Black Paw WL
Are space marines better at being a shooting army or close combat army? Lets leave the drop pod termi list out of this for a minute. wiplash
if you want a shooty army you need Logan Grimnar so you can take WG as troops tbh if you want a shooty army use a marine army that can take more heavy/special weapons in a troops choice wolf guard special weapons are good but they are only combi-weapons and they are expensive - and the points are only really worth taking if they assault :P So basically if you want a shooty space marine army the Codex Space Marines are probably your best bet. Then you can take heavier troops and the conversion beamer for your techmarines :D Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/203913-space-wolves-a-shooty-army/#findComment-2431160 Share on other sites
Requiem of the Wolf
You can manage to make it a shooting based army without too much trouble. I tend to go heavy shooting myself..But don't ignore the combat. Wildfire
Space Wolves are a close-range shooty army. Much like Sisters, but they can take an assualt far better. Blarmb
I almost always go shooting heavy in my lists. Our assault elements are effective but not terribly efficient in a lot of games. "Claw" units are all spastic idiots that need expensive babysitters. Wolf Guard are too expensive as a dedicated assault element. TWC are nice and fairly costed, but they require a fairly decent investment to configure properly. Lone Wolves are wonderful but slow. Wolf Scouts are great at getting at the squishes at the rear but are overall narrow as an assault unit. It doesn't help that so much of this shares the elites slot. In contrast Grey Hunters work excellently out of the box as mid-short range firepower. They can take a charge far better than the standard SM equivalent and are agreeably not as confused in their role. Standard Tacticals get a heavy and special, meaning you either have a bunch of your bolters stuck out of range while they hang back with the CS'd heavy or a heavy that sees less the optimal use as it tags along with a full squad. Grey Hunters either get two specials or one special and a Pack leader with a combi-special, everything meshes well and you're not leaving any models as the odd man out. In this configuration everyone fits nicely in a Razorback which brings it's own heavy weapon that isn't tied to the same target as bolters. Long Fangs have an excellent price per shot for all their weapons, especially missile launchers. Rune Priests have solid shooting powers all around, with Living Lightning at long range. Jaws and Hurricane closer in. Hurricane is nice for somebody who wants to shoot because of the ability to slow down key units. Tempests Wrath can fill a somewhat similar role by scaring and maybe damaging the enemies fastest attackers. Our best shooting tools work out of the box and without overly large point investments. They don't need special treatment, they're simple to use and are flexible. Decoy
I've laid low countless other "shooting" armies with my "LASCANNON THUNDERHAMMER OF WOLFITTY DOOM!" list. It involves 9 Lasplas Razors, a Godhammer, and 15 Long Fangs Lascannons. Hunters and Thunderwolves for the mid-close range. No other "Mech" list has lived more than a turn. I've been thinking of adding in a few Land Speeders, but... Meh. The jury is still out on 'em for me. Wolf Lord Durgann
First, what is the point list your aiming for? I tend to find when I build armies around a certain point list I can build it better than if it is a progressively growing list. Because in the growing list you might want the TWC instead of the Sky Claws.. etc.. Shooty Wolfs in theory are amazing. They are best against armies that start on the board though. A white scars army would most likely toast a SWSA pretty easily. The_Betrayed_Spacewolf
only if the wolves deployed terribly like castling in a corner. when deployed right it should take at least 2 turns for any outflanker to get to you Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/203913-space-wolves-a-shooty-army/#findComment-2431547 Share on other sites

I am curious and am interested in doing something shooty as well. I am looking for a breakdown of units and their roles, what you take etc. Nothing fancy. Thanks! Spacefrisian
As for shooting power i think we fall in the same category as Sisters of Battle. We shine at mid range with a much higher counter abilitie than the sisters. Warhead01
I am working on a shooty list qt the moment wit 3 long fang packs and 9 land speeders. The idea being that the enemy will be good and soft when the close support guys get stuck in with any luck I am hoping for a 3 to 1 in hand to hand. This I am seeing as a bit unrealistic under 2000 points but I think it will be adjustable using the same concept for smaller games. But that still makes me worried about guard..
