Finn
Hi all, I found some free time and I decided to work on my Belial's base. I wanted it to fit with the rest of my army's bases, but I also wanted this one to stand out. I decided to sculpt some glowing pattern/rune to clearly indicate, that the mini is someone more important than your usual termie. This is the result. As it's my first attempt to do OSL, I'd appreciate advice how to improve the effect. http://img175.imageshack.us/img175/6898/bases.jpg Cheers, Finn Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/203421-dark-angels-belials-base/ Share on other sites
Captin Xavier
WOW ...DUDE!! thats awsome! Really well done! I think the only possible way to make this any better is to maybe lighten up some of the "brighter" spots of the light source. Apart from that you're golden Cheers Cpt X Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/203421-dark-angels-belials-base/#findComment-2425071 Share on other sites
Sgt. Aardappel
That is one awesome base! I should make bases for my models. They're all just black. :) Great work man. Finn
Thanks for the compliments, guys :) I think that adding some brighter spots is not such a bad idea, I'll have to try it. However, I'm afraid that the light source might be not wide enough to add some "hotter" spots, as it may turn plain white. Still, it's worth taking a shot. Naturally, the light is going to reflect off Belial's leg armour a bit. Maybe it will increase the overall effect. I should make bases for my models. They're all just black. ;) I've recently noticed that a finished base adds very much to the look of the mini. Most of my minis look a bit crappy without bases done and after some work on the base, they suddenly start to look quite acceptable :P And here comes Belial himself: http://img217.imageshack.us/img217/2/belial.jpg Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/203421-dark-angels-belials-base/#findComment-2425077 Share on other sites
Finn
Ok, I've added some "hotter" spots. Before: http://img175.imageshack.us/img175/6898/bases.jpg After: http://img411.imageshack.us/img411/8632/baseimp.jpg More advice, guys? Still learning how to do OSL and support from OSL experts would be highly appreciated :P Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/203421-dark-angels-belials-base/#findComment-2425165 Share on other sites
Typical Cricket
Seems like you don't need much advice, hehe. Nice job! :P Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/203421-dark-angels-belials-base/#findComment-2425166 Share on other sites
the akratic
I really liked it at first, then you changed it by adding the hotter spots, and now i REALLY like it. Nice work Finn, keep it up. Make sure to continue the OSL on the actual model too though, otherwise it might look weird. But you probably already knew that. They're a little bland at the moment. Just a tiny bit of nigh white should do it, I think. (Might mix it with some orange/yellow.) It's looking great though. Brother Styphus
Keep the rocks as they are now. If you brighten it you might end up with rocks that seem to be making their own light. Nothing to do with the base, but what are your plans for those shoulder pads? If reversed the winged sword may be upside down, but as of now they have huge vulnerable gaps. A conundrum perhaps? Finn
What are your plans for those shoulder pads? If reversed the winged sword may be upside down, but as of now they have huge vulnerable gaps. A conundrum perhaps? Nothing, actually. I have to admit that I'm a bit worried about the durability of current solution, but my plastic glue is concrete-hard and I'm generally handling my minis very gently to avoid any damage. It should be fine. Maybe I'll reinforce the joint by some plasticard, where the shoulderpads and torso meet. Alternatively, if something bad happens, I'll file off the embossed detail, reverse the pads and add some GS/card detail.
