@ Chris Wraight: Thank you for your blog's part on getting published. I am a budding author myself and the tips help me keep focussed with a plan etc. If you don't mind me asking, how many attempts did you have at getting published/accepted for commission?

After failing a few times to land a 40K commission by sending proposals in cold (yup, we all learn the hard way), I entered one of the short story competitions. I was lucky enough to get picked for the Invasion! anthology, and that was followed up with a novel called Masters of Magic. There have been a couple more books since then, all set in WHFB setting. Sword of Justice, the first in a new line, has just come out, and its follow-up has also been written.

It's a hard gig to break into, sure, but keep at it. Writing is one of those things you can get better at with practice and feedback, and there are opportunities out there.

Well actually, they are not the greatest. They are just the worst learners and always come back after they get their ...urm... backparts handed to them, finely chopped with frostblades and pre-chewed by thunderwolves. You could almost say that Magnus is a masochist who enjoys being smacked, broken, humiliated and stabbed in the eye over and over again.

I'm so looking forward to see the big ol' Bjorn's claw smash the red fellow to the ground.

Actually Magnus and Bjorn never fought. The only person that Magnus fought was the Great Wolf.

Could it really be so? I don't have my codex with me but lexicanum seems to agree with you... Damn, I could swear I had read some fluff in which Bjorn surged to aid the losing Harek and managed to land a blow with his power claw that wounded Magnus.

Indeed. I know it is a common excuse we all hear and make, but I really do have problems with time at present. An 18 month old son, a soul-sapping occupation and regular boxing training often combines to make it a slog to get motivated and the work I do produce is often below my own high standards.

However, seeing your "story" I can see there is hope to those who persevere. Maybe not immediately but over the course of a few years it will pay off.

So on that I can actually say reading such comments and support from real published authors is a great help. It reminds me that authors are human too and aren't so far removed from me.

no the wolf lord landed the blow wounding Magnus. Bjorn had nothing to do with it.bjorn was awoken to help in the defence (as the silly wolf lord went off on a hunt) so the fang was under manned, bjorn rallied the defenders blowing up tunnels and taking the outnumbered SW deaper into the fang, when the wolf lord came back the 1K sons were trapped between them and the defenders. Thus the 1k sons were defeated. thoses that escaped did not survive long in the fenrision wilderness

Well Chris, I must say I've not heard of you as of yet. I do like the way newer authors such as you and ADB are getting stuck into the community side of things go, so as far as first impressions go, that'd be a good one.

On the wider issue of the Space Marine Battles Novels, I didn't read Rynn's World because (a) The Crimson Fists aren't my cup of tea and (:) I couldn't find many decent reviews of it. Helsreach, I bought solely on the basis of how awesome Soul Hunter was. I wasn't disappointed.

The Battle of the Fang has the potential to be fantastic reading - a desperate last stand that actually, isn't so desperate. After all, we know where it's going, and how it'll end - so the trick is to make us care about the characters. Even A Thousand Sons, despite the occasion plodding bit, got me to empathise with Ahriman, and as a staunch Wolf that took a wee bit of doing.

But on your blog, you cite Helsreach as an example of how to do it right. So... I'll be waiting for this one. Eagerly.
