Something thats been bothering me...

Recommended Posts

Everyone likes Wolf Guard in TDA right? Sure. Might not be the most cost effective WG choice, but its damn cool all the same. Also, cool that we can put an Ass Canner or a HF in the squad too.

Now thats said I'll get to my question. How come almost everyone models the Heavy weapon WG with another bought special weapon? Am I missing something in the rules where thats anything, but a points sink? He gets a PW included in the cost of the TDA so why put more points on him? With a HF its not bad, but an AC?

Thats 63 pts BEFORE they add the shiny Chainfist/Power Fist.(these two seem to be the most popular choice) CF puts you at almost 80 pts for one single WG...which has to be 1 of 5 in order to get the heavy weapon.

Am I being obtuse?

Yes, I know this is a dumb topic.

not being obtuse at all, and you have a fair point.

i DO have a assault cannon and chainfist WG in tda, but the squad also has a few "meatshield" TDA in the pack. I place the "weakest" wounds on him to keep him alive, but know that the dice will determine whether he lives or dies...

Its also because the idea is about "make sure the most useful one survives the longest" so since it allready has an assault cannon, giving it a chain fist makes it nasty against vehicles too.

I figured that was the common approach given our fortuitous wound allocation trickery. Its just something I've wondered about for a while because its very common and I just built mine with a PW without even considering it.

Mainly because I liked the PW arm angle. Paired with the balding wolverine superstache head it sort of looks like my WG is lugging his huge ass canner and about to lick the blade of the PW.

On my TDA wolf guard with either cyclone or asscan, I toss on a frost blade. The reason being is that both of them are being detached to Long Fang squads and could use the extra cc effectiveness. Probably not really needed, but nice nonetheless

Ooh, Ass Canner WG added to a Long Fang Squad. NICE!

You could even run em around in a standard landraider, just for added punch.

I've built a 4-man pack of WG in TDA (to accompany an IC in large games), but have yet to actually field them simply because I haven't played a big enough game since putting them together.

That said, they're pricy, but they do have one nice advantage over SM Terminators, which is raw customizability. Vanilla Terminators have very limited options by comparison.

They also get a very steep discount on a lot of items while wearing TDA - don't underestimate this. It's actually cheaper to buy TDA, a Wolf Claw, and a Storm Shield than a Wolf Claw and Storm Shield with no TDA.

Finally, although nobody ever seems to do this, you *can* field them with basically no upgrades. They're a good bit cheaper than Codex Terminators if you don't buy any upgrades, though no quite as good in combat as Assault Terminators. Replacing all of their Power Weapons with Wolf Claws makes WG Terminators marginally cheaper than Codex Terminators, pretty mean on the attack, and still able to engage enemies at range with their Storm Bolters. Alternatively, replacing all of their Storm Bolters with Combi-weapons gives them a rather nasty first round of shooting, only slightly diminishes their ranged effectiveness thereafter due to Relentless, still leaves them quite capable in close combat with their free PWs.

Basically, Vanilla Space Marines get specialized options, and we get the option to specialize. Don't bother trying to field a squad of Codex Astartes style Hammer-Terminators, though - those would ruin your budget.
