Converted Jump Chaplain

Recommended Posts

First let me say that I know that a direct flash is one of the worst ways to photograph a mini, but I didn't want to go to alot of trouble on a WIP. Also, I am already planning on adding more accessories like purity seals and pouches with a small crux terminus hanging from it. My skill level, affordable paints, and eyesight will never allow me to have a Golden Daemon entry, much less a winner, so things like the stylized highlighting that you often see on power armor is out for me. Drybrushing the prominent edges is what works best for me. Other than that, C&C is very welcome.

He is converted from a bunch of different parts, none of which are from any chaplain model. I believe the head is Chaos, but I thought that it looked skull-like and really love the mouthpiece/grill. And, yes I know that the jump pack is supposed to have wings on it. I like the look of the single large thruster, but don't think I want to add the wings...which I don't have anyway.

I can see that the jump pack looks "dusty" in the pic, but it is only drybrushed and washed. Any suggestions on how to improve the look are appreciated. The blue shoulderpad looks really splotchy in the picture...mostly due to the brightness of the flash I assume.

I've picked up alot of great tips just reading in this forum, so I've used things like progressive highlights in areas like the ornate shoulderpad, his head, and the head of the crozius. My chapter colors are Blue and Bronze, btw. For the bronze, I use an Antique Copper base and highlight with Gold and Gold/Silver mix.

I am sure that most people like their Space Marines and specifically their Chaplains to be very decorative and ornate. My fluff depicts my chapter, The Holy Ghosts, as a very devout and pious chapter more akin to austere monks than the more ostentatious Ultramarines are, for example. Most of my veterans, such as the Sternguard I am working on at the moment, use the Dark Angels robed bodies and are low on bling beyond purity seals and insignia.

Good looking kit bashing man. At first glance he looks kind of chaotic, because of the runes on the tabard and the red knee pad, but the other imperial bits kind of balance him out.

The paint looks the way it does because your primer went on kind of dusty. I do it to my guys all the time and it really hinders painting at later stages. dry brushing will make it worse and you may want to consider stripping the primer off your other WIP's before you get too far painting him.

I find the primer does it when i don't shake the can enough and in certain weather conditions.

Ah, the primer. Makes total sense. I use the cheapest primer I can find. I'll try shaking it twice as long as I normally do to see if that helps...and the hot water idea can't hurt either. Although the weather makes more sense in that not all my models have been looking like that. The paint job on my WIP Sternguard Sgt. and Veteran is pretty stinking smooth. We've had bouts of super hot weather and rain lately that might be the culprit.

The staff Crozius idea came from the fluff saying that it was the "Rod of Office" for a Chaplain in addition to it being a weapon. I just pictured it in staff form. Plus having some banner pole arms in my bits box helped too.

Never thought about the marking on the scroll being seen as runic and therefor chaotic. I just wanted a splash of color. I'll see about changing it.

I will see what I can do and post more pics in a bit.

Thanks guys!

Update: I repainted the jump pack to reduce the effect of the primer. I added 3 purity seals and a scroll w/seal. The seal on the "banner" is to obscure the chaos-like symbol. The scroll on the jump pack is there to give some visual interest and to partially obscure the jump pack's primer issues. The two seals on the bolt pistol are there for visual interest and to help solidify his appearance as a Chaplain.

Here is a sneak peek of my Sternguard Sgt. w/Combi-melta WIP. I pretty much like his head. The combi-weapon is over-the-top, I know...and made from two chaos weapons. I want a good number of my Sternguard to have combi-meltas to widen their "kill high-toughness, multi-wound models" role to include the potential to take out a tank if need be.

I'm digging the Swiss Army Bolter. It has a bolter, a melta, a combat knife, a corkscrew, a serrated knife-saw, and a hand grenade, all in 1 convenient device that fits into the palm of your hand. Yours for only 2 easy payments of 29.95*

What can I say? He's a fan of infomercials I guess... I wanted it to look sufficiently specialized and different since he is the Sgt. of my Sternguard...
