Honour Guard

Oddly enough the Relic blade on the HG models (including Champion) actually doesn't replace anything. So you could switch to a power weapon on your Champion if you were in need of the extra attack and attacking models with T3.

Question: Would adding a bare chaplain be worth it? Or is that to points heavy

Can be worth it but things do get a little points heavy at this point. Thing to remember is a Chaplain is 2 wounds and has a 4+ invulnerable, so you could add his and remove 2 Honour Guard from a 5 Man squad to keep the same amount of wounds in the unit and grant you more resilence to shooting. The benefits of the Chaplain's re-rolls out weigh the loss of a single models attacks, especially on the Relic Blade models.

The only army(ies) I think a fist would be better for using against is Nids and other marines. Nids cos your going last anyway, and Marines for the IK factor (Although its a diceoff cos youll be getting hit at the same init by other fists

Actually those 2 armies and are the ones that absolutely don't need power fists on a Master! The Master strikes before all MCs in the Tyranid list apart from a Hive Tyrant, whilst a lack of frag grenades means parking him and his HG in the way of anything in their army will result in them going first. Even Genestealers will have a nasty shock charging a full strength HG squad with Master and Chapter Banner!

As for Marines, only their HQ choices can be instant killed and for that it is no way worth giving up striking at Initiative when you continue to wound on a 2+.

I want to try out Honour Guard again after all this theorycrafting

This ain't no theorycrafting! I have used the unit I have been talking about in most games I've played for the past 3 years (even 4th edition).

I have a question, i know a few people run a basic chapter master with SS/relic blade with thier HG, but wouldnt Calgar be the better choice.

although more expensive he adds some fisty goodness incase you run into a dreadnought, he also has eternal warrior incase a railgun or lascannon/meltagun hit gets through the inv save.

not only that bu with the banner he gets 7 attacks on the charge!, and if you wanted to fight with his sword he re-rolls his misses!

He does reek of cool and hardness, but I haven't the bottle to use such an expensive character alongside an expensive unit inside an expensive transport (Landraider for his Terminator armour that I would just have to take if I take Calgar).

But it probably does work well enough, as it makes the unit that little bit more of a beast. If memory serves, Seahawk and Brother Tual both have used the HG with Calgar to great effect. Add in a Chaplain and Calgar is horrifically offensive!

I'm actually more inclined to use a thunderhammer/armor/shield combo on my master with a grenade launcher attachement, as I'm not only equipping my other Guard with the A.G.L's, I'm also not wasting the CM's BS5.

Not only that but because they're mostly a sit-and shoot unit the CM will probably strike first against most non SM foes, making his hammer very dangerous.

The unit, depending on its size, may soak up quite a bit of fire from enemy units because it's such a nuisance, and if they ignore it/eventually forget about it. They'll run out of cover to smash something to bits.

True the master will usually hit last, but he'll more than likely make all his attackes and inevitably kill whatever he hits.
