40mm factory bases

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

Long time no posting, though I've been peeking around :P

I play a Deathwing and was not happy with how it looked, so I stripped the paint, removed the bases and primed my 40 termies :)

But... I thought, "this sand looks a bit lame... can't I do something with a bit more personality?"

Here is what I came up with:

http://i677.photobucket.com/albums/vv140/T3mp4n0/IMG00023-20100516-1851.jpg?t=1274129287

Its supposed to be an old factory. The idea is to paint:

- the floor with black ink, then (not so) dry brush bleached bone, dry 50 bleached/50 skull and (very) dry skull.

- the rim yellow and blanck strippes... "dangerous" or "heavy duty"

- All big metallic parts sepia ink, bolter, (not so) dry brush dark red, dry 50 dark red/50 skull, (very) dry mithril

- the wires with flashy blue, yellow, red...

Just in case anyone asks... yes, these are cast resin bases. First time ever I try it. The floor was "sculpted" with cheap plastiline (which was hell to remove from the mold!!!!)... but hey, first time also! Next, probably will use oven clay or something like that.

C&C welcome and needed, specially with the painting!

Looking good! It'd be good to know the technique you used for casting aslong as it dosent break the forum rules.

Hard to say what the paintjob will be like off just a description, get a tester up man :P

If you've got 40 termies maybe you could do with a few more variants? Sure you could make a good job of a few more as there ones are sweet.

Cheers,

@geordie

Thanks for leaving a comment. At least 1/200 is interested in the topic hehe.

You're right, probably a tester would be a good idea xD But since I have 0 time during the week...

I've been thinking about the final looks and I don't quite like the tiling of the floor... so I just might scrap de 20 or so bases I have casted if I can manage to find a couple bits I'm thinking of... dunno, its the curse of having a fertile imagination and too little time to implement

BTW, you have a PM with the casting technique: don't think its against rules (no IP involved), but JIC

Ok, here is a much better version... I believe.

PLEASE: help me out decide the final layout. Any input is more than welcome.

I have to finish them tonight, so I'm off to supper and hopefully you'll help me out in the brainstorm!

http://i677.photobucket.com/albums/vv140/T3mp4n0/IMG00025-20100521-2156.jpg?t=1274472259

As you can see this time the floor is looking much better and I got something that looks like those heavy duty steel beams (whatever they are called).

Also a 2 level base.

The beams I'd paint with "Heavy Duty" black/yellow stripes on the top and the floor.

The tubes... instead of covering them totally, its more like a "catwalk".

The security hatch... that will he hell to cut the steel in a perfect square :Elite:

Anyway: my idea is using only the new bases... IDEAS PLEASE

Thanks!

Edit: These are the pieces I have handy... plus cable.

DIY bases are always amusing. Nice work so far. :)

The bottom left metal thingie could probably be painted to look like a ventilation drum and the very bottom one to a sewer opening of some kind; and assorted cables to stick out from here and there in the grilles and cardboard would prob look good too.

Good luck!

I would use both sets of bases to get some variation, but if you only want to use one set then I would use the 2nd set of bases. Also like Seregon's idea about using the nut (I think its a nut) as a sewer entrance. Mabye you could try just putting wires on the bases so it looks like wires are built in to the factory floor or your guys are stepping over the wires. Hope this helps.

Thanks guys for the input.

The idea was using the second set... because of the floor.

What I'll is re-do some of the original with new floor.

The bottom left I already used it for a vent system :P I like how it looks.

The nut (its a nut :P) I also thought it for a sewer...

I like the wires sticking from the floor... I'll get to it now and post some pics in a while.

THANKS

Update

Do you like the vent's side? I'm 50/50...

More in a while.

They all look really good to me. They'll certainly be more striking than just the sand you had previously.

My one thought would be to make sure you include quite a few 'plain' bases - by which I mean just the floor mesh with no extras. From a realistic point of view it's unlikely every terminator would happen to be stood next to an air vent, a set of cables etc. if you know what I mean?

Really great work.

Be nice to see them with some Terminators on those bases. Make sure you have washed all of the melta pieces before you paint them... they may have some oils or the such which will make the paint wear away more quickly.

I agree with this suggestions of keeping some of the bases relatively empty. Don't want the bases to take too much attention away from the Terminators. Especially key miniatures like the Commander and Squad Leaders.

Thanks for the comments... 800+ views! I hope people liked it :P

@Turel

Good advice. Actually, the hatch-ed floor is what I had in mind for the sgt and Belial.

However, the originals got ruined when trying to make a mold (yes... a bit upset myself :P) so I redid the base, this time no tubes and wires added... I'll post pics later of how it turns out.

@Messenger

Thanks for the oil tip... but I have said, those were originals from which I make molds.

Also, for those concerned about the termies being able to fit (I've got millions of PM with people not being able to sleep, chaos following cults contacting me... xDD), here you have a pic :cuss

@ Lord Noble

Truth is it IS tight... but I kept in mind that all 3 terminator legs could actually fit.

I'm working on the new bases, hopefully will have a few primed and will try to paint (even roughly) and you can compare the results.

Ok, here is the cast version of the bases some Brothers at B&C helped me "finish": thanks to all of you who left a comment... and the 1.000+ viewers!!!

They are only primed, don't know when I'll find time to paint them... but any suggestions?

I was thinking the rim of the base with yellow/black stripes (a BIG contrast with the miniature, but low enough not to divert attention).

The floor... dark red, black wash (rust effect?) and the steel dry brush bolter and maybe light drybrush mithril.

Comparison with first version

The different version with steeled floor

Hey Tanhausen,

Great to see your progress! I like how they've come out. The colour scheme sounds good, though the hazard stripes might detract from your miniatures - depending on how good you are at painting, that might be good or bad :P

Anyway, glad to see the ideas come to fruition.

Thanks

I'm sure most readers just open the thread and think "bah, decent but not impressing"... but that's because they compare my humble work to some INCREDIBLE WIP other Brothers post :D Life isn't fair hehe

I'm not a good painter, but I'm starting with airbrush... so mask tape is my friend with hazard stripes :P

What I'll do is paint a set, just for results sake...

For all of those who have replied, if you want a copy and come by to Barcelona (Spain), no problem ;)

Ok, did a fast one last night/today, just get the looks.

http://i677.photobucket.com/albums/vv140/T3mp4n0/IMG00036-20100526-1939.jpg?t=1274895716

First an earth/blood red base, black generous wash, dry brush bolter, very dry brush mithril, black rim.

This is supposed to be done by airbrush, but hey... I wanted to see how it looked

Question is: hazard stripes?

I think it turns out a bit dark, so the stripes and the bleached bone termi should give it some life... comments?

With a termi (yes I know, its only primed :P)

Better with or without hazard?

Thanks for the comment Seregon.

I did a second black wash and I think it covered the "rust" base too much. And hopefully, with the airbrush the lines will be a bit straighter xD

Here is another "finished" base... it needs the stripes, but besides that...

Did a sepia wash... I like the rust effect in the pipe!
