Tales of Vengence

So I had a bit of a brain storm for a story based around some of my Chaos Space marines. Short version: one of my aspiring champions reminds himself what brought him to this point. Comments, critique and criticism welcome and encouraged.

Hyperios stood on the cliff edge and looked out across the field. The bodies had been laid out in what had once been a lush field, the blood had already colored the ground a dark, slick, brown. It had been a lush field, before Hyperios and his brother marines had come to this world seeking materials. Before Hyperios and his brother marines had been forced to flee for their very survival from the very guns of the Imperium they had guarded. Before they had been betrayed by the very Imperium that had lied to them, kidnapped them, changed them, and then finally betrayed them. Branded as traitors and heretics and traitors, Hyperios and his fellow marines had simple been full filling their orders.

Even now, after more than ten decades the bitter taste of betrayal still left an acrid taste in his mouth. For more than half a century, Hyperios had served under Captain Antilion. A fine commander. Hyperios would have died a dozen times over is Antilion had commanded it. And thus it was, that when Antilion was charged with countering a Xenos invasion, Hyperios and his unit went with their captain. For 9 years, Antilion had lead his brother marines against the invaders. Through the fiercest battles, the most under handed tactics, the most dishonorable ambushes, Antilion led on and Hyperios followed. For 9 years, they fought. Then, just as they believed the war was finally won they marched to consolidate their forces in preparation for further operations, Antilion received word that the xenos had returned on the sunward most planet, and so the war seemed ready to re-ignite.

After a fierce 6 month engagement, they returned to the planets they had known as their homes for the last decade only to find that the inhabitants of the planets had cast aside their oaths of loyalty to the Imperium and allied themselves with the Tau. If the children of the Imperium would not honor the Imperium then they would be destroyed. Antilion made the orders, Hyperios and the other sergeants followed them. In a bloody year long purge, the Ultramarines fought to either destroy the traitors or to remind them of their true allegiances.

At the dawn of the last day of the year, the familiar sight of a flight of Thunderhawks was observed coming across the sky. It seemed that Antilion’s mission was at an end. Hyperios could still remember the feelings he had when he saw the dark green hull of the thunderhawks hull. A feeling of exhaustion and accomplishment. All he had known for close to decade had been these few marines. Nearly forgotten were the daily oritary of Chaplin Casius. The stories of Librarian Tigurius’ piercing glance had become little more then fables. He could remember how he welcomed the celebratory return to his chapter. He knew their deeds of the last decade would be greatly honored.

Then the first shells had landed, one of the first had been barely two meters from Hyperios when it detonated and he had been thrown through the air by the explosion. The shrapnel from the explosion had torn through his face and by all rights should have been his death. It was only due to the loyalty of his squad that he survived. They had recovered him and then managed to escape. It was then that his brother marines told him that Antilion had been killed.

Finally Hyperios saw the truth. Calgar had seen the abilities of Antilion, he had seen a future Chapter Master in him. He had seen a threat to his position. He had orchestrated the elimination of that threat. Calgar had betrayed Antilion and his entire company. They had all been betrayed.

Hyperios could still remember the first time he felt the cold steel of his artificial skull plate that day. The unmoving material, forever etched in one form. Hyperios swore on his own war scar, that he would fight to avenge Antilion’s memory. He would bring death to the Ultramarines that had betrayed him. He would bring ruin to the Imperium that created them. He would destroy the Emperor who sired the Imperium.

Hyperios saw the priests and sorcerers moving about the bodies. Suddenly the blood in the field began to coalesce around one of their number. From where Hyperios stood, it appeared as if the blood flowed up onto the body, as if gravity itself had been turned inside out. The blood began to seep into the persons’ mouth. then his nose. Then his eyes. Then his ears. Against all logic, the blood moved it’s own accord. The individual fell forward, heaving as if attempting to scream. Suddenly his body ruptured and tore asunder as being of great power tore out from within. The creature stood up, it’s size increasing with every moment. Already, scarcely a hand full of seconds following it’s material birthing, it stood at twice the height of a man. The blood dripped from its’ body while it sizzled and evaporated from it massive bronze ax.

Now, it unfurled its’ wings. Standing at more than five time Hyperios’ own height, the creature reared it’s massive bestial head and roared a challenge to the sky itself. In response the sky took on a slight red hue and the creature looked toward a base in the south. It would unleash it’s torrent of blood on the damnable lackeys of the Imperium. It would unleash an unending war in this system. It would lay the first stones in a burning path that would end only with Hyperios’ death, or with the death of Calgar and the Emperor.

Heh, you may annoy some ultramarines fans with this one, but i hate them (the smurfs, not the fans) so it's all good.

You tend not break up your sentences too well, it doesn't bother me personally but someone just said it about me so i guess it may be a bad thing.

One thing i noticed

'when he saw the dark green hull of the thunderhawks hull'

no need for the second 'hull'

Otherwise, it's looking promising. The idea of Bad ultramarines is a fun one.

Darkchild

I'm not terrible worried about annoying Ultra-smurf players. I'm just that kind of person.

Hyperios could still remember the feelings he had when he saw the dark green hull of the thunderhawks hull.

So wait, Mel Gibson can make a movie where he fights to free the english from the english in England, but I can't have the dark green hull of the Thunderhawks hull?

Yeah, that's what I get for writing this snippet at 1 in the morning when I've been up since 6. Oh well. Live, learn, adapt, evolve.
