Grey Hunter Pack Size?

Hi,

i ´m searching for the ideal size of my three equaly configured grey hunter packs, know i wanted the opinion of all the wolves out there in (cyber-)space!

7 Grey hunters

-Melter

-wolf standard

-Mark

-Rhino

each of the packs get a WG-leader with P-fist and Combi-Melter.

Do you think the size of the packs is to small or should i devide them in uneven numbers (p.e. 10-6-5).

Thanks in advance for imput!

Well, I dont know about the Long Fangs around here, but I am not quite sure what you are asking for. What are they supposed to do, how are they getting around...? a little more info about the list they will be apart of would be cool to.

Generally speaking Grey Hunter packs show up in one of the following sizes:

1) 5 + Wolf Guard in a Razorback

2) 9 + Wolf Guard in a Rhino/Drop Pod

3) 10 in a Rhino/Drop Pod

On occasion other configurations will show up, such as a full pack with WG and a IC in a Land Raider or some footslogging setup but those aren't nearly as common.

I'm personally somewhat partial to option #1 because I love the extra heavy weapon, however that really is a matter of taste. From what I've seen the Rhino squads are the more popular than the Razorback squads, especially option #2.

I am always fielding 10 with two special weapons. I see no point in ever adding WG to GH squads for a one-time combi shot when I can have 2 special weapon shots all game, or however long the unit can keep them alive.

Wingapo! I understand the reasoning (better Ld, etc) for using WG but for the most part, I'm perfectly content to use a squad of ten with 2 special weapons. It's such a bargain and seems to be a little more efficient too.

Thats almost the same setup that i use but i have a grey hunter with a power sword/axe. There still pretty cheap compared to other marine core choice, but have all the assaulty goodness of a assault squad and almost the firepower of a tactical squad.

I like the Razorback/WG combo, I think it has a lot of merit. You're paying same points (75) as you would for the five guys to fill out to the 2nd special weapon and getting a Heavy weapon instead. Or in the case of the ever popular Las/Plas razorback a heavy weapon and a twin-linked special weapon. You lose out on body count somewhat, but potentially gain a fair amount firepower. Also since you're paying down the cost of your Transport at the same time you buy that weapon, you actually make up a bit of your body count in your next squad.

Given the same choice of 1st special weapon you're going to be paying 12 points less for a heavy weapon razorback + 5 guys + WG /w Combi weapon than you are for a 10 man GH squad in a rhino. If you're buying the squad a special close combat weapon it becomes favorable, since the WG costs 3 points more but has CCWs that are 5 points cheaper, netting you +3 points. Works great with a power fist since they have 2 attacks base. That extra 3 point savings puts it at the 15 point difference needed to pay off the 1st body in your next squad. Meaning you're really only down 3 bodies from a 10-man squad, with a good boost to firepower in exchange.

They're both fine options, but I really like what I can squeeze out of a leaner unit led by a WG. Though at higher points I'd probably try to get the best of both worlds and run 3 Razorback Squads and 2 Rhino Squads, or 4 and 2.

As a personal preference I tend to equip my squads in as versatile a manner as possible. This means my typical pack:

9 Grey Hunters, Meltagun, Rhino

Wolf Guard Pack Leader, Power Fist, Combi-Flamer

I run three of these packs at 1000 or 1500 points, with 2 of them dropped to 8-man to fit a Rune Priest in each. My fourth Grey Hunter pack is:

10 Grey Hunters, 2 Meltaguns, Drop Pod

And they act as my alpha strike unit to knock out serious threats early in the game, or to run as a suicide-distraction for my opponent while the rest of my army advances up.

DV8

I almost always run my Grey Hunters as follows.

9 grey hunters, meltagun, rhino, wolf guard with powerfist and combi-melta. Nice cheap unit that can get any job done. If I have any extra points I will sometimes add in a power weapon, mark of the wolfin and/or wolf standard.

I run 2 different types:

For my normal lists, from 1000-2500 pts I run:

2 Squads of: 10X GH, 2X Melta, MotW, Wolf Banner, PW, Rhino

1 Squad of: 10X GH, 2X Melta, MotW, PF, Rhino

At 500pts though, I typically run:

2X Squads of: 5X GH, 1XM, MotW, PW, Razorback

I run 2 GH units as assault squads in my Thunderwolf army.

Both squads have 8 GHs - meltagun, standard & mark in a Rhino with extra armour. Add to that a WGPL with combi-melta and powerfist and then a Rune Priest.

RP in squad 1 has Chooser, Living Lightning and Murderous Hurricane (or Tempests Wrath)

RP in squad 2 has Jaws & Storm Caller. RP2 is legend as on game 2 with the list he took out a Nightbringer (even a 6 on a d6 is a 16% chance to instantly change a game) and Storm Caller in a Rhino changes the save bubble from 6" to about 9", measure from anywhere on the hull ;)

I have a 3rd home defence GH unit and that is 10x GH - 2 plasmagun, standard, mark with a TDA WGPL with combi melta and chainfist (no more probs with turn 1 drop pod Ironclads).

This list has served me well and while there are TW Lords or Batlle Leaders, TWC, FWs, Lone Wolves, Long Fangs and extra heavies depending on the points, this is my core and my GHs always give a good account of themselves.
