Played Space Cursade for the first time

I was at a mates place the other day after University and he pulled out a copy of Space Crusade. I immediately deamded a game. We didn't quite get the rules, took a while to set up and spent ages picking sides but all in all it was a good game. His Imperial Fist with plasma gun shot through 3 rooms to insta-gib a chaos lord. But with our space crusade/40k rule fusion we almost lost. Almost all of my Blood Angels were killed by the Dreadnought, but I killed a scouting "android" for a bonus objective.

Space Crusade is awesome!

It was my first contact into the 40K universe and I still got it stashed away, even though many of the models are missing. Haha now that you mentioned it, I remember those Androids, maybe those bad boys will make it to the next Necron 'dex. :D

It's essentially the first iteration of Space Hulk correct?

One minor point. As far as 40K goes, Rogue Trader came out 3 years before Space Crusade. Sorry, I'm stickler for history. :)

edit: oops. Space Hulk 1st ed predates Space Crusade. My bad.

In a way Space Crusade was GWs first try to reach a biggwer audience.

In Germany it was pretty horrifying because it had been kiddy-fied, as not to offend parents and such. Lascannons were giant lightsouces which blinded the opponents and took them out of combat, meltas glues them to the floor.. you get the picture.

There were some small expansion stuff in WD, and 2? boxed ones, Dreadnoughts with 4 weapons and Eldar. The Eldar models were the first ones with a shuriken cannon, and a Dire Avenger like leader.

I played it and its successor Advanced Space Crusade quite a lot.

Good times.

I recently got my Advanced Space Crusade down from the attic and started painting all the minis. The scouts have that nice queer feel that some vintage GW stuff got with the ear rings, puffy shirts adn facepaints. Its like a loveparade - pride festival thing :-)

Advanced Space Crusade is an amazing game. You can play it with all the minis from the game on it's own, use any of the space crusade or space hulk minis or add most of the regular marine units to the game in a campaign to destroy the hive ship. Marines heroes are a bit over powered though and best left out.

I'm currently in the process of building a three dimensional board for the game for the ammobunker forum bash at warhammer world next year with truescale marines instead of scouts.

Great thing about it is that it has full rules for using space hulk tiles instead of the hive ship so you can combine the two. You can even play marines vs chaos marines and in later supplements in WD fight campaigns with Imperial Guard or Orks invading a hive ship.

Space Crusade was joint effort with MB games and was a fun game along with the add ons. I still play the computer version from time to time.

Advanced Space Crusade was designed to be a more in depth version of Space Crusade, Tyranid Attack used the same playing pieces but was designed as one of the introduction range of games that came out later.

So you had Heroquest and Space Crusade that were released via M B Games whilst Games Workshop released Advanced Heroquest and Advanced Space Crusade.

Later they bought out Ultramarines, Tyranid Attack, Space Fleet (forerunner to Battle Fleet Gothic) and a couple of others that were designed to introduce people to war gaming but were basically simpler versions of the likes of space hulk, advanced space crusade, blood bowl, etc.

Space Crusade was my introduction to 40k (was into Heroquest before that) and its a great game, you dont need a hundred painted minis to get down to the bizz.

Just recently I scored a complete copy (my original went to hell during my later teen years) and Im looking forward to getting right back into it-using some old WD rules and a heap of old school models Ive got.

I too used to play this loads, was one of my earliest wargaming experiences, as my elder cousin who collected space wolves used to play this with me. I always dreamed of nabbing his copy of this and blood bowl, but it never happened.

Then, some years later, I'm working part time in a bar over the summer holidays of uni, and I wander into the charity shop next door on my break to find a complete and pristine copy of Space Crusade, including the dreadnought expansion, for 50p! Needless to say I bought it on the spot and it's been with me ever since. I get it out now and then, it's still an enjoyable game now.
