How are you doing?

I'm not a Blood Angels player but I do surf the different marine forums to get a feel for the different armies (Black Templar myself).

While playing my buddy who owns a local game store the other day there were a couple of Blood Angles players were observing our game and one of the newer guys was asking about the Templars and we started talking about the BA as well.

My buddy (who get to play a lot of games and against many different armies) commented that he has beaten the couple of BA players pretty handily several times. He is not the kind of guy who is a power gamer or puts out optimized lists but he is very experienced compared to the BA players. He was not bragging either.

He commented that the reason he was because the BA players did exactly what he expected them to do. Bring an army of heavy elites, small army of expensive units, ect... The BA player there agreed with him.

Have you guys fallen into that same trap? Have you guys have more sucess with balanced armies or bringing as much of the new fancy stuff you guys got as you can pack into a list?

The couple of times I played against Space Wolves after their new codex came out I ended up playing against sort of "standard" army lists from the wolves with only a couple of new things thrown in at a time and the games were close games with out any one side seeming to overpower the other. I didnt get the feeling the SW codex was in any way overpowered but my opponent never tried to "bring the cheese either"

How would you guys view you codex and how you make your army lists now that some of the "new" is starting to wear off. Overpowered? Balanced but with some nice bells and whistles?

If you build a balanced and properly thought out list, the Blood Angels codex plays like a more competitive space marine list. If you build an army around the new stuff (with fantastic models) and run multiple squads of sanguinary guard - deepstriking into your opponent's face and hope for the best... then no, not going to do particularly well.

I'm having lots of success with my Blood Angels list - and I don't run a single elite choice.

Also, I'll occasionally run a super silly list - and table people by catching them off guard. But I don't see my silly list being all that competitive. 2 Lascannon/Multi-Melta Stormravens. One carrying a Terminator Reclusiarch, Terminator Sanguinary Priest and allied Grey Knight Terminators. The other carrying a Grey Knight Grandmaster w/ Terminator Retinue and a Terminator Sanguinary Priest. Each one has a Death Company Dread with blood talons, melta gun and magna-grapple. Finish it with 10 death company in a drop pod and you've got a small unit count and incredibly silly 1850 list - but one with the ability to table someone if you have some luck on your side with deployment.

I don't recommend the silly list. LoL.

This is my first BA army and first time with this codex. currently after i tabled a guard player today my score stands at 12 WINS, 4 DRAWS, 8 LOSSES. I think that our codex is fairly balanced and seeing as im not great at making lists i have surprisingly won a lot with a 1740 list which looks a bit like this with different stuff mixed around for different lists:

:HQ:

Libby w/Jump Pack

Honour guard w/ Storm shields, Meltagun, Claws and JP

:)

2 priests w/ JP

Furioso w/ Blood Talons

:HS:

Stormraven w/Extra armour,Multi melta

x2

;)

RAS w/Hammer two meltas

RAS w/PW,IP, 2 flamers

That would be a bases of my 1750 lists.

4W-0L-4D so far, but only against a very good Dark Eldar army, whose bane is the Annihilation mission.

I just recently used Astorath, DC Tycho, Lemartes and Corbulo in what I call my "Superfriends" List, but generally nothing special. My core is 2x10 Tactical Squads w/free ML & Flamer in Rhinos; 1x10 DC w/Reclusiarch & LRR; DC Dread (DP & LB so LRC can DS); 2xBaal Preds. I've added in a TDA Libby w/5xTermies & LRC twice with decent results; also Tycho & HG once; and have used every type of Heavy Support - except Dakka Preds - with disappointing results. I don't plan on ever using Dante, Seth, Mephiston, Sanguinor, SG or SR. Lots of boots and lots of shoots!

I think that while the all shiny toys are what make people cry "foul" at the BA list, including more than one or two of the veteran squads or other toys is going to limit your numbers and won't be a very effective list.

I think that the list is designed to be an elite list, so it will function well with low numbers as long as those low numbers come because you are using sanguinary priests and/or chaplains, and at most 1-2 veterans.

I've been having success with what I think are probably very basic BA lists. One HQ, a small unit of DC, a furioso dread, 2 assault squads, a tactical squad and a couple of Baal Preds as the basis.

I´ve had 3 games with the new dex, 3 wins so far. That might be because of my rather unexperienced opponents and dice-luck, but still, a victory is a victory(They were not THAT unexperienced, but younger than me and therefore with a tad less of experience). Note that it were friendly games only.

New codex has been terrible for my win record. Lost almost everygame I have played against Nids. Mostly due to the fact I have been silly with lists and tried lots and lots of new things, like deep strking landraiders in a planetstrike game with a bunch of terms and corb and a libby stuffed inside. Lost it on a mishap :D Oh how we laughed.

Totally falling into the new trap of all the shiny new toys has not really been a bad thing in my opinion, it has given me a great out look on what units fit my style of play. Seeing as all my games are friendly and not usually competitive it's provided some great times for myself and my nid mate. Epic duels between dante and a trygon prime being among the most tense moments we have had in a game ( JIC you were curious Dante beat it down good then died to a bunch of six Raveners rolling more sixes you would beleive! - Good times!)

I'm at 13 w 1 draw and 4 losses so for, 1 loss with pdf, 2 wins using PDF. My other losses were time out on Apoc games, I tend to lose track of the game, and fail at last minute mad dashes for objectives. I play EVERY game as annihilation, and as such, I almost always have more models than my enemy at the end of the game. Unfortunately, sometimes the objectives really do matter.

BTW, my force All-star, is a Heavy Bolter Marine. He weathered and survived over 20 genestealers in assault(2 rounds of it at that, last man standing, broke, got away, regrouped and put bullets in their Xenos backsides as they moved on to the IG snack buffet next to me), and 2 rounds of Tau focus fire, tackled 5 Fire Warriors, 1 Crisis suit, and krak grenaded 2 hammerheads. All in the same game. He has yet to fall in battle.

This guy has a special place in my heart.

I'm a College student and putting myself through school so money is, and has been pretty tight for a couple years now. I've had my BA successor Chapter done for about... 3 years, give or take a few months. Seeing that I'm so strapped for cash I just adapted what I had to the new dex. Furioso dread to Talons, Veteran Assault marines to normal Assault marine, Vanguard sometimes if I'm feeling lucky and like having an almost 300+ point squad.... yuck. I have the old DC models, the metal models that came in a box with one guy with a power sword. When they said that DC got rending and no power weapons I just always said he had a chainsword. Giving DC power weapons again was awesome, but now I have to model more guys with swords and repaint them, ugg. My record now against Dark Eldar, Space Wolves, and Orks is 8 wins, 0 loss. Now these are not competitive at all, just me and friends playing, but I feel that BA have a pretty rock solid list. Falling into the Sanguinary Guard army is something I told myself I would not do, the models look awesome and I want to buy a couple, but the army is done and I don't want to buy anymore, no matter how shiny. Now I just have to wait to get enough money to put together a Grey Knights force.
My current record -against- BA is 13/2/0 (Win Loss Draw), a significantly lower number than against the PDF (53/31/8). I tend to play against either Mech (2-3 Vindie, 2-3 Baals) or High Elite (Massive amounts of Jump packers) enemies, the latter normally inclusive of Mephy or Astorath. Take that how you will, I suppose.

We don't really have any Space Wolves around, and I think they have some of the best counters to Blood Angels units.

That isn't to say other armies don't have stuff to take on my BA's... some stuff *really* screws with me (nothing quite like Thraka or a Seer Council to stomp on Mephiston). I've mostly just been trying out all the shiny toys available... but you can't fit them all into one or two lists. It's going to require some solid game time for me to get a handle on what really fits me.

I haven't even used a unit of Sanguinary Guard yet.. I really want to try the army of'em though.

Maybe its who I'm playing, maybe its luck, but I haven't lost in a long time now. I was winning a lot with the old pdf list and MM attack bikes and I'm having more luck than ever now. I wouldn't call our codex overpowered, especially compared to other recent codexs like SWs with their underpriced Grey Hunters. But I like it, a lot. You really can field losts of different lists so it really suits someone who wants to buy it all like me.
