Testing a gold recipe. C & C wanted please

Recommended Posts

I'm still plodding along with my World Eaters, but for a change of pace and since I already had the colors out, I did up a test mini for a future project or 2.

Everyone in my town has Blood Angels fever and I must admit. I do plan on buying and trying an all Sanguinary Guard list, and in the near future some Adeptus Custodes. That being said I needed to come up with a quick Gold scheme that I liked.

Below are pics of the test mini I did. Ignore the rubbish pattern on the power sword and other misgivings. I'm really looking for C & C on what you guys think of the gold.

Backside.. Trying a burned/scorched effect on the jump pack.

The effect on the sword is crap.. I know.

I'm going to have to do something with my light settings.. It's washing out my reds and making them look pink. It's much darker in real life.

Probably the best pic of the lot. IMHO

It's a bit rough and the highlights could use some work. I'm curious to see what feedback I get on the gold recipe.. If anyone is interested I'll gladly share it with you.

Thx,

FFX.

I like the more solid gold. How did you do it?

It's really so simple. Wal-Mart loves the hobbyist, their paint department in particular.

If I may let me introduce my assistants.

The can on the left is Flat Black [ I use this for my primer. It's only 96 cents a can btw and it does NOT eat plastics]

The can on the right is Krylon's Brilliant Gold [ spray right on top of flat black.. it's $2.97 a can ]

FFX's down & dirty gold recipe.

1. Prime with flat black spray paint.

2. Give a good even coat of Krylon Brilliant Gold [ dries in 15 minutes ].

3. Highlight the edges with Mithril Silver.

4. Wash the whole model with copious amounts of Griphon Sepia & let dry.

5. Wash the whole model with Delvan Mud & let dry.

6. Seal with GW Matte Finish.

That's it.

wow that is incredibly simple, do you think it would look good enough for an emperor model?

I guess it could...It just depends on if it's what ya want to go with.

I'm thinking I should be able to crank out the Sang Guard in like a week tops.. [ Once I finish my World Eaters}

Nice easy and cheap great job on the gold. I have thought of doing a Rogal Dorn model in his gold armour but my recipe requires more paint for gold- paint area black when dry paint black area chainmail silver then when this is dry use clear yellow (Tamiya) and it comes out a real shiny gold.

Congratulations!

It's a more than decent tabletop (as you said, details and highlights are pending).

It certainly is a relief when you find a system that gives you speed, so you can concentrate in details :tu:

BTW, make sure the flat black is prime and not paint... big issue there :)

It is a flat black spray paint. I've used this type of paint for 5 years on all my models and I've never had any problems with it. It doesn't flake, it doesn't run, it doesn't pool and clog details.. it's brilliant.
