Astronomican

I was always under the impression that the Astronomican didn't need the Emperor to be physically present in order to work prior to the Heresy. It was like a lightswitch; the Emperor simply left the lights on when he left the house.

I got the impression that now the Golden Throne is used to keep the Emperor "alive", even though that was not it's intended purpose (or main one at least) - but it was the only machine capable of doing this after the Emperor's confrontation with Horus. Over such a long time, where the Imperium has devolved into a place of mystical ritual and superstition and distrust of technology and innovation, it has become widely believed and accepted that it is the Emperor himself within the Golden Throne that is projecting the Astronomican, even though that may well not be the case technically. In other words the Emperor has nothing to do with it, it is all the machine itself, however it is such ingrained belief that it is created by the Emperor himself, that noone even thinks about considering to contemplate risking suggesting such a thing, let alone actually removing the Emperor from the machine.

The machine is powered by the sacrifices of hundreds->thousands of psykers... dying basically. They are slowly killing themselves to power it.

That is how it works.

The confusion is that after the heresy the Golden throne kept the emperor alive... also using dying psykers. So now you have psykers being given to the emperor and the astronomicon to keep him alive and power the astronomicon. Somewhere people combined the two into psykers were given to the emperor to power the astronomicon.

I believe even the authors of the Horus Heresy books have got confused. Before the Emperors palace was based in Europe with the Golden Throne supposedly centred on GW HQ in Nottingham and the Forbidden Fortress is based the Astronomican centred in the Himalayas. But the novels are now saying that the palace is centred around the greatest mountain range on earth ie the Himalayas meaning that geographically the Imperial Palce and Forpidden Fortress are in the same area

It was like that before. I can't for the life of me remember where, but I'm sure I saw that fluff somewhere else before the Horus Heresy novels came out.

It's in the newest Rulebook, under the picture of the starmap. They show Terra with the Forbidden Stuff and Astroglide in separate locations.
