Arjac

Recommended Posts

I love the SW special characters, especially Arjac, but is he worth the points? I'm planing on using a squad of WG in TDA anyways, but I'm torn between Arjac, Wolf Priest, Rune Priest

or

Bjorn, WP, RP for my characters

Can't decide (but slightly angry that both require conversions, modeling/painting aint my thing)

I'm trying to make a balanced force with some transports and some shooty, it's mostly for fun, maybe some low stakes tournys at my local GW bunker.

Totally worth it. He's awesome in CC of course. Especially with that extra first round shield atk for 5 Str 10 T-hammer attacks on the assuault. And if you can land his Thor throw on a MC/IC its even more potential killy. (With the initiative reduction to 1 if you read the rules that way) The times when Arjac didnt do well it was my bad placement of his drop pod / transport.

Also, try mixing some power armored WG in with your Termi's. It can save alot of points, with a good load out on equipment it doesn't lower the effectiveness of the pack, allows for good wound allocation, and if you have room/points you can toss in a basic WG or 2 with no upgrades for ablative wounds.

I think it really depends on the rest of your list and what you need. I absolutely think arjac is worth it. He's an untargetable hq. I use him with Grey Hunters in a Landraider. I like it because 1, arjac now becomes scoring and he's hard as nails with 2 wounds, eternal warrior, 2+/3++ and a wolfstandard to reroll any 1s which might take a wound off him. I also deck out that GH squad with motw, pw and 2 specials, and play them aggressively. With Arjac in the unit there isn't anything they can't take out, and has become a pseduo deathstar of scoring

He's a great piece in and of himself, the problem is he has trouble "fitting in". Our assault terminators are too expensive to really consider seriously, and he's gonna feel out of place in a Tactical squad. He can't join TWC, and Bloodclaws take a lot of investment to be worth it. He's a great guy without much of a real home, as far as I can see. If I was playing in a very high points game, I'd probably throw him in a Land Raider C. with a Wolf Priest and 13 Blood claws. Other than that though, as great as he is I see hard time utilizing him to his full potential. He really, really wants to be in assault but has nobody fit to take him there.

I really disagree with him not fitting in. He fits in as well as anyone in TDA does. I do agree wg terminators are expensive and I have a hard time convincing myself to use them because of the cost. I do love my land raiders though. They allow me to have all the advantages of the 10 man GH pack and still get the benefits of a WGPL as well.

I also think the ability to hide a terminator in a large squad is a big asset other chapters miss out on. Also we have a level of customization for our TDA that's unheard of to other chapters, but we pay for it.

We also don't have it any worse off than any other chapter of SM or even chaos space marines. They can teleport, we can drop pod. Other than that, everyone is forced to pony up for a Landraider if you don't want them walking for the rest of the game following the turn they arrive. (Grey Knights can cheat if they are allied with IG, as they can ride in chimeras, and codex SM's can teleport around with a librarian).

For me Arjac has a few good fits.

First and formost with a 10 man GH decked out GH squad Banner/Flm/MG/MotW/PW riding in a LRC with EA. In a high point game a RP with Storm Caller is a nice addition providing the LRC and there after the unit with a 5+ cover save, making it a hard beast to kill. Keep in mind you will have about 650 points wrapped up in this unit which makes it a bit of a God Squad so best for 2k lists and a real nice unit for a 2.5K list. Basically this unit can take on anything in the game and come out ready to roll through the next target.

Next is with a 8 man GH squad in a Drop Pod. The trick here is make sure you have at least 3 DP in your list as if your oppenent deployes in reserve or the like, you want to make sure you are landing the unit where it can be most effective. At 400 points its a lot of wasted manpower sitting out in the open if you forced to drop on turn 1 without a target. Keep in mind this unit is slow so dont drop in on fast targets.

Arjac can do pretty well with a WG squad around him, you just have to go el cheapo with the rest of the squad, such as 4 WG in TDA 2 default and 2 with SS/PW.

The best tip I can provide is always assign the auto kill wounds on him until he losses his first wound. With Eternal Warrior and 3+ Invol save if you rolling well, he might just never die and in the process help keep his squad alive and kicking.

Our Termies are not bad. You just have to use them right.

We have cheap termies if you leave some with power weapons and this helps kill off other termies. I usually crush other chapter termies in melee, cause I have about 3 go before with 6-9 power weapon attacks. Thining them out. Then a couple of fists to finish the deal. Or Arjac with his hammer of doom.
