Good Assault list to compliment IG?

Fire Wolf

Recommended Posts

Greetings Wolf-Brothers,

I was looking for a bit of advice. This Saturday my IG friend and I will be squaring off against a pair of opponents, I suspect one will be some form of vile Elfdar (normal or Dark) and the other will be Chaos or those obnoxious greenskins.

Typically my friend will be DH /w IG allies or IG w/ DH allies. In either case, typically having a unit of GKs to act as a Vanguard for his guardsmen and naturally, I'm looking to compliment his firepower for close in assault. For some reason, I'm not as much of a fan of fast attack as I should be, so my list that I'm pondering looks like this: We'll be playing either 3000 or 4000 point game (with each player having 50% of the points).

Wolf Lord /w Runic Armour, Plasma Pistol, FB, wolf tail talisman

Rune Priest (for psyker nullification)

Bjorn /w Plasma Cannon

2x Dreadnought /w TWAC & DCCW

10x Wolf Guard in PA /w 8x PW, 2x PF, 2x Combi-Melta, 8x Bolt Pistol OR Storm Bolters in Land Raider Redeemer /w the Wolf Lord

10x Grey Hunters /w Plasma Pistol, PW, 2x Melta in Rhino

9x Grey Hunters /w Plasma Pistol, PW, Flamer in Rhino /w Rune Priest

My thought was a Phalanx with the Land Raider and Dreadnoughts shielding the Rhinos and if all goes according to plan, tying up as much as I can with the Wolf Guard Assault and Dreadnoughts while the Rhinos get into position and unload.

Any thoughts, suggestions or otherwise?

otherwise .

If one list shoty then you do not try to make the other list an assault list in team games. because if your opponents do 2xshoty or 2x assaulty they will break your armies one after another.

Go with a razorbacks build . leave the scoring to the IG list and take take 3-4 GH units with 2 plasma each . take two RP to stop psychic powers[chaos and eldar] and punish low I[orks/pms] and deep strike/jump troops. take 3 units of LF with 3xRL2xlascanon . take the obligatory mystic +inq and hide them in a rhino/razorback and form a strong fire base with the LF and the IG army. IF there are enough points[and considering your taking 2x2k points it should] try to take some WG body bags for the LF and a termi with cyclons [am not sure but I think 2 wont fit in].

If you get turn one you will light up their army with tons of fire power. at 4k both SW and IG have an ungodly amount of high str low ap attacks .

Do You have any scouts? I'd advise You to take them. Also, check with the other player if and which assassins he is taking. Bear in mind that Eldar most probably will take Runes of Warding with their Farseer and hang back (that's roll 3 dices for psychic powers and 12+ causes perils). If You or other player can - You should dispose of that Farseer or he will shut down psychic for You. Vindicare Assassin might be good at this. At the same time You both will be shutting down psychic powers for them - Inquisitor Lord with his hood on the whole table, Your RPs with staffs on 4+.

This is generally true, although I would say that a balanced SW list (lots of Grey Hunters, who can perform in both assault and shooting) can work pretty well alongside shooty armies like Guard, at least when fighting double assault forces. The trick, I've found, is to entrench alongside (and just behind) the Guardsmen, and then provide the counter-assault when the close-combat forces drop on the Guardsmen. Guardsmen are going to get wiped out in assault by virtually any army, but if you position your forces right, you can be there to catch their attackers flat-footed. You should definitely focus on shooting until the enemy reaches you, however.

Addendum: I'd say that while the Vindicare Assassin is cool, he's probably not as effective for actually assassinating things as the Callidus or Eversor Assassins, who will show up and absolutely brutalize any single target (the Vindicare will kill, at most, 6-7 models over the course of the game. The Eversor can do that in a single turn, and then has a fair chance to do it again afterwards. The Callidus assassin is probably just as good at killing characters if not better than the Vindicare, and has the added bonus of being excellent against most other targets, too). Wolf Scouts with Power Weapons, a Meltagun, and a PW or PF Wolf Guard with a Combi-Melta also make very effective (and cost-effective) assassins and armor hunters thanks to OBEL.

About the only time I would take a Vindicare these days is if I was playing against Blood Angels and they didn't have many Sanguinary Priests...since you can pop them at a distance and get rid of their FNP and FC bubble quite easily.
