Basing models

So the time has once again come to start painting again (yey)! But that also means i've got to base some men.

And I was wondering how you guys did it. So three questions:

1. What colour is Baal?

2. What GW Flocks/Rocks do you use?

3. Do you think the basing kits are worth it?

Baal is said to be red...so I think of Mars basically. You could use any modelling sand/ballast and base it with dark flesh, and drybrush with scab red and then red gore. Wash with a watered down Devlan mud/sepia to make it look like a more earthy red so as not to match too much your angels.

I haven;t really seen much in the way of BA's based to be specifically mounted on what looks like baals soil, most are kind of general rocky terrain/urban rubble. I suppose that is just because generally BA's would not be fighting on their home soil in most games.

The basing kits...They are rather expensive, BUT they do contain some very nice pieces of resin that can add a little character, but it's nothing you couldn't do yourself with a horde of spares. I have one myself but it was a gift...Would I buy it myself? Yes if i could find it cheaper.

Totally agree with Iron Cobra here...those basing kits are expensive and you can do it all yourself for cheaper, especially if you have a good hobby store near you.

Myself; I use brown colour for basing rather than red and use a flock with a dry grass/fake rock mix. The reason is that is suits a variety of boards. I think just desert...fits into well just desert. The other mix is a more allrounder...though it looks a little out of place in a city fight.

I have gray rocks/rubble, brown bases, and greenish grass for the same reason. It looks at home on any board except desert, which I rarely play on.

I do not know how to answer 2 or 3, but I do remember Baal being described as a desert planet with Red Sand.. a bit like Mars.. or am I wrong there?

mars is supposed to be brown "supposedly" but i think Baal is a red sorta color

I thought red bases took away from the models. I wanted a waistland look with toxic stuff but when with a volcanic look with lava flows. I did models of these with greenstuff, some cork, and then I made molds and castd them all in resin. I love the way they look. I dont think it takes away from models and gives it a dark feel.
