The Legion of Doom

Burningblood

Recommended Posts

Has anyone else been dying to know how a massive DC army works in practice? Well I have.

I've finally got them. Not all of them are painted (not even a quarter) but I have 25 Death company marines in jump packs, Lemartes, and Astorath (painted beautifully by Hialmar). Hialmar and I are playing a game today that will be epically brutal, and I am bringing the camera.

My List:

HQ: Astorath-220

Reclusiarch- JP -155

Elites: Sanguinary Priest- jp, hf-90

Furioso Dreadnought- Frag cannon, blood fist, heavy flamer, drop pod with deathwind launcher-190

Furioso Dreadnought- Frag cannon, blood fist, heavy flamer, drop pod- 170

Troops:

Death Company: x26 DC with jump packs, x2 TH, x5 PW, x3IP, PP, x2PF, Lemartes- 1270

Dc Dread: Blood Tallons, heavy flamer, Drop pod with DW launcher- 190

DC Dread: Blood Tallons, Heavy Flamer, Drop pod- 170

Total 2490

:: cackles maniacly::

Everything deepstrikes. EVERYTHING! muawhaha.

Going to be a short, brutal game. Either I'll get hosed or he will.

I will try to post pics and a battle report as soon as I get home today.

Ok a swift battle report:

My opponent (Hiamlar) used his template spamming Codex marines- Including Pedro Cantor- so while I kept everything in reserve, I only deepstruck the dreadnoughts, which with two exceptions proved useful.

Turn One: I just wasted a turn for him by not having anything on the table. His fire lines at 2500 points are close to guardesqe. I did not want to get shot by him.

Turn two: two of my dreads come in and manage to wreck one of his vindicators. Nothing else manages to come in that turn. SUCK!

Turn three: The first aforementioned dreads disabled or destroyed, one of my dreads come in and his termies deepstrike in. The terminators deepstrike on my edge of the board and some of them die. He now has 8 terminators instead of ten, which is a plus for me, but they completely destroy the dread that dropped next to them without having to charge him. CRAP.

Turn 4: A baal predator is all that comes in for me! Oh and my GIANT DEATH COMPANY SQUAD. The DC squad walks on the table edge with their full movement and charges the terminators. Even though only twelve of them actually get in base to base I do enough wounds that he looses all but one on I5. Then on I1, my thunderhamerers do 5 wounds and he only manages to squish one death company psycho.

Turn 5: PEDRO CANTOR FOR THE WIN- he vaporises 10 DC marines with a direct hit on an orbital bombardment. My other baal comes in, and so does my landspeeder, both of which epically fail to do ANYTHING. My DC manage to double charge a Dreadnought and Landspeeder and smoke them both, then run behind a wall towards the nearest enemy squad, a tac squad that my opponent was baiting them with.

Turn 6: My last DC dread finally comes in. It hides. My DC+Astorath+Lemartes make short work of his tac squad but don't manage to kill the rhino on the double charge???? (serriously, baaaaaaaad rolling) His rhino tank shocks my DC, but other than that the game ends.

Hialmar won by 3 kill points, but this is the first time he hasn't outright (or nearly so) tabled me. I still had 12 DC and Astorath, and Lemartes, and a DC dread, so Really the game wasn't over yet, but it did end on turn six.

NEXT TIME HIALMAR! NEXT TIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIME!

-Oh and my camera's battery died when I tried to get a picture of the charge on those Terminators. I only got a couple of pics but I'll post them soon.

As fun and maniacal as it sounds, unless your hitting multiple units on the assault, you'll find that having more than 10 on the assault is wasted. If there is a next time, divided them into 3 groups since Astorath is in there. I'd give Astorath & the Reclusiarch each 10 and then Lemartes the last 6 so he can go berserk sooner. Or save some points with 1 of each weapon per group, and maybe add some more maniac-power. ; )

Regardless, sounded like a good time. I have to get myself 30 DC ASAP myself.

Well I substituted some but yeah I've got 20 DC models straight up.

I've made a list keeping your advice in mind- its more mechanized though. I'm going to be getting some Legion of the Damned models to sub as a DC squad with Bolters- and the Legion Sergent looks like a great reclusiarch, so I've finally been convinced to have some groundpounding Death Company- I will roll them up in a LRC or Rhino because bigg squads are better :)

It was a fun and bloody game and I am going to have to remember my camera for next time at least as a back-up so we can get the pics up here. Burningblood's Death Company of Doom are pretty scary and the bigest problem he had this past game was on no turn did he get more than a two units on the board from reserve. It allowed me to destroy the things I absolutely had to in detail as they came on without having to face the might of his entire force. This one was fast and bloody.

For me the higkights were the orbital bombardment hitting dead on target and vaporizing the 10 DC and I alos enjoyed the Death Company trooper with the PF failing to hit the Rhino on Death or Glory and getting squished in the treads. The Drop-podding Dreads were pretty funas they caused some havoc before dying, well all except the one that hid behind the rocks. Not as much fun as Astorath face planting into a big rock on Turn 2 when he deepstruck in like last time, but it was an enjoyable game.

Our games are for the most part fairly close and always a lot of fun. One of these days he is going to beat me it is only a matter of time. We actually had a new player looking over things this past week and he will hopefully be playing against Burningblood this week while I sit by, give advice and do color commentary.

Just a thought.

Doesn't orbital bombardment go off on the first turn only?

Not sure as I don't have a Chapter Master but I think there was some discussion about this...

My understanding is you get a single orbital bombardment shot that can be used once per game instead of your normal shooting. I cant recall there being any turn restrictions. I dont have my vanilla codex to hand tho so I cant verify that.

There is no turn restriction on when orbital bombardment occurs. You may only use it once, it scatters the full 2d6 if it does scatter and the Chapter Master calling it down, be it Calgar, Pedro or any other Chapter Master may not move, shoot or assault that turn as it replaces his shooting. He also must be on the board to call it in so if he is in reserve he cannot do so although he may do so if he is in a vehicle. No line of sight is needed at all so anyplace on the board is a fair target, just be cautious with that scatter.

Tried a semi-rage list yesterday (1250p, 10DC + DC Dread in a Stormraven). The DC took out one squad of Genestealers, a Hive Tyrant with two guards and 10 Hormagaunts despite getting charged by a unit of 30 of them, all in CC. The DC Dread took out one unit of Genestealers and a unit of shooty Tyranid Warriors.

Funky stuff.
