reddrago99
Hello, I have been gathering things up for my first 40K army in many moons. I have been reading different forums and have come across several mentions of how fine the pigment is in the Vallejo Air line of paints (specifically the metallics). I looked around the web and have not found a direct answer to the following question. Has anyone used the Vallejo Air paints with a brush, if so was there a noticable difference in the metallic colors? I am just curious if anyone has tried it before. Since the army I have planned will be using a ton of metallics, I was just looking at options before I sit down and begin. jah-joshua
they work just fine with a brush... i've not tried them with an airbrush, so i don't know if the hue is less intense when sprayed... all i can say is that they are powerful colors when brushed on... the paint is super smooth, and a joy to work with... i use the Gold, and the Aluminium... the Gold only works for me as a highlight, as i like darker colors... the Aluminium is used as my final highlight on all metals... a description of my first try with these paints, and some shots of my experiments and results can be found here: http://jahminis.blogspot.com/ hope that helps... cheers jah Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/201645-vallejo-air-without-a-airbrush/#findComment-2402431 Share on other sites
GumbaFish
Interesting information over there on your site Jah, thanks for linking that. I have wondered about the VMA line as well so it is nice to know someone else has tried them with a brush. If you happen to check back and it isn't too off topic to the thread I was curious what you meant about some of the P3 metallics being so hard to find. Does that mean they are always sold out, or they are so inconsistant that its just hard to find one that is actually from a good batch? I've been having to deal with a very limited assortment of metals for some time and have been thinking what lines I'd like to try to use to get some new colors and have had good luck with other P3 paints. jah-joshua
some of the metals are being reformulated (i'm told), but i'm not sure what the status is right now... i will have to see what Ron Kruzie has to say about that... there was a problem with some of the metals being very chunky, and even the odd explosion here and there!!! Rhulic Gold, Solid Gold, Blighted Gold, and Molten Bronze seem to be missing from shops that keep a current stock... Rhulic is my favorite base for Golds, as it has a nice deep tone... the entire line of metals is still available at chaosorc.com... i can't vouch for which batch they are from, but at $2.25 a pot it's not a huge risk... even chunky paints can be saved with some water and mixing medium... my pot of Rhulic is from 2006, and is just starting to get chunky... right now, my range of brands for metals is P3, Gw, and Vallejo Model Air... for Silvers i use P3 Pig Iron as a base, then GW Blotgun Metal as a midtone, and VMA Aluminium as a highlight... for Gold it would be P3 Rhulic Gold as a base, Rhulic and VMA Gold (2-1 mix) for a midtone, VMA Gold as a highlight, and VMA Aluminium as a fine highlight... i play around with different colors of washes for a bit of variation as well... P3 Armor Wash and Vallejo Smoke on my Silvers, and P3 Flesh Wash and GW Leviathan Purple Wash on my Golds... hope that helps... cheers jah Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/201645-vallejo-air-without-a-airbrush/#findComment-2403022 Share on other sites
