New Chapter Questions

Hello all!

 

Here's basically a few questions I've been wondering about the creation of a new Space Marine chapter. Please understand, this is about the fluff, not about writing it. So, here's my questions:

 

1. How is the Chapter Master selected?

- In most of the homebrew fluff I've read, the Chapter Master is selected from the ranks of Captain of the founding chapter. Is this how it would happen, or would, like and Inquisitor control the chapter until it's marines are ready?

 

2. How do chapter's get a fleet?

- Do they inherit it or do they have to get it specially made or something?

 

3. In the fleet, what's in it?

- Assuming they have a homeworld and are not a fleet based chapter, what do they have in their fleet?

 

4. Where and how are the records kept?

- Do the chapter keep their records or do they send reports to the Mechanicus and the Mechanicus files it? I know that some chapter's keep a tome. Also, are these records available to anyone in the chapter, or is it limited to scholars?

 

5. How do they pick their name?

- I know some pay tribute heroes (Sons of Orar etc.), but what about chapters like the Black Consuls? The Angels of Fire? Do they use their homeworld names or something?

 

Also, just a general question I thought I'd ask while you're here, is there any difference whatsoever between a single-thruster jump pack and a normal one? Plus, would the wings be more of a hinderance on the Blood Angels?

1 sometimes the 1st chapter master is from the training cadre supplied by the parent chapter or the training cadre will select one of the new recruits of the newly founded chapter to be appointed chapter master

 

2 the ad mech supply the new chapter with a certain amount of resources some of it is also gifted to the new chapter by thier parent chapter

 

3 each chapter is different but have a look on the gw at the battlefleet gothic rules/pdf it has a saction on astartes fleets and ship types

 

4 the chapter keeps records as does the admistorum of terra also maybe the admech as well im sure and the inquisition would be keeping an eye on everything as well

 

5 chapter can get thier name from a variety of sources generally it is picked by the first chapter master or may have beeen given to them by the high lords/ parent chapter at thier founding

That is a very good question - TBH I think that the rash of captains from the "parent" chapter is a little bit fake as their first allegiance would be to their old chapter. The training of promising new recruits to officer level by experienced marines is perfectly acceptable, I just think that those marines might be required by their extant chapter at some point...

 

2. How do chapter's get a fleet?

- Do they inherit it or do they have to get it specially made or something?

Generally I think that marine chapters being founded get shiny new (old?) equipment from the armouries of Mars..including star ships. They may of course augment their fleet using the rights of salvage (depending on your PoV, piracy!)

 

3. In the fleet, what's in it?

- Assuming they have a homeworld and are not a fleet based chapter, what do they have in their fleet?

Max 3 battlebarges, maybe 5-6 Strike Cruisers and adequate escorts to provide screen for the bigger ships. That's a scary force but one that an Imperial Navy battlefleet should have little trouble dealing with in a slugging match...

 

4. Where and how are the records kept?

- Do the chapter keep their records or do they send reports to the Mechanicus and the Mechanicus files it? I know that some chapter's keep a tome. Also, are these records available to anyone in the chapter, or is it limited to scholars?

The records of a chapter's deeds are stored in the Librarium - hence the Lexinacium, Codicier etc Librarian ranks..really only Chief Librarians are the monsters and gods of the battlefield that we see in 40K battles...

I am sure that the Admin and the AdMech keep their own records but I doubt they are particulalry complete or notable - only records of where centralised authorities have ordered the chapter into battle and other formal discourse iwth the various Imperial bodies etc etc

 

5. How do they pick their name?

- I know some pay tribute heroes (Sons of Orar etc.), but what about chapters like the Black Consuls? The Angels of Fire? Do they use their homeworld names or something?

Probably the High Lords have a chapter name generator with scary creatures, significant worlds and systems or noble words and concepts and they pick a random combination of those. I'm sure there is a Turn Signals episode about this..if there isn't there ought to be!

The Black consuls - black probably to signify their faith in the Emperor and the Consul bit probably reflects the pseudo-Greco_roman heritage (Consul was the highest elected rank in the Republic and highest appointed one in the Empire.

 

Also, just a general question I thought I'd ask while you're here, is there any difference whatsoever between a single-thruster jump pack and a normal one? Plus, would the wings be more of a hinderance on the Blood Angels?

The single thruster pack may only have a smaller fuel load or may be an artisanal pack which must be used with perhaps anti-gravimetric wings -hence the wings :-) Or it could be a more advanced (older?) version of the pack though TBH a dual thruster pack would probably be more stable than a single thruster pack...

1. Training Cadre, as selected by the High Lords (with Mechanicus assistance), build the fledgling chapter up. When they hit a critical point of self-sustainability they pick people with the most aptitude to follow them. A member of the Training Cadre apointing themselves to Chapter Master could be seen as one chapter ruleing over another to increase its own power, not good. More traditionalist chapters start putting preasure on them to pick someone else.

 

2. May inherit some equipment from parent Chapter whith the Training Cadre, maybe even a small ship. Traditionaly Battle Barge and support craft are freshley stamped out on Mars.

 

3. Lots of ships for getting Marines, equipment and specialists down to a planet surface. lots of capacity to enact and repel boarding actions. by the standards of the Imperial Navy sub-standard ship-to-ship weapons or bombardment weapons. At least to start with. you can put good money on them 'obtaining' upgrades and additional ships of variouse types. Remember, its not pirecy if you do it for the gouvernment, then your just a pre-emptive nautical salvage expert.

 

4. In the minds of the Librarians and Archivists. In old books. In the machine-spirit of the ship. on Data-slates. In servo-skulls. Written on the walls. Tattoo'd into the skin of the Marines and the flayed skin of the foe. A copy may be sent ot Mars, a copy to Terra and even maybe to other local Chapters and millitery organisations as shows of goodwill and boasting. But these may well be edited to an extent. Only the Writers will have the complete records.

 

5. They are all given a Chapter Number when they set out (the Excorcists were the 666th chapter for instance). After theat they can call them selves what they want within reason. They may retain their old Number indefinetly, if they so wish. They may take a name from history, an ideology, a religiouse figurehead, a natural disaster, a graet hero or a favoured tactic.

It's worth noting that the idea of a founding cadre was something that originated on these boards. It's fan fiction, based on what people thought would be the most credible way it would be done. So really, we can't give you a definite answer because GW hasn't given sufficient info on how a Chapter is founded.

In addition to what's already been said, an Inquisitor is one of the least likely choices to be given the responsibility. The other Inquisitors would fall over themselves trying to keep that kind of power away from any of their number. Access to the sum total of all the Imperium's knowledge of Chaos and Daemonology and a pet Space Marine Chapter? That's just asking for trouble, and it's not worth the risk.
