Space Wolf Tanks

Greetings fellow Ironwolves,

Up to this day, my space wolf tanks have been little more than grey standard space marines vehicles. I recently ordered the brass etched symbols from Forge World, but they do not significantly improve the ''wolfiness'' of my tanks, IMO. I though I might add some 'viking-like shields to increase the desired effect, or some furs, but then I do not know which bits to use. I think beastmen Ungors sheilds are perfect for the job, but I still do not know how to position them on my tanks, and for the fur I am completely lost.

What are you guys doing for your space wolf tanks?

Any specific ideas? Any particular bits used?

Pictures are welcome!

Many ''tanks''!

If you are looking for wolfy bits, I highly recommend the Orcs & Goblins Wolf Riders box. It comes with a bunch of wooden shields that easily mirror viking shields. It also comes with some spears and banner poles that fit our theme. And of course the best benefit is that you get 10 wolves to use as Fenrisian Wolves.

And around we go again

Well I found a Bit seller on ebay that does kegs and Im gonna put one in a land raider eventually. Granted I am also going to Green skin a gigantic wolf head with the assault cannon coming out of the mouth. Maybe even Wolf Claws over the edge of the treads.

I did just one Space Wolf tank this far.

Bitz-wise, all this Rhino got were two wolftails and a wolf's skull on the armoured front hatch.

In my experience you can achieve a pretty wolfy look all by giving an appropriate paintjob, in this case the great company freehand, it's name on a parchment in Futhark runes as well as the pack markings on the side.

The inside also got some migration period wall paintings.

However, on my next vehicle I'm gonna use a lot of riveting, making it look more barbaric. You could also use some stuff from the chaos vehicle accessories sprue, namely the chains.

Max just demonstrated how wolfy chains can look.

Yea honestly there's so much you can do (or choose not to do) with Space Wolves that anything goes really (besides, how do you really define "wolfy"?) I play a much more minimalistic "traditional" Space Wolf army, with the more barbaric aesthetic touched at only sparingly (although my characters tend to be pretty all out brutal). Plus (to me) it doesn't make sense to put too much on the outside of a front line vehicle (and my vehicles are absolutely front-liners) that will be taking constant fire. They'd have to always be replacing shields, fur pelts, talismans, you name it!

DV8 I have to ask, what does that watermark I always see in your pics actually mean? Im horribly untrained in kata or kana.

Hey. It's my chinese name, in traditional characters but super simplified. I know there's a name for it but it escapes me at the moment. I had one of those marble stamp things made the last time I was in Hong Kong.

@Shieldwall: Can you post a tut about just how you accomplished the nice freehand?

Sure. I didn't have much of a system though.

Started off with the rhombus in the back by painting on a cross, then connecting the four ends and filling out the surface.

For the wolfhead, I started in the middle (at the ear) and then just doodled the rough outlines on, defining and filling them out later.

It's an artistic process really, that needs sense of proportion which comes by practice, so it's hard to put into words.

Last step was correcting with yellow at a few places, namely the teeth and the gap between head and neck, as well as painting on the eye and the whiskers. The rhombus received some highlighting on the edges, the wolfhead was left flat black.

As said, I can't really give you a straight step by step, as I approach freehands just as I feel like at a particular moment mostly.

I think there's a pretty nice tutorial thread on here somewhere on how to achieve them in a more systematical way.
