Thinned paint running into recesses

Recommended Posts

I'm trying to improve my painting by changing my technique so I'm working up from a dark base to the final highlight, rather than my traditional light base and work down to the deepest shade.

Problem I'm having is that when I put the next layer on, it tends to run down into the recesses which I'm trying to keep dark. Paint's about a 1:1 mix with water, is this too runny for what I'm trying to do? It's a lot thicker than my usual milk-consistency layers, but when I try it thicker I just end up with blobby highlights that look crap.

It's all about controlling the amount of paint on your brush -- you have too much on it.

Keep a paper towel/napkin on hand. Once you load the brush, touch it to the paper towel/napkin to remove the excess.

Also, it is MUCH, much easier to work up from a light/white primer base for this kind of technique.

Thanks guys. Between that and some hands-on guidance from the LGS I think I'm getting there. Did a white Sanguinary Priest over the weekend, looks a lot better than I was expecting.

As soon as i can find the cable for my camera i'll get some pics up

Back still needs some work, but I'm pretty happy with the rest of it. Store lighting's washed it out a bit, but the white's come up nice, it's a bit less chalky and got a bit more depth irl.

Ignore the base
