Prot
So I posted some of these in Hall of Honor and didn't get much feedback so I thought I'd hit you guys up.... I am experimenting with a true 'table top' quality Space Wolves army. My first tests have gone by the wayside. Now I am trying a one shade base of PURE Space Wolves grey. No mixing. I'm going for that... frosty look. This is meant to be basic, or else I'll never finish my 53 model count army. Those pictures are just a very slight touch brighter than real life due to the lighting I tried to get as good a pic as I could.... So is this going to work? I thought I'd give this an 'average' amount of time to paint one squad, and see how it looks before continuing on. At this point I have base painted about 30 models, so I'd hate to go back and have to redo them to a darker blend. lol Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/201982-prots-tabletop-wolves-experiment-42000/ Share on other sites
Fanon03
These guys are looking good. I like painting mine with the pure SW Grey as well. It just gives them more of a from snow and ice world feel to me. Keep up the good work. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/201982-prots-tabletop-wolves-experiment-42000/#findComment-2406232 Share on other sites
krewl
If you're looking for fast painting in base cvolours why not try some whashes as they add diversity quite fast on just one base colour. Appart from that tabletop is fine, and your army looks fine. You'll never win a golden deamon award with it, but hey surprise, neither will Ior most others on this entire forum. If you paint to play (What I do) it's a bit of a choire, so get it over with and field your hordes of guys .. Do what you enjoy in the hobby! I thought if I go one colour base, I want it to match a frosty/icy kind of theme..... I felt this did ok. Thanks for the comment. If you're looking for fast painting in base cvolours why not try some whashes as they add diversity quite fast on just one base colour. Do what you enjoy in the hobby! Well I used to spend ungodly times on my armies, but after building and selling so many of them, I am sort of... burned out. I never played Wolves in the previous versions of the game, and I actually love their look/background. The problem is I used to actually win or place very high in painting at tournaments. This is as simple as I want to get. I don't want to 'fool' myself into believing this is an overly simple method as I suspect it will still take me a good 6 months + to get all my 53 models painted in my current list. I just want it to be good enough that..... well, I'm not looking back after 3 months and thinking, man I should have spent a few more hours per guy. As far as simplicity, this is as simple as I want to get. It has a base of Space Wolves Grey, a light blue wash in the crevices, and a Grey/Brown thin paint line for definition between armour plates/jointes/etc. So it's already very vanilla. I'm hoping in larger numbers I'll be happy with it. Nightrunner
Hey Prot, I've always been painting my SW's basic SW Grey and to be honest, it gives you a unique look that not many other PA armies have as everyone tends to go the shadow-grey route. My painting truly sucks, but I've got to a solid "I can put it on the table and not be ashamed level", lol. My only advice would be to use strong contrast colours to go against the paleness of the armour, as otherwise it can be very easy to come off too pale. Maybe its just me, and my style of painting my own wolves for so long, but I think maybe more on the knee/shoulder pads/backpacks to break up the grey would greatly improve your overall look. Hope that helped. NR :woot: Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/201982-prots-tabletop-wolves-experiment-42000/#findComment-2406440 Share on other sites
littlbitz
Nice job Prot! A good solid "table top" quality army you got started there. It should look great on the table top when finished! Mordekiem
Looking good. I really like it. It seems to me that too many SW armies end up being way too blue. Not sure exactly why. Maybe they are converted UM. <_< I know you have normally very high standards fory our painting, but sometimes taking it easy is OK, too! Just becuase you can paint the Mona Lisa does not mean everypainting has to be the Mona Lisa. Even if you are painting everything to be perfect or not, the part that counts is that you are having fun doing it. The assembly and painting is more of a necessary evil and I enjoy it a bit, but mostly my goal is to get a table ready army and ply, not spend decades painting Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/201982-prots-tabletop-wolves-experiment-42000/#findComment-2407988 Share on other sites
Prot
Thanks guys, I really appreciate the acknowledgment of what I'm trying to do here. Mord, I know you're familiar with a lot of my stuff, including my eldar, so I appreciate the honesty. I guess I'll try to surge forward. ;) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/201982-prots-tabletop-wolves-experiment-42000/#findComment-2408230 Share on other sites
Emperor's Scourge
I can definitely respect wanting to get an army out fast and these, as they are, still look great, but I really think a nice wash would raise the bar without too much effort. I paint my wolves grey, but the issue of White Dwarf that released with our codex describes a nice and easy wash mix for the lighter shade of wolves. Vomit Brown and something else...can't quite remember. Prot
Actually I used that wash. It is just very neatly applied around rivets, and armour crevices. It's a very bright picture, and probably washes out some of those details. It's a very easy method combining Space Wolves Grey and the Brown with a hint of water. +edit+ Actually holding a few of the models in my hand and comparing them to the pictures, I can see why you'd say that. The washing (there are two washes, a blue, and a blue/brown) that are considerably more noticeable in real life. I guess I put so much light on the model so the flash wouldn't go off that I kind of 'blanched' the model of some depth. I'll try to get better pics as I finish more models, but at the same time I'll definitely look at the depth of what I'm painting. Thanks for the comment.
