Brother Caleb
I'm wanted a nice layered look for the bones and other armor embellishments characteristic of SW. I'm specifically looking for help with color choices, besides Bleached Bone. Suggestions? Will the black base coat suffice or do I need to pick up some other colors? kittenofdeath
I use black undercoat, calthan brown, bleached bone and skull white, I've been debating trying washes on them but untill I have bone on a model I dont care about as much I'll leave it at that. Requiem of the Wolf
i do the same as kitten of death but i then wash with gryphonne sepia Well...I havent been painting so much as researching and watching painting guides...and so far the Beasts of War painting a SW terminator was a really good one. The job they do on the Terminatus Crux looks really really nice. Marmande
Quick'n'dirty: Basecoat with Dheneb Stone, then wash it two or three times with thinned Gryphonne Sepia wash (be sure to wait for each one to dry), then go over the raised areas with some more Dheneb Stone, give said areas a thinned Sepia Wash, then highlight with Bleached Bone. Time'n'effort: Basecoat with Khemri Brown, wash with Devlan Mud in the crevices, then a layer of 3:1 Khemri Brown:Bleached Bone over most of it, then a 2:1, then 1:1, and finally just Bleached Bone. Keep going with successive areas that are only slightly smaller than the area painted before. Finally, highlight with a mix of Bleached Bone and Skull White that, as before, starts with more Bleached Bone that is slowly overcome by more white. You don't have to use the exact measurements, but that's about how much you want. Shieldwall
It depends on how you want the bone to look like, really. I usually paint two sorts of bone, bright and dark. As for a brighter bone colour: Give a pure bestial brown basecoat. Apply a 80:20 mix of bestial brown : bleached bone The third layer 60:40 Next, apply both colours 50:50 and a fifth layer of 20:80 The darker basecoat should always be visible in the reccesses of course. Those mixes are all rough estimates, one should always work visceral. Next, apply pure bleached bone Highlight with a 50:50 mix bleached bone : skull white and last, a VERY subtle highlight of pure skull white. Turned out like this: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v505/Ferai/P51004762.jpg However, I now prefer a bit of a darker tone, with scorched brown as a basecoat. I don't have any pictures of that available right now, however, if you're interested I'll take some tomorrow. RunningWolfFenris
Back when I played Tomb Kings in WHF (shudders) I did: Base coat black, vermin brown, very light wash with brown ink, dry brush bleached bone, light drybrush skull white. It does ok. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/202475-painting-question/#findComment-2413346 Share on other sites
Shieldwall
Shield, I would love to see the darker option. Thanks to all for the help, especially for the pics, A little late, but as promised: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v505/Ferai/P5290048-Kopie.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v505/Ferai/P5290052.jpg As said, exactly the same paints and layers were used as in my last post, but with a scorched brown basecoat underneath the bestial brown. The lighting is not the best, in real it will turn out to be a lot more vivid. Hope this helps.
