Daemon Warsmith Magnus Haephestus Titannicus

Recommended Posts

Greetings, all!

This is something of a "lead-in" for a Thread I plan to start soon to chronicle the building of my "Work-In-Progress" Iron Warriors Grand Company, called "The Iron Storm" (which, of course, is a shameless rip-off of the title of Graham McNeill's "Storm of Iron" Iron Warriors novel...).

I plan to assemble this Grand Company as an Apocalypse-style formation comprised of three independent Companies (each with its own Captain and area of specialization, again a la Storm of Iron): A Siege Company, An Assault Company, and a Battle Company.

The entire Grand Company is led by a Warsmith who has been elevated by the Chaos Gods (Tzeentch, in particular) to the rank of Daemon Prince, or "Daemon Warsmith". However, when compared to most other Daemon Princes, even those from the Iron Warriors Legion, he could almost certainly be considered "unusual". I posted some pics of him on this site quite some time ago - some of you might have seen him before - but he's undergone some extensive "modification" since then. Here's a bit of appropriate "fluff" background I made to explain his rather "unique" nature...

Daemon Warsmith Magnus Haephestus Titannicus

Options: Wings, Mark of Tzeentch

Psychic Powers: Bolt of Change, Wind of Chaos

Special Rules: Fearless, 4+ Invulnerable Save, Eternal Warrior

*PLEASE NOTE: He's just basecoated so far - I hope to have painted pics up soon!*

Warsmith Magnus Haephestus has led his Iron Warriors Grand Company, “The Iron Storm”, for many millennia. Formerly a powerful Chaos Sorcerer and aide-de-camp to the previous Warsmith of his Grand Company, he slew his Warsmith in single combat (after the Grand Company suffered a particularly disasterous series of defeats against both Imperial forces and against other Traitor Legions) and claimed the title of Warsmith for himself. Revitalizing and re-organizing his Grand Company, he led his warriors on numerous raids against Imperial worlds near the Eye of Terror. His forces terrorized entire sub-sectors of the Imperium – and Imperial citizens across the Segmentum Obscurus quivered in abject fear upon hearing rumors of “The Iron Storm” approaching their worlds.

Seeking ever greater and greater power for himself, Magnus Haephestus made a daemonic pact with his patron, the Chaos God Tzeentch, the Changer of the Ways.

“For your greater glory, my master, I shall continue to wreak destruction and chaos upon the Corpse-God’s Imperium, the like of which has never before been seen…but in return for this mighty and terrible deed, I would ask thee to grant thy servant a boon. I wish to serve you no longer as a mere mortal, but as a mighty Daemon Prince! I seek the limitless power, the incredible strength, the matchless invulnerability and ageless immortality of the Chaos Gods themselves! I would see all those puny mortals who dare to stand against me cower in fear as though they faced the unstoppable might of a Warlord Titan!”

Mighty Tzeentch granted his wish...LITERALLY!

Warsmith Haephestus’s body was transformed into a Daemon Prince-sized representation of a Warlord Titan. This heavily-armored metallic body, combined with the twin Marks of Tzeentch on his leg vambraces, grants him a 4+ Invulnerable Save. ***Also please note that his armored skull "head" looks incredibly similar to the symbolic icon of the Iron Warriors...***

The Jump Booster Turbines mounted on his back Count As Wings, allowing his armored form to soar across the battlefield, landing to crush and tear asunder anything that stands in his way.

His twin shoulder-mounted cannons Count As the Bolt of Change Psychic Power - allowing him to destroy virtually any foe from a great distance - the rapid mutations caused by this terrible power literally tearing the target apart from the inside out.

The twin Vehicle Heavy Flamers mounted on his forearms Count As the Wind of Chaos Psychic Power - allowing him to envelop nearby foes in a deadly cone-shaped blast of white hot flame and coruscating Warp-energy, able to melt through both flesh and armor alike.

His sheer size and power, combined with his massive, Dreadnought-like claws, mark him as a Monstrous Creature, enabling him to strike down enemy troops in hand-to-hand combat with impunity and to rip enemy vehicles apart as though they were made of paper.

His massive body, now no longer flesh and blood but instead a synthesis of nigh-indestructible metal and powerful Warp energy from the depths of the Immaterium, make of him an Eternal Warrior - able to shrug off hits from the most powerful weapons without even noticing.

Now known as Daemon Warsmith Magnus Haephestus Titannicus, he continues to personally lead The Iron Storm (along with his three senior Company Captains – Siege Captain Tyrannix, Assault Captain Argonath, and Battle Captain Invictus - pics of these guys to come soon!) in bloody and merciless raids across the length and breadth of Segmentum Obscurus – honoring his vow to Tzeentch to continue to wreak destruction and chaos upon the Corpse-God's Imperium.

So...what do you think? Does this seem like a good Conversion idea for a "truly" Iron Warriors Daemon Prince? Personally, I thought it would fit quite well with the overtly "Mechanical" thematic emphasis of the Iron Warriors...

Questions, comments and suggestions are, of course, all quite welcome and appreciated.

Thanks,

David'Berzerker'Bowers

Looks awesome.

My only complaint is the marks of Tzeentch - as more of a fluff purist I'd prefer the prince to be undivided (and my undivided BL prince has shown me time and again that the expensive marks aren't necessary.

That said, the added save and extra ranged power seem mechanically appropriate, so my complaint is a very minor one.

The conversion is fantastic. The paint job... ah, you haven't finished painting it yet. Good. I'll wait for final pictures to comment, then.

Love the model, good job.

Someone else is another thread was making a cool daemonprince also with a jump pack for count as wings. He was told though that the chaos FAQ says a dp with wings actually needs wings modelled so he modelled wings on the jump pack like rudders. See what you'd like to do whethe this information I've given you means anything to you or not. Either way awesome model!!!!

@ malisteen:

Thanks very much. I, too, am something of a "fluff purist" (I know that Iron Warriors are only "supposed" to use "Chaos Undivided/Glory" Icons, according to their fluff), and I regret having to stray from it a bit. Unfortunately, the only way I could associate a different ranged Psychic Power (each with its own independent effects) with BOTH the forearm-mounted Heavy Flamers AND the shoulder-mounted cannons was to give him the Mark of Tzeentch (thereby granting him access to TWO different ranged Psychic Powers instead of just one). Also, as you noted, the increased Invulnerable Save (4+) granted by the Mark makes perfect sense, too (because of his armored metallic body).

@ kharn_the_betrayer:

Thank you. I put a good bit of thought into both the conversion concept and the character's background story. Glad you like both!

@ Ali'Slath'Sleresh:

I appreciate the info! I was considering trying to mount some type of "maneuvering verniers" around the lower ends of the jump boosters (which, I suppose, could be considered "wings" of a sort...albeit really small ones)...but I was also thinking about trying to mount some kind of "metallic-looking" aircraft-style wings on him (maybe in-between his back and the jump boosters themselves)...hmmm...this bears more thinking on.

@ Brother Nihm:

Glad you like it! Some time ago, I was looking at the head of an old Epic-scale Warlord Titan that I had, and I just happened to notice that the skull-head on the old model looks awfully similar to the Iron Warriors icon-symbol. Having just recently finished reading Dead Sky, Black Sun at the time, I was trying to think of a way to legally represent a Warsmith on the tabletop that was almost wholly robotic/mechanical (Like the character of Berossus (from the novel), a Chaos Dreadnought who was also the Warsmith of his own Grand Company). Then, I thought...what if I take that "skull-head" and put it on the newer version of the Warlord Titan (which had a more powerful and substantial-looking frame)? How cool would that look? Well, I did just that...and one look at it gave me the idea for creating a Warsmith Daemon Prince whose mortal body had been transformed by the Chaos God Tzeentch (who SO likes to mutate and change things...) into a Daemon-Prince-sized Warlord Titan!

I was in the process of making a prince out of a dreadnought, and saying giving him a huge combi bolter, in the form of (mark of tzeentch with doombolt and wind of chaos), but had problems getting legs and arms on to him without them looking like they were, well, dreadnaught arms, I quite like this model, though i do just see a titan with bits stuck on, it still works well.

  • 3 weeks later...

Here's an update regarding Iron Warriors Daemon Warsmith Magnus Haephestus Titannicus (and, yes, I know he's still not painted yet...but I will be starting on THAT within a day or two at the most). I've been working (for a while now) on a little project to "enhance", shall we say, the model I'm using to represent him, and I just finished it.

Now, if I may - let me ask a question of all you Iron Warriors players out there:

Can YOUR Warsmith model actually SPEAK?

MINE can, now...I was recently playing a game of Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War - Dark Crusade (I was playing Chaos Space Marines, of course (DUH!)), using my Daemon Prince to effortlessly smash my way through some pathetic Imperial Guard forces, when I suddenly had an epiphany:

WHAT IF I could figure out a way to make my Warhammer 40K Daemon Warsmith model actually TALK like the Daemon Prince from the PC game?

The new pics say it all (more or less)...

With the addition of the .mp3 player and speakers to his model base, my Daemon Warsmith can actually be heard saying all of the following quotations/sound effects on the tabletop during a Warhammer 40,000 game:

(1) "THE AGE OF THE FALSE EMPEROR IS OVER AT LAST!"

(2) "THE FORCES OF CHAOS ARE MINE TO COMMAND!"

(3) "I AM DESTRUCTION INCARNATE!"

(4) "NONE CAN STAND BEFORE ME!"

(5) <Sound of "Bolt of Change" Psychic Power>

(6) "DESPAIR - FOR I AM THE END OF DAYS!"

(7) "I HAVE ASCENDED - NONE MAY CHALLENGE ME!"

(8) "THE GROUND TREMBLES WITH EVERY STEP!"

(9) <Sound of thunderous Daemonic Footfalls>

(10) "THEY HEAR THEIR DOOM APPROACHING!"

(11) "I...AM...A...GOD!"

(12) "CROSS ME...AND DIE!"

(13) <Sound of Booster Turbines firing/Daemonic Roar>

(14) "PATHETIC CREATURES! YOU SEEK TO HARM ME?"

(15) "YES...FIGHT! IT WILL MAKE YOUR SOULS ALL THE SWEETER!"

(16) <Sound of Daemonic Laughter>

(17) "THAT'S RIGHT...COME TO ME! COME TO ME AND DIE!"

(18) <Sound of Booster Turbines firing/Daemonic Roar>

(19) "THEY ARE BUT GNATS BEFORE ME!"

(20) "YOUR SOULS WILL BE MINE!"

To hear what he sounds like for yourself, go to the link below (The Iron Storm - My Iron Warriors Army Blog, which I just started - updates coming soon!), and click on the video provided!

So...what's YOUR opinion of my (now) "Talking" Daemon Warsmith?

Is it:

(1) an awesome Conversion idea, or;

(2) Just an unnescessary waste of time?

Questions, comments, and suggestions are always appreciated.
