A few questions from a girl gamer

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, I already introduced myself here so I'll get right to it :)

Below are the questions I've asked and the answers so they're easy to find and give thanks to those who helped :D

Rule Questions

[ ? ] Tank shock: Can you pivot the tank after moving through the enemy?

[ A ] No. - Grey Mage

[ ? ] Can you enter from any of the 4 tables edges with Operate Behind Enemy Lines?

[ A ] Yes. - DV8

[ ? ] How does using a special weapon and an additional normal weapon work in the assault phase?

[ A ] Assaults with Special CCW and Normal CCW: A character with 2 attacks holding a Power weapon and an additional normal close combat weapon and charging will have all the attacks strike using the Power weapon. (The exception to this is the Power Fist, Wolf Claw and Thunder Hammer, for the additional attack you will need x2 of the weapon.). - Valerian and Vash113

[ ? ] What happens when a blast marker hits an enemy unit and a friendly unit that are in close combat?

[ A ] Wounds are allocated to the unit equal to the number of models hit and by the controlling player, so if a blast marker hits your own special character model, you can assign it to members of his unit. - Firenze

[ ? ] Are large multi unit assaults worked out as one big assault?

[ A ] Yes, however, each units tests for morale individually upon losing. - Requiem of the Wolf

[ ? ] Are template weapons on vehicles placed from the muzzle when firing?

[ A ] Yes, in addition the vehicle using the template weapon will not harm itself if the template is over the chassis. - Gman

[ ? ] Are there aspects of the Space Marines Codex the Space Wolves can use (eg: Ironclad Dreadnought) or is it considered to be a stand alone Codex?

[ A ] No, it’s stand alone. - Requiem of the Wolf

Tactics

[ ? ] Wolf Lord: What situations is it best to use him over a Rune or Wolf Priest?

[ A ] Wolf Lords are better against other assault armies or in higher point games where dropping 200pts on an HQ isnt such a liability. I wouldnt take him in less than 1500pts. – Grey Mage

Painting and Modelling

The pics are fine :). For that scheme I think youll actually do well going with a white undercoat, and then painting the black over it... thats what gives it that lighter tone... But Im really not the best painter. *blinks* Actually, a gray base coat would probly do you very well, though I dont usually think of it.

1) Wolf Lords are better against other assault armies or in higher point games where dropping 200pts on an HQ isnt such a liability. I wouldnt take him in less than 1500pts.

2) You cant turn after the tank shock, your stuck going that way once you start. You do get the initial pivot, but it sounds like you knew about that part already eh?

Welcome to the Fang :D.

Wolf Lords are best used in larger battles or when you are sure you can get him into combat

or even better if leading a Thunder Wolf unit

Ive stopped using my Lord against Tau (whom I play more often than not) in favor of 2 Rune Priests with Wrath and Hurricane

He would be good against Necrons and other Marines, but you may have mixed results against bugs (either swarmed by little ones or crushed by the uber big ones)

in general Rune Priests are the most efficient way to go.

Wolf Priest + 15 Blood Claws + Land Raider Crusader = Awesome!

dont quote me but I do believe that you can not change the facing of the tank after the shock

yes use black primer, but remember the darkness in the cracks/crevas is easy to get with an armour wash

Welcome to the forum. I’m a long time 40k player but only started Space Wolves earlier this year.

  • Wolf Lord: What situations is it best to use him over a Rune or Wolf Priest?

It is rather situational, each HQ has their own merits. Ideally an HQ should supplement your army build so it depends what else you have. It also depends on what you are likely to face. These are just my opinion and in no way definitive:

If you are going to have a big unit of Blood Claws then a Wolf Priest will supplement them well by boosting their leadership and allowing them to re-roll to hit with their massive quantity of WS3 attacks.

If you are likely to face a lot of Eldar, Daemons or Chaos Lash armies then the Rune Priest provides good psychic defence.

Wolf Lord is the man to choose if you want a powerful close combat character to carry close combats your way.

My army is themed around Logan Grimnar and his Wolf Guard entourage so I’m rather tied in to my HQ choice. I like a Rune Priest for psychic defence as my second HQ.

You mentioned you like killing Tau, Necrons and Nids. Against Tau the Wolf Lord is probably overkill as your basic Grey Hunters are going slaughter almost anything the Tau have to offer in close combat. Against them I think that the Rune Priest would be good as they have no access to psychic hoods to block your powers. Living Lightning would enable you to hit long range units hiding in the far corners of the board and Jaws of the World Wolf would be good against tough but low initiative models like Broadsides. Necrons are similarly lacking in psychic defence and so the Rune Priest would be useful there too.

Nids have strong psychic defence and close combat capabilities so against them I would recommend the Wolf Lord for the extra assault capabilities.

What does your boyfriend play?

  • Tank shock: After declaring and moving through an enemy unit, can you pivot the tank after so that it's best armour is facing enemy heavy weapons?

I’m pretty sure you can’t.

  • Painting: Will a black basecoat work to acheive the paint scheme pictured below? Or something more Grey?

I’m still experimenting with paint schemes. I think that a black undercoat and then a basecoat of Adeptus Battlegrey, leaving the black in the depths of the recesses, should get you on the right lines. The best thing to do would be try contacting the painter of the picture you’ve shown and ask their advice.

Wolf Lord: What situations is it best to use him over a Rune or Wolf Priest?

While each HQ type can be situational, more often than not you'll find you aren't necessarily sure who or what you'll be facing. Point for point a Rune Priest (or pair of Rune Priests) offers the most bang for your buck, as their powers can be both defensive and offensive, and they can be used to support your army quite well without investing a lot of points.

Tank shock: After declaring and moving through an enemy unit, can you pivot the tank after so that it's best armour is facing enemy heavy weapons?

No. When declaring a tank shock, you pivot your tank in the direction you want to go, and then move in a straight line. Once finished your move, you may not then pivot again.

Painting: Will a black basecoat work to acheive the paint scheme pictured below? Or something more Grey?

Yes. The armor looks like it's a mix of Adeptus Battlegrey and Codex Grey, with further highlights of Codex Grey. The red is Red Gore or Dark Flesh blended up with a bit of Blood Red and it looks like a hint of Elf Flesh. The bone can be achieved with Khemri Brown, working your way up through Bleached Bone and up to Skull White (although for the iconography it looks like Bleached Bone was the base). Silver is Boltgun Metal highlighted with Mithril and you can wash it with Badab Black. The gold looks like Shining Gold, mixed with Mithril for a highlight, and then a Devlan Mud wash.

Looking forward to see what you paint up.

The scheme is great! Lets my eyes rest from all the bluish colors, at least.. A white Primer is better perhaps if you're looking for a lighter grey.

On to the Qs:

Wolf Lord: Take him very cheap, or very expensive (as in land raider expensive cost). He's a good guy to be fluffy (and choppy), but it depends on the army you're trying to build, the players around you, and some other stuff (which i can't recall). Against Tau, i would say its fun to watch the opponent's face as he smash his gunline and massing up the kill. He eats Orks for breakfast, Tyranids for Lunch, and a little Tau for dessert. Absolutely tasty.

On the situation, i would say when you have enough point, or just wanna play for fun.

Tank Shock:

Pivoting before ramming, no turns afterwards is what I understand so far. The logic is quite simple: You can't turn a 5 tonne ramming Tank at full speed ahead. It will flip over, kaboom, and translated to Damage: Wreck.

Oh, and welcome to the Fang! :D

EDIT: forgot something. It was supposed to be: "Oh, and welcome to the Fang! :Elite: And the hobby! Be prepared to feel the grimdark future as your money drained by the notorious GW..

On the Tank Shock quesiton. The rule book isn't too clear, but what it says is:

"When moving a tank, the player can declare that the vehicle is going to attempt to make a tank shock attack instead of moving normally." - which - I'd say - means that you Tank Shock *instead* of moving - so you don't get to do *anything* you normally can in the movement phase, such as turning...

I *assume* this still counts for how far you moved as far as shooting goes - so if you tank shocked 10" then you moved at Cruising Speed and so can't fire... I can't find the rule that there used to be that allowed the tank to pivot in the shooting phase if it didn't move in the movement phase, so assume that it's been taken out in 5th ed (It's present for Walkers, but not Tanks)...

All in all - I'd say from the rules that no, you can't tank shock and them pivot...

lol.. im inclined to disbelive your a woman at all simply becouse you said "IM A WOMANZ!" *shrug* but it dosnt matter

That figure is a little darker then the space wolves color of Shadow Grey. It looks more akin to the 13th company Codex Grey. But yes, Black base works for darker colors.

how many points do you normally play? usually take a wolf lord and wolf priest at 1.5k plus battles (give saga of the warrior born a go on your wolf lord and see how many enemy you can kill!)

welcome to the hobby...:)

Normally around 750/1000 as my boyfriend builds up his new Tau army.

I think I prefer the Saga of the Bear as needing more 'oomph' in close combat against the Tau isn't what the DR ordered!.

Actually I find announcing myself and a little cleavage get's me exactly what I want! :)

Wait a minute....

How long you been painting models like that?

I mean....

WOW!!!! Great job. Seriously good eye to detail and the way you made the brass pop is amazing.

No no no that was in my bf's picture folder I have no idea who painted it otherwise I'd ask them directly!

yes a black base coat works really well. it is how i do my models. and that paint scheme is what i shoot for as well, but am no where near that good.

EDIT:

o and i feel that a light wash of badab black actually helps the color but that is to my taste.

Welcome to the Fang, I think you'll find it cooler here than that place called Terra, which for most of us here is a good thing. May your battles be many and your victories be glorious.

If you paint your models up in a similar way to those models then they will look quite stunning, it's a nice scheme.

Hang on, newcomer to the forum, many replies and no brawl? Are we forgetting ourselves?

Actually I find announcing myself and a little cleavage get's me exactly what I want! ^_^

I see what you did there...

But I'm pretty sure you can't pivot after a tank shock, but I do remember the good ol days when you could squish units

First off awesome model!!!

1-Dunno, never tried any priests

2-I think so, pivoting doesn't count as actual movement, but i may be wrong

3-That grey looks great as it is, I know it's not yours but can you try and find the recipe for it... please

4-Yes, i did not bother to read through this thread much before answering, but I'm tired

I believe brother, that if questioned, we all saw that Blood Claw run into your fist...silly young one...

Welcome to the Fang, and the best damn chapter in the game...the Space Wolves.

As for your question about HQ's...It really depends...I find in lower point games,if your getting CC alot, Wolf Priests are great at a 100 points. as discussed before the Rune Priest is a good option. I run with a Wolf Lord alot, but thats because I use a Thunder wolf mount for him and I can run him into my enemy's gun line and watch him end up eating half of it most fights.

As for the Tank shock question, there is one and ONLY one exception to not being able to move. A Iron Priest has the Saga of the Iron Wolf. It allows a extra D3" movement at the end of your movement if you have him in the vehicle. This is a sneaky way to accomplish spinning to present better armor.

Although generally you would want to use Tank shock for a couple reasons. First is forcing enemys off an objective, second is to clump them up for a Template attack.3rd is because your vehicle's weapons are destroyed and you can't do anything else with it though most times its better to use them as mobile cover in that situation.

Now...Ramming Vehicles on the other hand *grins* thats a different story. though even then there are only a couple vehicles you want to be using to ram other vehicles. A Vindicator or Predator that has lost its weapons, since you pretty much have to get a full 12 inch movement to get a good chance of busting enemy armor,Or a Land Raider. In my mind Land Raiders are the best option for ramming other vehicles,as you can move 12 inches, still fire and it ends up being a S9 attack.

And Alba...why would it come to a question? Oh yes...and just to keep up with the atmosphere *picks up full Mead keg and rolls it to the newcomer* sit down pup and get comfortable. Hear some tales, have some drinks and possibly a fight or five.

You never know when one of those pesky inquisitorial types is sticking their nose in where it's not needed...

this is madness! a new pup arrives, shows some cleavage and you all forget our traditions!24 replies and none of you offers the pup even a sip of ale!

*trows spjaco to the bar*

"fetch the new pup some ale will you, pup?"

*and now sits back and watches the brawl evolve*
