Morticon
These are the Battle Reports of a very big regional tournament I played in over the weekend. It was a 6 game, 1650 point tourney with no soft scores. 10 points for a win, 5 for a draw, 1 for a loss and up to 3 for painting (3 for fully painted, 2 for half, 1 for less than half) The games were: 1: ) 4 Objectives, Dawn of War 2: ) Annihilation, Spearhead 3: ) 2 Objectives, Pitched Battle 4: ) 4 Objectives, Spearhead 5: ) 2 Objectives, Pitched Battle 6: ) Annihilation, Dawn of War My opponents were: 1: ) Daemons 2: ) * due to me losing my first game, and being unseeded in my country at the moment I went to the bottom of the log and since there were an odd number of players, I had to get a by ><; booo. Luckily it counted as a win. 3: ) Blood Angels 4: ) Imperial Guard 5: ) Daemons 6: ) Tau Batreps coming now!
Morticon
GAME 1 - Dawn of War, 4 Objectives. Opponents list: Masque. 6 Fiends - 1S upgrade 6 Fiends- 1S upgrade 6 Fiends - 1S upgrade 9 Daemonettes 8 Daemonettes 8 Daemonettes 9 Flamers - icon 3 Nurglings 3 Nurglings 3 Screamers (the flying meltabombs?) Daemon Prince Daemon Prince This was my first one on one game vs. daemons. Little did I know that Lizel (my opponent) was No.8 in the previous Nationals. My first mistake against this list was deploying the objectives like I usually do ie: close together to try grab 2 at a time. This played directly into her hands with her fast ass fiends. Id heard of another player's fiend list, and I knew that I would need to take them down first. She set up her preferred army type, which dropped 1 DP, 1 squad of daemonetters, the nurglings, 2 squads of fiends, screamers and the flamers. I moved everything on- poorly placing my flamer baal (still learning how to use him). She then struck her stuff down, with a few inconvenient strikes, but nothing horrid. I was now facing a lot of close combat death. She was quite strict as well (as expected in a tourney!) I moved one of my bikes, moved them back to position and mumbled about doing them later, moved the rest and then when I went back to move the bikes she said, no you've done those ><; so, I kinda screwed myself a bit. http://img541.imageshack.us/img541/5643/img1213.jpg (Note my HORRID placement of baals!! >< ) The first turn of shooting didnt bring enough to bare. Mephy charged up to take on the Tzeentch flamers, while the other guys all moved to shoot the closest fiends that were in front of me. She had positioned her nurglings in front to try give cover and block my advance. She spread the wounds around a bit thanks to the upgrade in the fiend squad and rolled very well for saves. Mephy charges in and starts slashing away at the tzeench who do little in return, sadly her saves again are more than quite good, and i only wound a few a turn. Next turn or or two more things comes down, but a LOT stays off. The fiends then go around the back with the DP to take on the bikes, Long story short, after a lot of very brief combats, she manages to destroy most of my army. Mephy stayed in combat for the entire game (until 5th- when he had killed all the daemonettes that were dragged into combat with him by clever multicharging RAS) The daemonettes destroyed the RAS though. http://img16.imageshack.us/img16/5169/img1216w.jpg The fiends then ripped through my vehicles even after they had moved more than 6". For those of you that arent away a squad of 6 fiends get 36 rending S5 attacks on the charge. Mental. What else...erm..yeah, I was a good sport and reminded her that her models in base to base with vehicles can still attack in CC if they did not move. That piece of advice allowed her to nuke two of my tanks.v  Sadly, there was really little i could do against this list. I could have tried to remain mobile and defensive, and perhaps should have played an entirely shoot/counter style, but I was hopelessly outclasses in combat and my shooting quickly got taken down. In the end it was 2 Objectives to her 1 contested and 1 free. (Her last squad daemonettes and DP only came on in the 4th turn) It ended in 5th with me having 3 tac marines, corbulo and Mephy on 1 wound left in my army. A solid thrashing. Mort got caned by a girl. (found out later she came 8th at the nationals, so I didnt feel too bad :P )
Morticon
Third game was vs. BA. Hes a new 40k gamer, (though an old hat fantasy gamer). He had won one, and lost one. The game - > Pitched Battle, 2 objectives His list is: Libby 10 TAC - pf, ml, mg RAIDER REDEEMER - MM 5 RAS - MG, PF 5 SG - IP, PF 6 DC - JP, IP, PW, PF 5 Van Vets - 2PW, 2PP BAAL - AC/HB VINDY This game wasn't pretty. I gave him first turn. He chose to put all the jump packers into reserve. Since he had melta on all of those guys, I chose to reserve my jumpers and baals. In hist first turn he moved his armour closer to get shots at me. Thanks to FNP and going to ground, I took no casualties. In my turn, I boosted my bikes up the right flank knowing theyd be attracting attention of some kind. Mephiston jumped forward to go have a talk with the tanks. He then charged in and attacked and stunned the Vindy. The game was sadly an uphill struggle from that point for the guy. Mephy tore through his tanks, and though his meltas blew up one tank, they only stunned another RAS. The return fire saw me whittle down the S.Guard, the RAS and the bikers who were charged by heroic intervention stoof their ground thanks to their toughness!! http://img299.imageshack.us/img299/4920/img1221n.jpg The rest of the game was this dude hurting people -> http://img269.imageshack.us/img269/3595/img1222d.jpg My Mephy (in the blue about to attack the tanks) took out 805 points alone that game. My flamer baal came on the side i wanted and fried 6 guys. This allowed the RAS to strike down near his objective with little or no recourse. Since my AC baal drew the jumping DC and the RAS away from my objective (my biker lure worked), I was able to take his army piecemeal. Game ended in 5th turn when mephy killed all the DC - his last models. I felt a bit dirty after that game- really, really nice gamer and solid chap. ><;
Morticon
Game 4 (3) - Imperial Guard. I came up against one of the top U18 players. He was using a similar list to the reigning champ, but with a few mods. From memory he had: Straken and friends with weapons. Harker and vet squad with demolitions Inq lord in termy armour with hood and mystics and warriors with plasma. 4x10man squads with lascannons 1x10man squad with flamers Marbo 2 Hydras 1 Collossus 1 Manticore 2 Chimeras 2 Sentinels with Lascannons 5 Rough Riders. We were playing spearhead and four objectives. We set up and he rolled higher than I did. Oddly enough, his experience with objectives taught him to go second, but he didnt factor in BA speed. He also forgot that above and beyond outflank, "scout" also gives a scout move. So, he sealed his fate by giving me first turn. My Baals stormed up to his lines, my bikers charged up and mephiston stormed off forward unaffected by the Inq. hood. My FSC Baal only managed to cover 4 guardsmen thanks to his spacing and my available movement, and I rolled three 1s . The AC did a little bit better - but not a whole lot. My shooting for first turn was abysmal and nothing did anything of note. It wouldnt matter though, because I was on top of him. From that point I weathered the storm of guard fire. He took out the razor back and a few squads here and there. But mephiston and the bikes were deep in his lines. I managed to tie up his sentinels for the game with the bikes (after I had taken out the danger tanks). Mephiston then went from danger squad to danger squad - starting with Straken, moving on the Inq and Chimera and then to another guard squad that mounted up in a Chimera. he almost put me in a sticky situation when his harker squad came on from a good position, nuked my TAC squad (combat squad) after I failed 4/5 saves and went to claim a back end objective. I had to send off my baal and pred to contest that. In the end however (game ended 5th) I had two and due to mephiston being overszealous and going in for the charge on a stunned chimera - wrecking it, allowing emergency disembark and putting units within contesting distance, I lost my third objective I was claiming. ><; BOOOO. Some second turn movement pics -> http://img689.imageshack.us/img689/2678/img1238d.jpg Mephy: "NOM* NOM* NOM* " http://img534.imageshack.us/img534/1204/img1237q.jpg And his 2nd turn with the rough riders coming in. http://img375.imageshack.us/img375/7266/img1236.jpg
Morticon
4th (5th) Game - Daemons The guy had: (im going to be vague since he asked me not to post his list online) Thirster Tzeench Heralds 2 squads of crushers 1 squad of fiends 2 squads of plagues 1 squad of letters 1 squad of Screamers He had won every game to date - convincingly. He had also beaten the IG player that eventually won the tournament for the second time in a row! I knew that there was NOTHING I could do against this list in a stand up fight, and that I would have to out play him. To my benefit, we were playing a pitched battle, 2 objective mission. I luckily got to go second. He placed his objective in his deployment zone about 24" or so from the right hand side table edge and about 4 inches from his board edge. I stuck mine RIGHT on the corner edge to make a last stand castle. http://img594.imageshack.us/img594/6116/img1239.jpg The game was ON right from the word go with a scary amount of daemons deploying right in front of me. I had stupidly scouted my baal to try push him back a little, but instead only managed to expose my side armour to the herald. I lose the assault cannon and got stunned before I had a chance to do anything with it. http://img707.imageshack.us/img707/8070/img1240r.jpg In my turn, I boost my bikes off to the left, hoping to draw a little away from the main fight, or at the least flank and contest later game. I chose not shoot at the BT since if I did only move 12" he would have been able to charge and destroy the squad later. My first turn was very successful and saw my combined firepower and assault take out all the Blood Letters (Meph helped too), the herald, and Crusher squad. (19 FC marines in to the Letters!!) I used Corbs' reroll to reroll a failed charge distance on the herald- I needed a 4 plus and the reroll gave me a 5! However, I would now be counter attacked by the bloody fiends ><; and the thirster. I expected him to go for mephy - and expected mephy to hold him for a turn or two, and maybe even kill him. More stuff comes down, thankfully I had killed the Icon in the crusher squad - but still he rolls well http://img7.imageshack.us/img7/7282/img1241tt.jpg I had staggered my RAS and my TAC - his fiends double charge my TAC and my stunned Baal - as expected BT goes for Meph. I had worked out on stats that Meph could probably do two wounds and he would maybe do 4 in return. I roll rage- and bamn - double 1s  That one wound would probably cost me the game. As expected -4 wounds, and Meph was gone. Poorest performance of the tourney- but ill forgive him since he won games for me alone. The fiends make short work of the TAC squad - they break and manage to get out of combat and flee. In my turn they rally. Its now time to play smart- but its only 2nd turn!!! The squad that broke, i load up into a Rhino At this point I fly my RAS away avoiding the crushers and the main assault on my objective. His objective only has a plaguebearer squad on it. I start making my way in a large arc towards that. My bikes flank around and first take shots at the herald - he fails all of his saves!! http://img46.imageshack.us/img46/6320/img1243g.jpg Corbs takes one for the team and takes a lowly 5man lascannon squad to take on 6 fiends. http://img30.imageshack.us/img30/8128/img1242ab.jpg I lose combat, but still manage to stay locked for another 2 phases!!! Corb's my hero :P manages to pull the Crushers in too - away from the RAS http://img689.imageshack.us/img689/7742/img1245k.jpg The BT goes off tank hunting. He starts moving one plague squad towards my objective. his fiends try remove some of my units from tanks. Its only in the 4th turn that i realise I have not yet brought on (rolled for) my baal. (this is after 5 games). We come to an agreement about it. My bikes then continue on to fire at the plagues and the assaulters make for the plagues and his objective. He then starts moving his crushers to support his objective. The game is getting SO tense now as I still have 2 troops in mobile transports, and one full RAS, as well as the Pred. The bikers fire and the assaulters fire take the Plagues down to 1 man - he saves/FNPs very very well with that last guy. My bikes need to charge. The crushers then counter, and clean up- leaving the 1 claiming plague. In my last turn I manage to kill the last plague with shooting: http://img192.imageshack.us/img192/4599/img1247n.jpg After almost everything else was killed, including him wrecking my rhino, my 6 remaining tacs disembark and charge for his plagues near to claiming my objective. I charge them. http://img13.imageshack.us/img13/1807/img1246k.jpg Pulling him further off the objective. Combat ends. I roll for last turn. its a 1 !! DRAW!! never been so happy for a draw before. One more turn And he would have tabled me. Final game was vs. a classic tau list. Leader -bling 2x3 Fireknives 1x2 Flamer/Melta suits 2x6 firewarriors 1x6 pathfinders? 2x2 Broadsides with shields 1 Rail-head 3 Devil Fish Everything had bling. That 4+ save wargear is dumb. I refused to take pics of the last game since the kid I was playing (also a youngster - maybe 16/17) was proxying half his army  first time ive seen that in a tourney - total bull, but whatever. It was a DOW/ KP game. Mephiston jumped forward, and got into his lines and started chomping through guys after I weathered the storm of fire. My DoA striking jumpers also landed well and were able to get into the lines easily.. They eventually died to fire, but did take out two crucial units. Mephy killed 2 broadsides, 6 fireknives and a Devil Fish by his own. (after losing two wounds to dangerous terrain and perils <_ < ) He also made about 7 of 10 cover saves and every time i did manage to get through I rolled a 1 or a 2. Horrid luck there. Anyway- the player wasnt bad, neither was his army, but I dont think he expected me to be as shooty - or at least play as shooty as i did - my baals came in reserve too - very helpful. And the only two units I had in his lines were Mephy and the RAS (and the bikes for a short turn) I guess! Game ended 7 KP to 4 KP to me!
Morticon
The tournament finally ended with me sitting on: 4 wins 1 loss 1 draw and 49 points total. The winner was an incredibly hard guard list - stupid hard at 1650 actually. He had a one point differential from the second place winner for having more models painted than the Space Pup list that came second. Other than that their record was identical (5 wins, 1 loss) I came in with the same tournament points (49) as the Khorne daemon player I had faced. Unfortunately, through some random sub scoring method that may have been related to KP or objectives claimed I was beaten out of a tied 3rd place (and some prize vouchers  ) 10points to 11points. So, the daemon took 3rd, I took fourth. I have no idea how this was factored in considering the by, but I wasnt about to get whiney. In my mind i had the same tourney points as the 3rd place guy  so I was happy. I had also beaten the SW player and his list 2 weeks prior to the tourney. Weird how that goes. Overall a great tourney, lots of exciting gaming and I managed to improve on my performance from the year before. Hope you enjoyed the read. Questions/thoughts welcome. Terrahawk
Thanks for posting these, they were an interesting read. With cool pictures to boot! I think many people don't expect the level of shootiness your BA had so that's one thing we can always work in our favour. Even though in-your-face-assault is where we excel, we definitely are no slouches in the shooting department either.

the jeske
bit unconcentrated in the first game mort ... I wonder why ^_^ anyway gratz to the nice raptor and nice playing . I know the curse of 4th and 9th placing more then anyone probably , so I know your pain. As the list goes I like yours very much . not a rush or death start like most people play . have you tested playing with 2 flamestorm or 2 AC baals ? BAdragon
Solid performance, seems mephy did most of the work for you in the battles you had! That guy is so worth his points. The mistake on the bike movement in your first battle reminds me so much of my own performance sometimes hehe. With these batreps you can really see where to improve and what went well. Hopefully top 3 again next time boss.

Nougat
Nice work! Closely contested games. Looks like a lot of unpainted/partially painted armies, which I think would bug me... But although it's hard to tell from the screenshots, the second Daemon army you played against looks pretty nice. Are those Daemonettes on spiders? There were more unpainted armies than I've ever seen at a local tourney. I was a bit disappointed that some didnt even have a base coat :P But, the organizers wanted more people to participate, and the community is not huge. The second daemon army wasnt bad at all, and they Daemonettes WERE spiders...spider bodies, with Daemon heads/chests. Very creepy/cool.
