A project of progress - Flesh Tearers WiP 24/5/10

Hello peeps. First post here and I've got almost-completed works to show :whistling:

This comes pretty close to being complete. Only the gun strap and parchment left to do. I'm putting him on hold until I regain my nerve because I really screwed up the parchment lettering on the pauldron and I need a while to regain my confidence ;)

In case you can't see it, the lettering on his shin reads 'Cruor', which is latin for 'murder'. This is because this sergeant leads a team of Flesh Tearers designated as a Murder Squad.

Here I tried a bit of zenithal highlighting/blending on the heraldry. I painted it a different red from the armor to stand out. Hope it looks blended.

An earlier shot of the heraldry on the right pauldron. I had no decals so I had to freehand the saw blade symbol and blood drop. Did it work out?

And just to prove that I did not slack on painting the eyes!!

While I regain my confidence to do more freehand lettering on the parchment...I shall be practicing my blending~!

A whole squad is doubtful - I'm using these sternguard to test out different Space Marine colours =p I do have Gabriel Seth waiting in the wings though...

Red Recipe:

1. Basecoat of Scab Red and Scorched Brown (2:1 mix) over a black undercoat leaving black in the recesses.

2. Shade (not wash!) with diluted Asurmen Blue. Let it into the recessed areas and then 'drag' it out.

3. Drybrush Scab Red + Red Gore (1:1 mix) at the areas of the armor where light would naturally fall. You can see theseby holding the model under a lamp. This drybrush should be kept light so it isn't so stark.

4. Highlight using Red Gore and Bleached Bone (4:1 mix). Add successive highlights with less and less Red Gore added (i.e. 3:1 Red Gore to Bleached Bone, 2:1) until you feel the highlight is stark enough.

And there's your red :tu: It's actually pretty quick.
