Fysh
I'm thinking of painting my gold figures with a red wash and I'm curious as to if anyone else has tried it before? I'm pretty sure I remember reading a post about someone giving it a go, but I couldn't find any. Please post pics of your minis if possible! Thanks guys Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/203973-metallic-red-models/ Share on other sites
SnorriSnorrison
One wash won´t be enough, I am afraid. Baal Red, for example, has a pinkish appearance, and you´d need several layers to get a darker finish. Then, gold is not the perfect foundation for red, and if you wash your gold minis with Baal Red, they´ll probably have a copper tone. I am sorry, but no pics. I´ve never tried this before, this is just my assumption. angel of justice
I would test it on a peace of sprue before you do it to a miniature, Red ink over burnished gold after a few layers produces a very nice effect but you need to let each layer dry properly and be careful with it, i haven't tried it with washes yet. Fysh
I think you may be right Snorri, this is what I was worried about. I think it would look great if done right, I personally don't like the pure gold look and I would like to try something a bit different. Perhaps if I try as Angel mentions and use a few coats it'll get bit further from the pink. What was the difference between the old ink and the current washes? I have a black ink, but not a red unfortunately. Actually thinking on it I wonder if perhaps a silver base would be a better choice Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/203973-metallic-red-models/#findComment-2431927 Share on other sites
wookielips
my recommendation is to make your own washes. mix baal red with black, i'd say 2:1 red:black, get a deep maroon you like, then mix that paint with 3 or 4 parts water:paint. i'd do a test (read:trash) mini first, the thinner the wash the more coats you need, but the more subtle the effect you get. What was the difference between the old ink and the current washes? I have a black ink, but not a red unfortunately. Actually thinking on it I wonder if perhaps a silver base would be a better choice 1. Well, the old inks are not water-resistant, so if paint over a layer of ink with a quite small amount of water in your paint, the inks will flow away with the water. Aditionally, the washes give you a matte finish, which inks don´t. Very useful for tabletop miniatures, or quick painting. 2. If you want to paint red over metallics(which I wouldn´t advise) then it is better to use silver than gold - but mix your washes with black to get the deep red tone without applying 10 washes. Badab Black and Baal Red should do fine, the combination of the two is a miracle to me as well, so better ask somebody with more experience on this specific topic. :P Snorri Edit: Ninja´d by wookielips on no. 2... Fysh
Thanks guys I'll look into seeing how some of these ideas work and perhaps even post some of the results if I get off my butt! Chaplain Hiltraud
I've tried red wash on gold and it came out a treat! Like a nice rose gold. I can't remember if I used devlan mud before or after the baal red but either way I do recall putting about 2-3 layers of baal red. I've also tried working from a silver base with the washes but after about 4-5 coats of baal red it ended up looking something that would be suitable for a slaanesh marine, it came out a pink sort of colour and not red at all. However, asurman blue wash over silver looks great... Personally, I use devlan mud (and thraka green in the recesses) on my gold. This technique gives a very old feel to the armour... Terminatorinhell
What I would do is base Boltgun Metal, then wash with devlan mud then 3-4 washes of baal red. Should give a nice red.
