Karsus
Hi all. I'm planning to attach someone to my Grey Hunter squads in Rhino, but I cannot decide between Rune Priest and Wolf Guard. Rune Priest has good psychic defense, higher LD, good shooting power, power weapon, better non-weapon wargear option, but costs a lot. Wolf Guard is cheaper, can have better weapons, but otherwise plain. I think psychic defenses are important these days, but I'm not sure how much defense is too much either.... Tell me your wisdom and experiences! P.S. kinda unrelated to the initial question, how many Long Fang squads do you think will be enough? Unless you're really strapped for points and need a cheap HQ the Rune Priest is better than the WGBL as an overall HQ choice in the majority of cases. Psychic Powers and Defense are just plain worth more than a stripped down Wolf Lord most of the time. "Enough" is a strange question. Long Fangs are great, and make solid additions to any army that already has what it needs to stand on it's two feet when objectives are at stake. It depends on the points level obviously. Honestly they're hard to go wrong with, I've run 2 full squads in games as small as 700 points and done amazingly well. WG Vrox
What role in your army do you plan for them are you thinking 9 GH with MG, PP, PW, MotW, WS in a Rhino geared for assaulting the front lines or are you wanting a objective holder that can setup a fire-base? I like my RP with a Chooser at 110 points in the backfield holding a secured or home-base objective casting LL out of the fire port of a Rhino with SB and PMSB. Makes for a very effective force. I find that 6 GH with either Flamer or PG is best for this role. If you looking for a unit that is going to storm the front lines, a WG with Combi-Melta and PF is a better choice. He can not be targeted in CC and provides the unit a much needed LD increase and 2 Str 8 attacks. Not bad for 43 points. Now if you want to deck out a RP in TDA with a WTN, WTT, MB, Chooser, Combi-Melta/RW slap him in a DP with 7 decked out GH, a WG with CM/PF in PA you can be pretty effective when he is one of many pods coming in on turn 1. close enough to cancel an opponents Psy powers and cast some nasty close up powers of his own. So what are you shopping for? Karsus
Well the initial approach was: Grey Hunters + Meltagun + Wolf Standard + MotW + Rhino + Power Fist with RP that has Murderous Hurricane + Tempest's Wrath or Storm Caller. TDA looks good too but will RP + 4 WG be enough to take fire? wolf363839
My answer is BOTH. I always attach a Wolf Guard with combi-melta and power fist to every Grey Hunter Pack. One of the packs also has a Rune Priest attached so he can shoot Living Lightning out of the Rhino's hatch and give anti-psyker coverage. If you add up the points, it makes much more sense to give a Wolf Guard a power fist vs a regular GH. Grey Hunter + Power Fist = 15 + 25 = 40 Wolf Guard + Power Fist = 18 + 20 = 38 Also, the Wolf Guard gives you an additional attack and higher leadership. You won't be able to take a second special weapon, but to me you get much more than you give up. My answer is BOTH.
