Blood Legion

Recommended Posts

Hey folks. I haven't been on in a while due to work, life and dogs peeing on my computer. Yay! so I've been working slowly on my diy chapter. I finally even set on a name for them. The blood legion. Ive finished a command squad, a terminator squad and a couple of other things. Most of the models are about are only halfway through basic coats and I will be starting the detail work soon. Also sorry about the quality of light in the photos here. Here goes.

So, still hoping for some comments, if they look bad please let me know. I have gone and looked at that lexicanum link and the whole tiger stripe thing I can forget about. Hell, I can just call them Legionaries of blood or Legionaries sanguine. I want to post the progress ive made but that wont be happening for a month at least. I fell from a 3rd story window, broke my back, pelvis, shattered both my wrists and a couple more things. As it is I'm typing from my phone with one finger. Stuck in a hospital, give me some feedback. It helps the time go by.

I love the conversions but the paint it so so. Im not a good painter at all so I got no room to say anything but it does make me a little sad inside to see awesome conversions with blah paint jobes.. this could be a reason I never get anything painted lol. Over all I love the idea thoe.

Ooof. I have to apologize on 2 accounts, the lighting is horrible and I haven't solidly figured out the macro setting on my camera. Aside from that they aren't even close to being finished as far as painting goes. I need to wait for my wrists to come back together. Thanks and cheers!

first off sorry to hear about your accident

secondly man i think your green stuff skills are pretty good. have you ever tried using s bit of vaseline in your green stuff? just a dab in a half inch sized ball really helps when trying to smooth the surfaces, also water on your tool helps.

to me it just looks like you rushed the painting part of it. which is easy cuz when you model a bunch of stuff you cant wait to see it shining in its full glory.

but what i do see what you could do to enhance is pretty simple, heres a few ideas....

when painting colors that are lighter than black on a black primed model its best to use a foundation paint or start with a mix of a darker color with the desired color. this will eliminate the color of looking transparent and blochy which i see here and there on your marines. for blues and greens i prefer black. for yellow i like brown. for red dark browns or black is good. but this can be used for the future.

the main thing with your minis i see tho is all of the reccesed areas like the creases in the armor plates and weapons are all painted in the main tone which is reducing your models outlines and depth. this can be remedied with a few techniques without stripping and repainting your models

1- washing.... either using a premade wash or watering down a significantly darker shade of the area's color. one tip ive been told is to put a minute amount of dish soap in the wash to make it get into the recessed areas better. this is a great technique for mass producing models and when you arent able to do fine highlights or lining of recessed areas.

2- lining....get a really fine brush and outline the creases with a darker hade of the areas color. this is a technique that requires some practice and a steady hand

3-pen lining...there are also super fine marker pens that are a great and easy way to line areas. the smallest ones tho i find are only available in black but thats ok because you are looking for things to be defined and it looks great from a gaming table distance.

the main thing i can say for your future models is when your painting around the deeper areas dont hit those with the end result color unless your planning to use a wash over the area.

all of the high lighting techniques will improve over time but practicing on not getting into the creases with light colors will greater enhance definition and is by far the best way to go from the start.

by the way i seen youre a gamer from seattle...where do you frequent? i played miniature games up there since the early 90s until recently when i moved out of state.

That scout....he looks sort of comical. Between the huge pistol, the significantly smaller knife, and the fact that he just looks somewhat stunted, he just looks funny.

Other than that, I like your conversions, especially the dual-swords captain and the sargeant with the chainblade hand.

those were the first scout models minus the custom head he put on there. i think they came out in tyranids first before coming out in 40k.... damn ive been playing this stuff too long lol

Debauchery 101: thanks for the tips, I can't wait to get Yworking on these guys again. Ive gotta bust out the simple green and strip a couple of them. I have done hi lights but my lack of camera skills is killing a lot of the recess. As for the scuplting I generally use water on my blade, I have horribly shaky hands and have pretty much given up on smoothness so I try to go back and file it down. With Seattle I haven't really found a gaming club yet.

Argon: Yeah ithat scout is pretty funny looking especially when you set him next to the new plastic ones.

So after much thought ive decided to simple green pretty much all of the painted marines and paint them as angels of iron. There seems to be no history written for them and theyre quite similar to my scheme already. Now I just need to buy 4 tons of purity seals and get back to work. Cheers! Two weeks till I'm able to walk and the third place I'm going is to the store to play a damn game!
