DIY Chapter colours

I'm using the SM Painter to design a Blood Angels successor Chapter that I'll get around to physically making once I have the time and money- No time soon. In the meantime I'll try to turn it into an Index Astartes article.

Right now I'm having a little (lot of) difficulty coming up with something distinctively my own but also sufficiently Blood Angels-ey. I've also decided to avoid black as much as humanly possible, because it's overused and IMO a little dull unless done well- beyond my skills, at least.

Right now I'm exploring the idea of having the arms and hands below the elbow and legs and feet below the knees in arterial red, to symbolise the blood they shed and wade through as part of their duty. However I'm lost as to what the other colour should be. A friend suggested imperial purple, but as much as I like the idea it seems to clash. Would there be a way to make it work, or if not would there be a better colour to use?

Thanks for your time! :HQ:

i have had a play about with some colours and with the knees and arms they way you want them Necron Abyss looks cool for the main body and pauldrons and pack with the detailing done in a bleach bone

How about, instead of black, a dark green? Green compliments red, and keeping the color dark helps keeping the focus on the red, which I'm guessing you want.

Interesting, I'd never thought of that. I've always seen dark green as a Dark Angels trademark. I'm guessing you meant something darker than that, though?

Blood Red and a deep Rust Red maybe

Do you mean the deep red for the body and the blood red for the limbs?

Do you mean something like this?

I've been trying some other stuff, and here's my last attempt to salvage the purple thing. I've ditched the red booties and put some gold on the shoulder trims to act as a buffer between the red and purple:

sm.php?b62c=@hzOfe_hXbsb.iakk7@@@@@@@_@.@@._@@@@hozqS@@@hozqS@@i8khihozqSi8khihozqS__________.hozqS@@@@@@@@@@@@@..&grid=TRUE

Same idea, but with bronze instead of purple and a darker, less aggressively bright red:

sm.php?b62c=@hOIBr_hJ9Lc.iakk7@@@@@@@ia3h6@.@@.ia3h6@@@@hozqS__@hozqS__.hozqS.hozqS__________.hozqS@@@@@@@@@@@@@..&grid=TRUE

Finally, a far more conventional BA scheme. Only the pads and knees to distinguish it:

sm.php?b62c=@hPv4M_iakk7.hozqS@@@@@@@hyOv1@_@@_ia3hn@@@@.@@@.@@_._.@@@@@@@@@@__@@@@@@@@@@@@@__&grid=TRUE

C&C not only welcome, but desperately wanted! ^_^

I see what you mean about Dark Angels, but yeah a darker variant.

But you could go in the other direction. A lighter green, but muted, an almost grey tint to it. The overall scheme would be brighter, but since the green is a more muted almost camo green, the bright red is still the focus.

sm.php?b62c=@hncIm_hWSsT.hu5BY@@@@@@@ia6Gv@.@@hZPVnhZPVn@@@@___@___@@@@__________..@@@@@@@@@@@@@.iakk7&grid=TRUE

Whoops, I didn't mean to let this slip so much.

Codex Grey: I see what you mean. I'll add that concept to the rotation, although I think I'll dampen down the red a bit. I don't want it to take over the scheme completely.

Philip S: While I like that scheme, it reminds me too much of the Crimson Fists. It's given me a bright idea though- That could very easily be a Librarian with red arms, which could be a neat way to tie the army's different schemes together. After all, a BA army with a wide variety of units could include gold, black, blue and white! The red arms would link them all together.

Any comments on the three schemes I posted up there?
