GlauG
EDIT: Okay, since this has expanded beyond the original Dread so much, I'm repurposing it as a blog. Makes sense... So, I've been busy with uni, and hurt my wrists, so I've not done any mini painting literally all year, but now my exams are over and my wrists are a bit better, so I thought I'd give myself a challenge; paint a new 40k army before I hopefully leave for Japan at the end of the summer. I started on GW stuff with "Angels of Death" back in the mid-90's, and usually play Dark Angels, but I've got an old Blood Angels army in need of renovating, so I thought I'd resurrect them with the new codex. Then I read about Furioso Dreadnought Librarians, and decided they'd be a great piece to model... this is the result. http://img683.imageshack.us/img683/1368/p1000544np.th.jpg http://img94.imageshack.us/img94/3070/p1000549nn.th.jpg For what it's worth, this is my first real attempt at NMM and object-source lighting. I flirted with both for my GD entry last year, but totally sucked at them both. This is still a WIP, but I'm much happier with it so far. My main problem is that the sword looks too... "busy" now. Don't really want to repaint it, though. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/203623-scratchbuild-heavy-blood-angels-army-blog/ Share on other sites
Brother Styphus
Very cool-tastic. What were you trying to do with the sword arm? It appears as if the neophytes got into the mechanicum reliquary with a box of crayons. Besides smoothing-out the freehand on the legs, the sword is the only thing holding this model back from utter greatness. GlauG
Yeah, the sword was originally meant to be done like the NMM on the 'Eavy Metal team's Sanguinor's sword, with purple lightening for the "Force Weapon" look, IMO it looked alright in the first pic. I'm unimpressed with how I overdid the whole thing, sadly. I might just start over with that really... Chaplain Hiltraud
Very nice concept there, I'm liking the look of this model although I have a few tips as well...For starters, where is the storm bolter? Second, I love the yellow orange highlights on the armour, gives the model a "I'm brewing up a warp storm to unleash of you" look, (deffo using that idea) but maybe you could think about refining the technique a bit, ie, on the feet it needs to be neater and also in the joins and on the exhauts and I'd review the inserts too...and definitely fix up the sword, when I first tried lightning it came out similar but try starting with the main lightning cracks, add a few more tinner ones (but not to many) and highlight them from there... Personally I start from the bottom up ie thicker at the base going to thinner at the tip but this was all I could find at this point in time... Yours in Honour and Faith Chaplain Hitraud EDIT: I didn't look at the first pic properly, the lightning there looks great definately go back to that and highlight up the purple, then I reckon you'll be on the money! GlauG
Very nice concept there, I'm liking the look of this model although I have a few tips as well...For starters, where is the storm bolter? ...Whoops! I knew I was forgetting something. >_< Argh... Not sure where to attach that now, actually. It'll be a pain to stick on the arm at this point... Thanks a lot. Yeah, it's a WIP at the moment, very much so... I only posted it instead of working on it more as I was starting to get so tired I was worried I'd mess up. Today I'll probably try and tidy up the feet more in particular. What exactly do you mean by the "Inserts" though, what part of the model? Personally I start from the bottom up ie thicker at the base going to thinner at the tip but this was all I could find at this point in time... For your inspiration (pic) Or something like that... Yours in Honour and Faith Chaplain Hitraud EDIT: I didn't look at the first pic properly, the lightning there looks great definately go back to that and highlight up the purple, then I reckon you'll be on the money! Yeah, the "Space Hulk" method of doing Power Weapons is now my preferred one... I originally wanted to try something different, as my Dark Angels Deathwing Terminators all have their swords done in those colours... I'm kinda annoyed that I ruined what was a good job originally, so I might go for something very different, like a dark purple base and then orange/yellow crackle in that style. I don't have any pics of those, but this is how I used to do power weapons et al; http://img194.imageshack.us/img194/5769/1021814.jpg http://img269.imageshack.us/img269/910/1021756long.jpg They're actually UV reactive, too... I didn't want to "cheat" with this guy though, no Alclad Chrome, no metal buffing powder, etc... Me Grimlock say Librarian looks good. Haha, I'd totally missed him when I took the photo... It took me a while to work out exactly what you were on about. ;) please correct me if I'm wrong, but the glowing hand, isn't that the Transparent "God Finger" hand from the God Gundam mobile fighter model? "This hand of mine glows with an awesome power...it tells me to defeat you!"Or something along those lines. Nice Libby Dread you got there, buddy. Very action-oriented. Yup, it's one of the "God Finger" hands. I had an idea when I went and looked at the Ven Dread kit that a Furioso Librarian with one of my outstretched 1/100 Gundam hands would be cool for a "casting" pose, and I liked the way the God's fingers were. What Isn't immediately obvious from the photo is that I've added 4 points of articulation to each shoulder! The arms move up and down, back and forward, and rotate at 2 places... Chaplain Hiltraud
I'm kinda annoyed that I ruined what was a good job originally, so I might go for something very different, like a dark purple base and then orange/yellow crackle in that style. I don't have any pics of those, I think that idea of the purple base working up to the orange/yellow crackle will look excellent and definately fit in with the overall feel of the model! I'll be very interested to see more pics of your work! Also might I add that those Grey Knights look awesome! What exactly do you mean by the "Inserts" though, what part of the model? I didn't know what else to call them, but I was talking about the armour with the writing and scrolls on either side of the head? If that makes sense? I thought it needed to be done differently like at first I thought it looked out of place and untidy but the more I look at your pic the more I like it! So forget I mentioned it! I'm loving it... Also, about the storm bolter, I've been racking my brain with ideas on where to put it (I was even thinking of some crazy whacked out overthetop mechanical arm attached to the back coming over the top of the dread with the storm bolter attached to the end of it but yeah way to iron warriors. And crazy. Anyways) honestly the best I could think of was attaching it to the outside of the force weapon? just for some variety but I think it's best for you to decide on this... I was messing around with mirosoft paint and this is what I got, I learnt that I'm a much better painter than I am at drawing in paint!! http://img15.imageshack.us/img15/5162/stormbolteridea.jpg Hahaha Anyways, not to sure at how much room you have to work with but there's my idea! Oh and the image is meant to be reversed ie, the storm bloter is on the outside of the force weapon not the inside... GlauG
Thanks a lot for the suggestions Chaplain Hiltraud. ;) I might just try and stick it under the fist normally, I figure it's not toooo hard to do at this stage. I managed to strip the sword back to the blue layer without too much damage, I'm not sure if I'll leave it like that or try and add "lightening" again or not. http://img708.imageshack.us/img708/5734/p10005549733322.jpg The downside is, I think I overdid the OSL and screwed up the whole mini. Curses. I might leave it for now, try and work on NMM with my Sanquinary Guard, and get back to it later... KaosRaptor
I wouldn't say you ruined it, it's still a great mini. You just need to remove some of the extra lighting, like around the toes and opposite shoulder. I'm by no means an expert on this sort of thing, but I'd say limit the lighting to areas close to the source. Probably keep it limited to the hand, shoulder, faceplate and closest hip/leg. Still fantastic work, can't wait to see more from you. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/203623-scratchbuild-heavy-blood-angels-army-blog/#findComment-2428836 Share on other sites
GlauG
Thanks KaosRaptor. I'm tempted to strip back some of the glow like I did the sword, but I'm waiting to see if I get any feedback from another board first, I had some very helpful advice from a few people which I'd like to follow up on. Hopefully this evening I'll get started on my Sanguinary Guard! GlauG
Okay, so I stripped back a little of the light, and took some photos from other angles so you can get a better look. I just need to sit down and work on the NMM, as well as the parts that aren't being glared upon by the hand. http://img35.imageshack.us/img35/6576/p10005565210628.jpg http://img15.imageshack.us/img15/51/p10005575220443.jpg http://img822.imageshack.us/img822/4493/p10005585230955.jpg http://img813.imageshack.us/img813/3285/p10005595241081.jpg However, more importantly, my fledgling Blood Angels had a great day for their first game; allied with some Guard against Imperial Fists and a friend's counts-as-Mechanicus Space Marines, and even better, my Furioso Libby basically destroyed 3 times his own points value. 1 Dread, 2 Venerable Dreads, and one Ironclad all fell before him, exploded by the God Finger. :P Unfortunately he was felled by Pedro Kantor while squishing him in return. At any rate, I realised that the only thing better than one cool model is two of them, so I took the spare parts from the Ven. Dread kit and began to assemble his brother! http://img34.imageshack.us/img34/1466/p10005605182423.jpg http://img24.imageshack.us/img24/2760/p10005615168373.jpg http://img29.imageshack.us/img29/6510/p10005625154632.jpg http://img22.imageshack.us/img22/4619/p10005655140093.jpg http://img24.imageshack.us/img24/9409/p10005645130090.jpg Aside from the Ven Dread bits, he's made up from a Sanguinary Guard head, random Marine tank crew torso, a Rhino Cupola, misc bits from the Imperial Sector building pack, the H/K missile launcher from the Ironclad Dread, and lots of styrene sheet, tube, metal wire, and WAVE/Kotobukiya option parts. I'm surprised at how fast he's come along (I only started on Thursday night), but basically I only have to attach the power plant (the grey piece lying separate) and some spare arms I'll be modding, as well as some cables. Not sure about what to do with the arms yet, maybe this time paint him using a glowing sword or something. And might not use a Gundam hand this time... GlauG
Okay, found an alternative hand for the first Dread, please try and ignore the colour as best you can and tell me if the shape is any better. ;) Besides that, did some work on the scratchbuilt one, added piston detail and cables to the legs, basically finished up the torso, just need to build the arms and I'm done! http://img23.imageshack.us/img23/7396/p10005660526758.jpg http://img23.imageshack.us/img23/7775/p10005670538023.jpg http://img824.imageshack.us/img824/3863/p10005680551136.jpg http://img821.imageshack.us/img821/9196/p10005690566483.jpg Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/203623-scratchbuild-heavy-blood-angels-army-blog/#findComment-2432932 Share on other sites
GlauG
Well, I finally got round to doing the arms, was distracted by Terminator Librarians and someone giving me something like £200 of Grey Knights and other assorted minis. They're a bit longer than I'd have liked, but it gives him this whole Big-O feel, which looks good next to Brother-Librarian God Gundam in my mind. :D I've since stuck the winged blooddrop shoulder pad bits from the Death Company sprue on his forearms. http://img16.imageshack.us/img16/6104/p10005742588600.jpg http://img23.imageshack.us/img23/4654/p10005752600886.jpg http://img16.imageshack.us/img16/2044/p10005762615086.jpg Just need to make the staff and he's good to paint. :wallbash: Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/203623-scratchbuild-heavy-blood-angels-army-blog/#findComment-2438437 Share on other sites
GlauG
Okay, this has now turned into a general update thread for my BA collection, who I'm experimenting with army builds for... http://img121.imageshack.us/img121/8662/p10006078746498.jpg That's everyone so far. The astute among you will notice that only the Sanguinary Priest and one of the Dreads are even near finished... http://img686.imageshack.us/img686/6960/p10006088755191.jpg Close up on the two Librarian Dreads. The Force Staff is a WIP. http://img690.imageshack.us/img690/8422/p10006098767245.jpg http://img686.imageshack.us/img686/8594/p10006108781699.jpg Both Dante and Lemartes have had their metal jump packs replaced with plastic ones... I also like Dante having the Sanguinary Guard one, as they share so much visually. I'm experimenting with NMM on the Sang Guard, but it's slow and painful going... http://img121.imageshack.us/img121/2204/p10006138795450.jpg Assault Squad + Sanguinary Priest. http://img9.imageshack.us/img9/8870/p10006148804672.jpg Last but not least, a 2E Librarian Termie with the arms from the current model... long story short, a friend had both left over after a conversion, and since I'd severed the left arm for him, he offered it to me. My plans are another Furioso Librarian (as one rocks, two are scary, and three are the best kind of overkill), as well as another two or three or four Dreadnoughts to choose from... Also, some Scouts, Death company and Assault Marines on foot, Land Raiders, and a Stormraven are planned before I have to move to Japan again... GlauG
Okay, I couldn't resist, I let everything else drop to the wayside while I started the Stormraven. :tu: http://img9.imageshack.us/img9/6610/p10006158836518.jpg http://img690.imageshack.us/img690/299/p10006168846365.jpg The Stormraven's based on the now-popular "Horn Pattern" custom, but I'll be doing a lot of things in my own way, particularly the rear doors/grapples. I tried a game with a very silly 1500pt list involving 3 Furioso Libby Dreads, A Stormraven, 2 regular Dreads for fire support, Scouts, Death Company, led by Mephiston! They destroyed my friend's similarly experimental 9 Landspeeder Vulkan list, which was amusing. An incentive to actually model up more Dreads, at any rate. GlauG
Just because no-one else is interested, doesn't mean I won't keep updating! :D Stormraven takes shape: http://img94.imageshack.us/img94/7259/p10006180738555.jpg And with weapons: http://img683.imageshack.us/img683/1835/p10006210771085.jpg And about 80% done: http://img534.imageshack.us/img534/156/p10006240780199.jpg You can see where it's differing from the "Horn" Pattern one, I didn't feel a need to extend the engine covers for one thing, I prefer the smaller fins at the front, and I'm mounting the weapons in totally different places... The Assault Cannon is magnetised btw, so if I feel a need for Twin Lascannons or whatever I can switch them out, while the HB is the standard Marine Turret size, coming from a Planetstrike gun base, with Immolator Heavy Bolters and some plasticard/rod and can also be switched out for whatever. GlauG
So, I get the second most important set of university results I'll ever get sometime later today, which meant I couldn't sleep last night. But, on the upside, this means I got some modelling time in; http://img820.imageshack.us/img820/9800/p10006310550877.jpg Someone down my local GW shop gave me a land raider minus sponsons, weapons and top hull plate in exchange for a pint. :) One order of bitz and a rummage through my box later, and my BA Godhammer was born. Now I just need to make my two Crusader/Redeemers... Stormraven got a lot of love, too; http://img820.imageshack.us/img820/1986/p10006300536665.jpg These are the only doors which don't open. I just honestly couldn't be bothered to cut the hole in the hull, add hinges, magnetise it to keep shut, etc etc... Now, here's the fun part; the Magna-clamps. http://img820.imageshack.us/img820/4357/p10006370521950.jpg http://img820.imageshack.us/img820/9126/p10006330511577.jpg http://img824.imageshack.us/img824/4817/p10006340303145.jpg And of course, me being me, they actually ARE magnetic. As are my Dreads. http://img25.imageshack.us/img25/8031/p10006409638367.jpg More impressive when you realise he has lead-based pewter legs from my old 1990's metal Dreadnought... http://img25.imageshack.us/img25/2087/p10006419658801.jpg http://img25.imageshack.us/img25/9868/p10006399627829.jpg http://img638.imageshack.us/img638/1156/p10006389601949.jpg I just need to get off my butt and blend the hatches into the rear of the hull more when they're "down", and the assembly is totally finished! Unless you count all the weapon options. Which I plan on now making, after realising that mech armies laugh at Heavy Bolter/Assault Cannon combos. GlauG
Okay, I've been busy with things that aren't modelling today (since it's double XP weekend on War For Cybertron. >_> ) but I did take some time out to build my two Crusader/Redeemers. There are magnets behind the front tracks, which let the frag launchers pop off so I can swap out the sponsons for Godhammer canons if I feel like it... The sponsons are also magnetised so I can switch them out with the doors... I like the look better with the sponsons to the rear, but Flamestorm cannons and Hurrican Bolters are both much better off with the extra inch and a half or whatever of range. :( So this way I can play with them forward and keep them at the rear for Godhammer mode or display. :P Similarly the hatches up top are magnetised to allow for swapping of storm bolters, heavy flamers, etc etc. http://img38.imageshack.us/img38/6172/p10006513167660.jpg Nothing new to the Stormraven, but I took a few pics in strong daylight to help me with reference for NMM on the engines and stuff later, which was my partner's idea. :D http://img38.imageshack.us/img38/3973/p10006463195577.jpg Hopefully I'll spray the basecoat on the tanks and the Stormie tomorrow. GlauG
Okay, I've spent a few hours airbrushing all this crap thanks to chunky bits in my Mechrite red gumming up the works of my airbrush, but I wanted to post it before grabbing sleep. This is practically an entire army in and of itself... If only the JP Marines didn't have the packs, it'd probably be legal at around what, 2000? http://img820.imageshack.us/img820/8805/p10006522483464.jpg Furioso Libby gets some love too, finally. He's being sprayed blue as that's the base coat for my Librarian Dreads. http://img64.imageshack.us/img64/5581/p10006532498777.jpg And Grandpa Libby gets a base. :D Not finished painting him yet, but I feel much better about the model now. Every base in my army will be modelled after this one. http://img824.imageshack.us/img824/1623/p10006542511445.jpg Mephiston, TTAC Dread, ye olde metal BA Dread, Land Raider #1. http://img824.imageshack.us/img824/1231/p10006552522936.jpg Stormraven (which I love even more now it's red), LR 2. http://img824.imageshack.us/img824/4864/p10006562536824.jpg LR3, plus kibble. http://img820.imageshack.us/img820/4616/p10006572548311.jpg A lesson not to take a photo with a black background, my camera hates it. 10 JP Assault Marines, 10 without. http://img820.imageshack.us/img820/373/p10006592560748.jpg Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/203623-scratchbuild-heavy-blood-angels-army-blog/#findComment-2454672 Share on other sites
nurglez
Am really liking your libby dread's, though I'm a dread head For the second one though, feel the rune staff is missing something, seems a bit skinny compared to the dread, like he would break it rather easily by mistake :D Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/203623-scratchbuild-heavy-blood-angels-army-blog/#findComment-2454684 Share on other sites
GlauG
Thanks a lot. :) I kind of agree about the staff, I wanted to have some wire or something run around it for that swirly pattern Force Weapons usually have, but at the end of the day it wasn't working out (don't have a fine enough gauge of wire) so I dropped the idea. And if you're a Dread head, watch this space... I have about 11 I plan on doing eventually for my BA. :P Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/203623-scratchbuild-heavy-blood-angels-army-blog/#findComment-2454913 Share on other sites
