History Part One: Discovery

I

n the mid 41st century the rogue trader Nius Palim operating from the Lamina sector set out to explore the far eastern fringe in his hereditary ship the Spirit of Retribution. Nius voyage was unremarkable and largely unprofitable until the ship was engulfed by a warp storm and remerged in a dead system that seemed to contain several pre heresy derelicts, the last transmission from his Astropath to his trading house was that he had discovered a vast store of Archeotech.

The House Palim waited 4 years before deciding that Nius was missing or renegade, the house patriarch despatched a small fleet led by Ufradis Palim to search for the missing ship and her captain. Unknown to the House Palim the Inquisition in the Lamina sector had taken an interest in Nisu’s message and placed several Acolytes on board the fleet.

11 months of searching later the fleet began to detect signs of past human civilisation and eventually stumbled upon a inhabited world. Not long after arriving in orbit there fleet was met by a small flotilla of ancient but well maintained ships, the inhabitants of the system called their world Cala and offered hospitality to the Palim fleet.

It turned out that Cala was part of a lager cluster of worlds abandoned by the Imperium in the later day of the Heresy but that had maintained a largely imperial way of life due to the presence of a small force of space marines supported by the armies of the Dimos crusade and had formed into what was known as called the Limeades collation. Ufradis was amazed at the discovery and began proceeding to secure trade routes and oversee the coalitions reintegration into the Imperium, the acolytes were more suspicious and contacted the Inquisitorial cabal in the Lamina sector.

In response to the massage Lord inquisitor Awane Korhal set out with a Ecclesiarchy fleet and arrived 4 months later, a standoff ensued as Ufradis argued his right to bring the planet into the Imperium, however the wishes of lord Korhal won out in the end and preparations for full scale conversion of the population began.

Up until the Ecclesiarchy descended the governing council of Cala had complied with every request made by the Imperial forces, however soon the ground and space forces of Cala moved against the Imperial forces and demanded their withdrawal. Outraged Lord Korhal ordered the forces to bomb the planet into summation and sent word for reinforcements.

Cala proved more formidable than anticipated and the conflicted dragged until Lord Korhal’s fleet detected a lager group of unknown ships closing on them. Korhal met with Ufradis and concluded that they could not hold the system without out the expected reinforcements and ordered Exterminatus, the fleet began to execute the order but were soon engaged by the unknown incoming enemy fleet.

The enemy closed to almost point blank range and began firing boarding torpedoes, to the horror of the fleet the torpedoes contained space marines of an unrecognised chapter. The battle was horrific and loss of life immense almost all the fleet was destroyed, the remaining vessels were saved only when the flagship with lord Korhal was destroyed and Ufradis Palim took direct command and ordered a general retreat.

The remaining vessels limped back to the Lamina sector to report. The assembled lords of the sector communicated what they knew to Holy Terra and prepared for a crusade, as to the marine chapter encountered the Inquisitors were at a loss, it was clear that Lord Korhal had know something but what that knowledge was seemed to have died with him.
