ArmouredWing
I've been having as bit of a walk down memory lane of late book wise. I don't usually read stuff again after finishing a book but having found a dusty copy of Ian Watson's 'Inquistion War' in my folk's attic a couple of weeks ago I decided to get stuck into it again just to see how well it faired given it was written way back in the early 90's. I'm currently half a dozen chapters in but I've got to say it reads like something only just released bar the inclusion of Grimm the Squat and the writing itself is very rich with some really vivid descriptions. I always remember it being a good read, I had an original copy round about the time when it was first released but looking at it now it's amazing how much it set the bar for everything we've had since including the great stories like eisenhorn and ravenor to much of the horus heresy books that are being drip fed to us now. For anyone who hasn't read it at all or even recently I'd thoroughly recommend it, well the first part of the trilogy anyway. I think you'd be pleasantly surprised... daboarder
man that one really screwed with my head I think I ended up giving up on book 3 though, the end of 2 really really annoyed me, I do have to say though that the tradgedy of the ending is definately something that is being lost in the current lore of 40k and thats a shame because that is what 40k fluff should be like. AbyssKnight
I bought the reprinted omnibus version that came out not long ago. I found it VERY different from modern/recent BL fiction in flavor, and couldn't even finish the first book. I have put it down to rest a bit and plan on trying again soon (sometimes, coming back to a book makes it easier to wrap your head around it). It ws my first BL book, and for some reason I can't clearly define it felt like an infomercial. My friends finally convinced me to try the HH series, and I really loved them. I think the problem was that it suffered from "rule inclusion symptom" (some HH books have this also). I play WH40k, I know the rules and it annoys me no end when authors use them in their book. I remeber this fight between Fulgrim and some Eldars where the author writed "the Eldar craft was skimming around..." a few times. I know it's a skimmer, no need to do this. Same when character XYZ fires his plasma pistol but it "gets so hot he burned himself", etc... Items with ctrl+c ctrl+v from codex' wargear, faith powers with ctrl+c, ctrl+v from list of acts of faith. I like books about 40k world, not about 40k game. Inquisitor Fox
I liked the Inquisition War books... there were some awkward moments but as a whole I felt the story went pretty well, it also focused much more on individual characters narrative as opposed to a larger, grand scheme of things. Yes, there were a few sections I felt were kind of.. forced (the ending of the first novel part bugged me.. it felt very Deus Ex Machina) but as a whole I'm definately not dissappointed at having bought the Omnibus. I'd recommend them to anyone who is fond of Inquisition fluff :P Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/203318-once-upon-a-time/#findComment-2423967 Share on other sites

daboarder
I think my favourite part is the insane whacko emperor talking to people. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/203318-once-upon-a-time/#findComment-2424636 Share on other sites
