Idea for a different take on sanguinary priests for my DIY

So I've got an idea for a new twist on the sanguinary priesthood for my DIY BA Successor(still working on a name). Basically the idea is this- the chapter's sanguinary priesthood has been entrusted with the sacred duty of being the bearers of the Death Shroud of Sanguinis. Instead of keeping it in the monastery, their Sanguinary high priest(counts as Corbulo) bears it as a banner into battle. In keeping with the tradition the rest of the chapter's priesthood turn the death shrouds of particularly Heroic battle brothers into banners that they bear into battle. These basically take the place of the grail in their wargear.

Thoughts?

Yes, in the older (2nd edition) fluff, the Blood Angels had a group of officers called Custodians. Their duty was to take care of the Chapter's holy relics. The most senior of these Custodians was Veteran Sergeant Cleutin, who was entrusted with the Shroud of Sanguinius.

That bit of background material hasn't been included in the other editions, though we don't know if it has been written out by omission or if GW has just neglected it.

Practically speaking, there is no reason you can't go forward with your plan. Whether you consider them Custodians or Sanguinary Priests is totally up to you.

isn't that brother cleutin's job?

I miss this guy. My very first conversion was a Brother Cleutin. I used the box off the old Rhino kit and some cloth with some 'blood' stains on it in the open hand of a marine. I was pretty proud of the conversion.

post up a pic then!

Didnt Cleutin see Dante through scout squad also ?

It's important to remember the context of the statement. The context is is that Cleutin is very old and that some believe that he was once Dante's Scout Sergeant. The statement has the quality of rumor, liking saying that a baseball player is so old that he learned from Babe Ruth, or that an author is so old that he taught Shakespeare. It has little or no validity and the description of Dante being the oldest member of the Chapter has been repeated too many times for any credence to be given to the speculation about Cleutin's age.

To answer the question at hand:

Well, I may drop the shroud idea. Any suggestions on how to make the banner concept work w/o it?

Convert the Sanguinary Priest models to be carrying banners instead of grails? You might even retain the grails on belts and such just to satisfy opponents, if you want. Alternately, you might have grail designs upon the banners.
