Why Spacewolves?

Hello Brothers,

What are the top few reasons you can give me to turn my vanilla space marine army into spacewolves. Besides the awesome fluff. I ask this because I am debating between Black Templars or Space Wolves. As I am already slightly invested as a spacewolf because of the assault orientation what would other main reasons be?

The background, check out the quote at the bottom of my signature, about doing things because it's right. There's also the camaraderie in the Fang, we're quite a tight bunch of people and often have a similar mindset, we can have a laugh at ourselves as the Wolves do, they enjoy the life of fighting for the Allfather. According to Abnett our Legion was only tolerated in order to destroy a Legion should the need arise.

The models can look pretty insane if done right.

Beyond the rich and highly textured fluff, the philosophical narrative, and the affinity toward mid-close range combat, I would say what draws me to the Fang is the camaraderie and the individualized nature each player's army. Each player here is a Wolf Lord unto himself.

And the wolf scouts. Never forget the wolf scouts.

We do have a saying about having to ask around here.

But to be succint- Space Wolves are visceral, with a flexable play style that fits firmly on the shoulders of its troops and, much like a wolf pack, works best when its units are in tandem together. More than enough shooting to clear the way for excellant close combat troops means that SWs are a strong army, and will remain so for years to come. In fact, our last book lasted three editions and 10 years of gaming before getting an update and still did well in competitive and fun-to-play enviroments.

If you like what youve read in those books, youll like playing space wolves.

Come on over, have some mead.

The spacewolfs are good but it feels like we are a dime a dossen on the tournament scene. Or perhaps it just is the power armour.

How many have blakc tenplars? Not many.

one of my main opponents is a templar actually.

i would say go Wolf, as he has a constant complaint of the Templars not having many playstyles.

Spacewolves are much more flexible in their playstyles than black templars. They have two or three competitive list styles, we've got..... I dont know, Im only a simple barbarian and can't count that high ;) . Additionally, there is the attitude. Black Templars, being the epitome of catholic space nazis, tend toward the extremely grimdark side of things. Space wolves, with our ale and insane antics, tend to be a little more light hearted. Take your pick, but whatever you do, always listen to Grey Mage. That cannot be said enough times.

Space Wolves are the kind that can be pinned down under a hail of enemy fire, turn to one another and smile (fangs exposed of course) say something to the effect of "This is when things get really fun," charge the enemy and manage to kill him in close combat.

They are also smart enough and resourceful enough to know when a charge would be too foolish even for them and use vindicators, whirlwinds, landraider crusaders, and last but not least Long Fangs to more than even the odds.

In short just when you think you know ALL of our tactics, play another player and prepare to be amazed.

Assault orientation? pfff! .... I 'spose you could call it that, even you were being lose with your words :P

If you have to ask, go Templars.

See the lovely response the Wolf gives you? Very warm and welcoming....

*looks down up-turned nose* yes, SW are pretty common, aren't they?

If you like the fluff, then build an army! :)

Check my sig.

And, as always, listen to Grey Mage

If you consider a Warp-consultant a sound choice of wisdom.... :eek

SW are a sound choice, and if not a Templar, I'd be a Wolf. They make a good second-best choice ^_^

I swear i am going to install some locks on the doors around here, these templar trolls are getting to be a bit much!!

dont they have their own subforum to bother!?!

Well...I pretty much just went off on Why Space Wolves are the Way they are in the "fluff question - how many of us are there" Thread so I am not going to repeat it all now. I have to say that the question of "Do you want to belong to a Order...or to a Brotherhood" is the best and clearest advice to give. Not everyone has the mindset, but if you do it will be clear to you in no time flat where you belong lol. Some come to the Wolves because of the actual mechanics of the Army List and they are welcomed the same as any other. Some came because for a bit we were the "new thing" and even they were welcomed, though with the occassional snide comment and practical joke meant in good fun. Some came to the Wolves because somewhere in their hearts the things it talks about in the stories hit a chord. And they were welcomed the same as any other.

But those that stay, that love the Space Wolves for their history, their personality and the idea they represent...Well..Those are the ones that become Space Wolves and never look back. Those are the ones that I run into the most commonly here on the forums. To my mind, those are the ones that make the Space Wolves a Brotherhood rather then just a chapter. Ones like Grey Mage who is allways willing to give advice to the young pups like me. Warhorse and his stories,as good as any of the sagas in the codex's and able to evoke the same depth of emotion. Kieran...Who is just all around awesome...And a hundred others I could name should I wish to force my cold-medicated brain to work properly.

well...should'mt babble too much or they take my mead away.

I started playing Space Wolves in second edition and haven't found any reason to change (except those excellent Dark Angel models, of which I have a half company, but oh their codex). They're fluffy (with all those pelts) tough (although all marines are) and excel in the short range firefights I prefer.

On the side I have to say our previous codex lasted so well because it referenced the Space Marine codex for much of the equipment and armour that we could take so as the Marines were updated we got the benefits, often with lower points costs.

Basically now its all about... waiting for my SW Codex to get here from Wayland. Im glad a got such a variety of good responses makes it really feel like the fang. I wish a new book would come out already, post-heresy.

Well till it does, you can allways go searching for Warhorses Tales of the Fang...And according to other people my stories arent half bad either. Hopefully they will tide you through and help you get a good idea of what being a wolf means to some of us.
