Which chapter to choose?

Recommended Posts

Hello guys and galls :)

Im getting back into this awsome hobby, but I just can't manage to choose a chapter for my SM army. So I want to ask all of you out there which chapter do you think I should choose based on a painting view on the hobby? Im looking for a chapter that aint super hard to paint, since im a terrible painter.

- Sorry for the messy text, regards Humør

Ultramarines are easy to paint - Blue base coat, dark blue wash ... ta-daa!

But you can choose any chapter, and paint your models whatever colour you like - Blue Dark Angels, Red Space Wolves, Green Black Templars etc.

Call it a DIY chapter, Successor, off-shoot or just "I like Green, and want to play Wolves!"

Well, a lot depends on what you want to accomplish. If you want to try your hands at a lot of schemes you could do some form of "Marine Alliance" and paint figures from all sorts of chapters; if you want a simple scheme then ultramarines are excellent.

Making your own chapter is always fun too, of course.

My quick notes on colors:

- White/Yellow are known to be troublesome to get a nice even coat on.

- Red can also be a challenge; but not nearly as bad and foundation paints really help here. (Orange and brown are similar)

- Blue is pretty easy

- Green can be easy, but I've had mixed results with 'dark angels green' from GW (pigment separates really easily.); so I might go for a lighter shade

- Black is easy to do, but hard to make look totally awesome

- Purple is pretty easy

With that in mind, trying to keep it easy some good chapters might be:

Blues: Ultramarines, Crimson Fists, Space Wolves

Purples: Hawk Lords, Pre-heresy Alpha Legion

Blacks: Iron Hands, Relicators, Black Templars

As a Salamanders player I suggest going green.Snot Green is a very easy to paint color and the secondary color is black.Only problem is the highlights with scorpion green, which is a bit harder to control.

I would also suggest the Ultramarines, blue is easy as well.

It all depends how much time you want to put into your painting. If you're going for a nice tabletop, I'd suggest you take a look at the colored primers from The Army Painter. They're like happyness in a spraying can, I only recently discovered them, and I personally won't be going back to GW. They got colors to cover most marine chapters, so getting a nice even basecoat isn't the problem it once was. While you're there, also check out their Quickshade product, it's great for quickly making the details on your minis pop.

Two things in GW's paints range is also worth having a look at: their Foundation paints, and their range of washes. Combined they offer a powerful tool for starting painters. You can pair up a Foundation paint and a wash to cover most of your needs; for example the Iyanden Darksun can be paired with the Gryphonne Sepia wash to get a nice dirty yellow. Highlight with a 'traditional' paint and you're golden.

As you see, the color isn't a huge issue any more these days. Just ask yourself what color you would like, and if you see yourself painting that color scheme on 40+ minis.

Before you decide, you can also check out YouTube for how-to video's. For marines, AwesomePaintjob are totally worth looking at, since you get to see the techniques used and results obtained in one video. Most popular chapters are already covered, and more content is still being added.

I have decided that I want a chapter that focuses on close quarter fighting, but I don't really know which chapter that specialises in this and which colours they use :D Could you galls and guys please mentione some close quarter chapters and their colours? :D

Hope this helps

Recently on another thread I saw someone suggest painting up a blue themed bloodangels successor and calling them the "blue bloods". I thought it was awesome at the time and so it's a suggestion for ya ;) I also think a nice blood-drop-gem would look really good against the right shade of blue.

I have painted a bunch of chapters, by far these are the 3 easiest in this order:

Salamanders (con's are hard to freehand a dragon head and decals are a pain)

Raven Guard (con is no decals available, hard to get decent freehanded hawk)

Dark Angels (No cons?...)

All of these take a black basecoat. Salamanders get a coat or two of green for the armor and then you can fill in the details that all chapters have. (Eyes, aquilas etc.) It's also very easy and fast to get tabletop salamanders.

Ravenguard get the red shoulder pad outline on the left or right pad, can't remember. They also have the ravenguard symbol on their other shoulder (you have to freehand it though). Fill in cross-chapter details...

Darkangels get 2-4 dry brushes of dark green and 1 dry brush of a brighter green. Chapter symbol has decals and is fairly easy to free hand.

This is over simplifying but it should give you the gist (right word?) of it.
