Space Wolves

Recommended Posts

OK, I used to play Space wolves before the new edition and the new dex. I have been getting some games in and my gamer ADD has me starting and stopping several armies all at once. Then I decided to sell off my orks for something different than the SOB army I have been playing. Space Wolves were a ton of fun back when I played them and the models are awesome. I have some cash in my paypal account from selling orks and I am looking to buy some Wolves.

So far this is what I have come up with on my shopping list

Space Wolves Battleforce

Rune Priest

Devestator Squad Box

2 Razorbacks

I figure this gives me options to run a decent Long fang pack kitted out

Couple of GH squads in rhinos(I have a couple already)

Rune Priest as my HQ

Scouts for filler

Is this a decent shopping list to start, and where to go from here. I favor squads of GH in rhinos and Fangs as long range support. Love Terminators but wionder if they are worth taking.

The golden rule is 1 GH pack per 500 points, as Grey Mage says. With that, transports, Long Fangs and HQ everything is pretty much secured. I never leave the Fang without scouts as well. The rest is up to You - getting Rhinos or drop pods, going into Swiftclaws, Skyclaws, Thunderwolves or heavy mech - as per Your gamestyle and preferences. But GH and LF remain as the core.

And always listen to Grey Mage.

Seems like a good core, with the ability to make Rhinos if you want.

I would suggest a Tactical Squad or two for the Special Weapons (Space Wolves only come with Plasma Guns) and missile launchers for Long Fangs if you want. You can spread the wolfy parts out and still make pretty cool Wolves which aren't covered in Wolf kit (which isn't good or bad, just a style)

Scouts are better than filler with the Wolves, give them a Meltagun (Tactical box again is a good source) and maybe a Power Weapon or two to deal with whatever's by the edge of the board.

I'll start off with this:

what style of army do you want? The beauty of the wolves is that you can have some very different playstyles represented by the army, which is a significant strength.

Do you want an army that plays like a pack of wolves, working together to bring down larger prey? If so, take grey hunters/Blood Claws in Rhinos, supported by wolf scouts, Long Fangs and speeders.

Do you want a force based around some heavy hitting units? If so, take a thunderwolf Lord, a squad of thunderwolf cavalry and whatever else you need to do the job.

Do you want a drop pod force? Take Grey hunters in pods with plenty of melta/plasma, back them up with some podding dreads, and chant boom repeatedly

At the end of the day, what i'm really saying is, read page 16 of the Space Wolves codex, as well as whatever else takes your fancy(thunderwolf entries, lone wolves, etc...), and build a list that reflects what you think is cool. Post the list on dakka/warseer/bolter&Chainsword (or even all three!) and see what people say to help tweak the list.

Next; look at some bitz sites to get a bucketload of missile launchers for long fangs; though some people swear by 2xlascannon, 3x missile launcher packs, i find that 5xmissiles do the job required better for cheaper.

You migh also look at some heavy tanks and speeders to divert AT firepower away from your rhinos; ac/lc preds are popular (though i would magnetise these to be edition-change proof), although vindies are very good in the firepower-distraction role - your choice depends on how much your list depends on the grey hunters getting there or not.

Scouts are hit-and-miss; some like them for BELS, but i don't rate them as reliable enough to risk spending the 100-odd points on them.

hope this helps,

The basic rule should be 1 SW box and 1 Tactical box.

You end up with 20 Space Wolves, extra special weapons, and extra missile launchers for your Long Fangs.

I like the battle force set, except if you have no intention of drop pods, your wasting money. Same with the scouts past one max squad.

If you are intent on the battle force boxes, get two battle forces, and two tactical boxes. Sell the drop pods to pick up razorbacks and one devastator box. You could easily make,

3x 10man Grey Hunter squads

1x ??man Power armor Wolf Guard

1x 10man Wolf Scouts

1x Long Fang w/3 ML and 2 LC

A bitz built rune priest in PA

A bitz built wolf lord in PA

Awesome, Thanks for all of the replies. I am not set on the BF per se just figured it would give me some initial options. The Pod is not something I am 100% sold on as I have never played the pods. I have run rhinos full of GH squads though and I know I like that. Thunderlord and cav look great but I am more of a GH in rhino guy so that will be my focus with the army.

As for the Avatar guess I do need to change that but I also am building a TSons list. what can I say I like them both.
