Chapter Name

I am in the process of creating a chapter who's Primarch is Rogal Dorn. In the process of going through the DIY chapter guide and filling in the information for my chapter. It dawned on me that I should name them "The Sons of Dorn". I decided to do a google search of the name just to see if anything came up. As I don't want to steal ideas from someone. The search showed that there is a book about the Imperial Fist named "Sons of Dorn". My question is could I still use this name or should I think of another?

Your entire sentence is a contradiction, because you cannot steal an idea you didn't know someone else had. It's like saying one culture stole the idea of bread from another one. Secondly, it doesn't matter if you use the same name, because you will never meet that person, at any time, ever, anywhere; more importantly, you will never encounter that army.

 

On a personal digression, I was looking under the bathroom sink, and I found a master's degree of library science with my name on it. I cannot show it to you now, because really all I wanted was toilet paper and I couldn't find any. Anyway, the internet has this to say on the matter.

 

The correct answer to that your actual question is you should get a better name. is that unless the idea is that they look exactly like Dorn, and are otherwise obsessive imitators of Dorn, you should get a better name.

I've never heard of a chapter named the Sons of Dorn, but I'm not really a fluff expert (especially when it comes to Black Library). The Sons of Dorn is a perfectly good name for a chapter, and very in keeping with the style GW uses for their chapter names.

Black Templars regularly refer to themselves and their brothers as Knights,

how about something like 'The Knights of Dorn' instead, gives it more of a crusading feel?

You really can't use Rogal Dorn as a primarch cause well he is dead. Also you would have had to be one of the old Legions to do that. none of the new chapters have primarchs. They have chapter masters but not primarchs. A primarch is more or less a "son" of The Emperor this is a no go for new ones. Also looks like the name is taken might want to go for a new one. Ran into the whole name problem my self, which sucks since its a really good name. That is only for the sake of fluff though.

 

Now If your just doing it because you wanna then don't let me stop you from using Dorn. Just let it make sense and original names are best names. Trust me on that one.

I don't think he was asking could he use the actual Primach to found the chapter. :)

Given that the Dorn gene-seed would mean they were genetically linked to Dorn himself, you can go right ahead and use the name 'Sons of Dorn'.

You'd be a successor chapter of the Imperial Fists, like a lot of chapters here on the Liber (Ol' Dorn's a popular guy in these parts :P )

Sorry if I wasn't clear enough. I meant that The Sons of Dorn would be using Rogal Dorn's gene seed and would be a succesor chapter of the Imperial Fist. And well to me the name is original as I didn't hear of it before i came up with it. So I'm not sure what I will do as I really like the name.

Sons of Dorn is a very cool name. Who cares if someone else, somewhere on the planet also uses it - you can too! There are literally thousands upon thousands of people who all play Ultramarines with their own representation of that Chapter, there's no reason you can't use Sons of Dorn.

 

Come up with a cool background story, color scheme and maybe a battlecry and away you go!

Handy hint- Replace 'sons' with 'scions'. Sounds nearly the same but it's a less common word.

Thanks Maleagant. I've been working on a rough draft for the Sons of Dorn and will have it up here in the next hour or two.

 

Chaplain, that does sound like a neat idea kind of reminds me of Robin Hood and his merry men.
