantage and took the fight to my opponent.

Two land raiders block a lot of line of sight. They are tough. Stormcaller was a godsend in the 2nd and 3 scenario for me. The lead landraider takes a 5 up cover and gives my second one and the razorbacks a 4 + cover. If i needed I pulled one of the razorbacks up and popped smoke to help protect one of the land raiders from massed AT fire. When you take into account that if you don't stop the land raiders i'm pouring a cracked up GH squad in your face, or the nasty slavering TWC come charging out from behind makes a huge difference. Charging multiple squads/vehicles to stop shooting was another key difference.

My TWC claimed quite a few vehicles simply because 7 of those is kind of a big footprint and can touch lots of things. Str 5 with rending can absolutlely tear through rear armor 10 pretty easy. 6 attacks on the charge when you only need a 4 to hit can be a bad thing for your opponent.

I got massacred by an outflanking tyranid force with only one "fast" unit, I was playing drop pods with three tanks and a skyclaw pack, I made the mistake of podding in, and he destroyed them all at once, at the top of turn three, we had run out of time, my skyclaws hadn't come in yet, my razorbacks and whirlwind were being assaulted, and bjorn was immobilized, the rest was gone. :)

My Land Speeder squadron crashed and burned on their deep strike entry. My bikes.. eh.. with all the cover around, it was very difficult for the Chaos Marines player to kill them. Bikes lasted to Turn 5.

I was tabled. I learned the tough way to get away from drop pods once they are down. One of mine exploded in a 6-inch area around the thing, killing four of my marines and three of his.

Props to my Predator and Vindicator, though. Vindicator shot scattered seven inches from an enemy Annihilator (Which would have put the shot THROUGH a building) and wrecked a Rhino. My Predator just refused to go down. Every lascannon and missile launcher he shot at it with all missed, or didn't do enough damage.

I played against a Tyranid player with 2 fast units. By the end of the game he had 1 termagant spawning HQ 1 Venomthrope 1Trygon 2 created termagant broods 1 genestealer unit. End game all I had left was Wolf Priest Locked with the spawning HQ, Long Fangs, Ven Dread, Blood Claws, and 1 rhino. If it wasnt for the rules involving "fast" units the game would have been a draw. Instead it was a massacre.

Best part of the game was either my swiftclaws killing a Trygon Prime all alone, or my WGBL standing against a horde of almost 30 created termagants after he squad was killed. He died eventually but it was fun to look at.

I also tabled my opponent. I made no list alterations (I had three Land Raiders and TWC with three ICs on TWMs for my "fast" units). During the game, I lost one Land Raider, everything else survived and his army was completely annihilated. He had Chaos Marines with two Land Raiders, several Rhinos, and double-Lash Princes.

I had one friend who had 51 KPs in his list. He made no changes and also tabled his opponent, taking first. I forget what army he was using, though.

Well, my list was already pretty hard to begin with, so I wasn't really worried. If that mission was in the semi-finals or the finals, then it probably would have made a difference for me. As it was, nobody I faced really fielded anything that would have been a major threat to me.
I did drop 7 kp out of my list after seeing scenario 3(-3x RB + 1RP = 7kp) but it turned out to be a better list anyways. I didn't really play that game any different then I did the others and I wasn't worried about him poping my transports. If he was concentrating on my rhinos that would have let my LFs fire away unharmed(which really they did anyways). That being said his only real long range fire power was 6 oblits and a raider(I popped the raider first turn). He could've killed all 6 of my rhinos but I don't think the oblits would've lasted too lang with LOS to the rhinos since anything that could see the rhinos was going to be seen by the LFs. All in all I liked the mission and I don't think it really matter that my fast stuff was worth 3 kp cause if he didn't concede on turn 5 I could've gotten double his kp and he had less things worth 3 kp, most of which was harder to kill then my AV11 rhinos :)

I had 42 KP with my list in that scenario

I lucked out and played a Blood Angel player with very little long range shooting.

I deployed on my table edge and waited for my shooting to take out his vehicles before I started to move forward.

Then i pressed with my close combat.

I ended up getting a massacre on him.

Thank you for indulging me. This should have been your original response. Table him or not the way you handled the scenario was psychic powers, strategic use of cover on 3KP units, and multi-charges to engage in assault with ranged threats. Something like that really is more helpful than your first answer. I'm glad the scenario went well for you.

For some of us, Saphius, our entire strategy is "Table 'em." Kill everything they have, no matter the scenario. Don't care about KPs, just kill everything.

If I were to indulge in my personal strategy, it would have been something along the lines of "Focus Long Fangs on tanks. Focus Grey Hunters, Lone Wolves, and ICs on individual enemy squads, wiping through them one by one, until they didn't have anything left. If they had things left at the end of the battle, then worry about KPs."

Not all of us play by missions, mate. :P

I played a Daemon list for the 3rd round. Tabling them is always a viable tactic. I didn't change my list for the 3rd mission. My first round opponent was Darkwynn, the current Ard Boyz and Gladiator Champ. He got max points off of me. I got max points my 2nd and 3rd games. I ended up in 4th.
