Glory for the Wolves of Fenris!

All I can say is, wow. My friend and I went in expecting to have a good time and maybe pull up in the middle, and what do you know, we end up taking top place. A lot of great fun, and an amazing mix of armies to fight against. The tournament was 3 rounds, using 2008 GT Scenarios and scoring. 6 teams, 2 players per team, 1500 pts per player. Each army was treated as a separate entity so you weren't allowed to feed off your partner's abilities, and vice versa (stuff like Searchlights, or Venomthorpes, Kustom Force Fields, etc.) The army lists that Andrew (Tau) and I (Wolves of Fenris) fielded:

Wolves of Fenris

Rune Priest, Living Lightning, Jaws of the World Wolf, Bolter, Chooser of the Slain, Wolf Tail Talisman

Rune Priest, Living Lightning, Tempest's Wrath, Bolt Pistol, Chooser of the Slain, Wolf Tail Talisman

Hammerhead, Railgun, Smart Missile System, Multi-Tracker, Target Lock, Disruption Pod

Hammerhead, Railgun, Smart Missile System, Multi-Tracker, Target Lock, Disruption Pod

Both of our lists are all-comers, and not specifically tooled for any opponent. But it synergizes well because Andrew provides some serious long range firepower to support my Wolves. So our strategy was simple: Andrew turtles and pewpews, while I run and gun, soaking up hits, claiming objectives, and being a general nuisance. Alas, I didn't take any pictures, but I'll give a rundown and summary of each game. The lists of our opponents are based primarily on what I "experienced", and are just general lists. Some things may or may not be 100% accurate as some items they had may not have been used, or I simply didn't know exactly what they were throwing at us.

Game 1 - Annihilation, Dawn of War

Synopsis

Andrew and I won the roll for first turn, and elected to let our opponents go first, without Seizing the Initiative. We hold our entire army off table save for a Fire Warrior squad (that gets expectedly chewed by the Furioso, which we then promptly immobilize and take potshots at the rest of the game (and it survives till turn 5 doing not a whole lot...probably raging on the spot). The opening game starts off pretty well for our opponents, with our firepower doing....not a whole lot. We manage to down half their Raiders, but I lose both my Typhoons and a Tornado in the process, which doesn't look like a pretty start. Plus the Blood Angels glory boys are zerging up the center and are moments from hitting our lines, despite losing both their Rhinos. Top of turn 3 sees Kill Points relatively balanced, but the enemy has a solid position to ram their pointy fists and sharp chainswords down our gullet.

Andrew is optimistic, I just want to cause carnage, and our turn 3 sees absolute hilarity ensue. Up until this point, our rolling has been pretty abysmal and we've inflicted meh casualties across the board (taking out 2 Raiders, a Ravager, a Predator turret, 2 Rhinos, 4 or 5 Assault Marines, and the Dark Eldar Lord). This turn however, we manage to destroy every single enemy vehicle, and in the resulting explosions manage to take out 8 Wyches, and bring every single Warrior squad to below half strength. Combined with some decent shooting and assault, we manage to wipe out the remainder of the Dark Eldar army in a single turn, and take out all of the Blood Angels fire support. Not only that, but Seth falls to a power fist and with wound allocation (from tons of rapid firing bolters, the Librarian bites the dust!)

Turn 4 and 5 sees us mopping up the remainder of the Blood Angels infantry (damn Corbulo and the Sanguinary Priest...those marines are just damned unkillable with Feel No Pain(t)...at this point the marines are primed black).

Actually at this point I should also mention too that I am fielding the only fully painted and cohesive force, garnering no small amount of oohs and aahs from everyone. Oh yea...totally worth the 2 years of my life...

MVP

Wolf Scouts with Pack Leader. No doubt, accounting for no less than 2 and a half Warrior Squads, a Ravager, and a Predator, AND surviving the game with only 2 casualties.

LVP (Least Valuable Player)

Jaws Rune Priest. Could he be a bigger tool. We managed to destroy both Rhinos early in and I had an early shot with Jaws lined up against his Sanguinary Priest, Corbulo, and Seth. I manage to Perils on a double 6. The subsequent turn sees the Priest, Corbulo, Seth, the Librarian, and a Power Fist lined up yet again. He Perils on a double 6 and voluntarily gives himself epilepsy. 'Grats.

Game 2 - Seize and Control, Pitched Battle

Primary Objective: One objective per deployment zone

Secondary Objective: Kill or break the most expensive enemy unit

With this, and Game 3's secondary objectives, the most expensive enemy unit and most expensive enemy commander were counted for each enemy player of the team, and if either player lost said unit or commander, the secondary objective was completed.

Opponents: Orks and Tyranids

Orks

Warboss, Power Klaw

Big Mek, Kustom Force Field

30 'Ard Boyz, Nob with Power Klaw

Snikrot, 11 Kommandos

20 Boyz, Nob with Power Klaw, Shootas, Big Shoota

Tyrannofex, Rupture Cannon

Tyrannofex, Rupture Cannon

Synopsis

Our opponents won the roll off for first turn, and elected to take it. They made the tactical error of placing a Loota squad per flank, and we were able to use the big honkin' building in the center of the table to essentially shut down one squad for the entire game. Combined with my Drop Pod assault taking out his second Loota squad (the Tyranid player made the mistake of moving up, giving me room to land right in front of the Lootas, blocking LoS with the Pod, and taking out 8 in the first volley with Grey Hunters

What really wins the game for us is my Jaws of the World Wolf (finally) taking out both his Tyrannofexes (1 on Turn 1, the other on Turn 3). At this point they have nothing to stop our armor and our Hammerheads and Typhoons reap a heavy tally, while my Grey Hunters run straight into the gauntlet, forcing them to deal with my Astartes and leaving the Tau unmolested. The result? We again table our opponents. That said, a lot of fun was had by all, and a lot of carnage ensued (always followed by "I HATE YOUR EFFIN JAWS! GAAAH"). I LOLed. A lot...

MVP

Jaws Rune Priest, accounting for both Tyrannofexs, two Nobs with Power Klaws, and generally being a nuisance and distraction.

LVP

Tempest Rune Priest, who periled on a triple six casting Living Lightning the first time against a Zoanthrope (damn that Shadows of the Warp), and then periling yet again against the Big Mek on a double one (the power of course promptly fails to hit or wound). He also now has epilepsy.

Game 3 - Capture and Control (5 objectives), Pitched Battle

Primary Objective: 5 Objectives

Secondary Objective: Kill or break the most expensive enemy unit, kill or break the most expensive enemy commander

Opponents: Tau and Tau

I'll be honest, I had no idea what they were running, only that they were Forgeworld, and ran a whole hell of a lot of firepower. I heard the term XV-9 thrown around a lot, and the biggest difference was their base Toughness 5. As accurately as I can describe it:

Tau 1

Commander, Armament unknown

3 Crisis Suits, Plasmas and Fusion Blasters

6 Fire Warriors, Pulse Carbines

6 Fire Warriors, Pulse Carbines

3 XV-9's, Armament unknown

3 XV-9's, Armament unknown

3 XV-9's, Armament unknown

3 Broadsides, 2 Shield Drones

Hammerhead, Railgun

Sniper Team, 3 Sniper Drones

Tau 1

6 Fire Warriors, Pulse Carbines

6 Fire Warriors, Pulse Carbines

3 XV-9's, Armament unknown

3 XV-9's, Armament unknown

3 Broadsides, 2 Shield Drones

Hammerhead, Railgun

Sniper Team, 3 Sniper Drones

Synopsis

We won the roll off and decided to take first turn, as we figured our firepower could allow us to land a decisive blow first turn, thereby crippling a lot of their return fire early in. It worked and it didn't.

We deploy our entire army. Our opponents deployed 1 Broadside Team, 1 Hammerhead, and both Sniper Teams, and elected to hold everything else in Reserve, with the suits Deep Striking in. Over the course of turn 1, and the bottom of turn 2, sees the Hammerhead's Railgun destroyed, the Broadside Team broken off the table, and both Sniper Teams destroyed. From there the game goes down-hill. By this point I manage to get my Tempest Rune Priest into the center of the table and create a bubble with Tempest's Wrath that covered almost the entirety of the 6' by 4' table. Granted it only inflicted 4 wounds total over the entire course of the game with Dangerous Terrain, but it hampered their movement and tactical decisions so greatly that it cost them the game.

It was really a lot of bad luck on their part, with them only managing to get in 2 or 3 units per turn with their Reserve rolls (i.e. a Commander, a Hammerhead, and 3 units of XV-9's didn't come in till the bottom of Turn 4). We essentially took them out piecemeal and they simply bounced off our army, unable to inflict enough casualties to hamper our ability to take any objectives or do damage.

MVP

Tempest Rune Priest. Without a doubt, his affecting our opponents' tactical decisions on where to Deep Strike, combined with their poor reserve rolls, won us the game.

LVP

My Land Speeder Typhoons, who inflicted a grand total of 3 wounds on the XV-9's, 2 of which were absorbed by Drones. I lost one of the squadron Turn 3, and for the remainder of the game decided to be a chump because he lost his buddy.

All in all a LOT of fun, and I do believe I have found yet another venue for gaming.

All in all a great Tale brother. That sounds like it was one hell of a fun day of gaming. I too know the pain and sorrow of a rune priest giving himself epilepsy. So far I have fielded a Rune priest a grand total of once....and he did it by the end of turn 2. Im not sure I am gonna keep fielding them lol...
