Ultramarines

Hi guys & gals,

Thought i should throw some of my work out there, and hopefully help people paint a better Ultramarine or in turn give me hints & tips to improve. I've had a fairly long break from the hobby (since 2nd. Ed.) and having come back i saw that Ultra's have really been beefed up by GW; not only with the inclusion of the Tyranid lore but by adding a very strong Helenic/Romanic feel to them, and i am an absolute sucker for all things Roman Legion based (too many swords & sandals epics as a kid and simon scarrow books!), so that was the clincher for me.

Please excuse the quality of photo's, one of the reason's i'm here to learn how to take better photo's as well and modelling, painting and crafting tips. Feedback is always appreciated, and if you want to know anything else please do ask. I'll talk a little about my colours as i go through.

Assault Terminators:

Base colours are nothing out of the ordinary for Ultra's; Mordian blue base, with an Aurmen Blue wash, Ultramrines blue as the block colour, as something a little different I went with a highlight up to Ice Blue as opposed to Space Wolves Grey for a more stylized feel.

The Crux Terminatus was based with Adeptus Battlegrey, with a badad black wash them blocked with 70/30 Codex Grey/Adeptus Battlegrey and highlighted with fortress grey.

I had to lash out on the Forgeworld resin Chapter iconography for Terminators, it's just rude not to! :)

Ultra's Chaplain:

This fella will be pouring out of a Land Raider with the AT's.

I have drilled my bolter barrells out since this photo was taken ........ and after getting pointed and laughed at by GW staff (all good natured!) :)

Those are some really nice Ultramarines right there. Very clean and crisp, and your highlights look very nice! Kudos.

It's really good when you see a very well done Ultramarines army. I think it gives something to show up the Ultramarines nay-sayers, and yours certainly do that. Who can argue that Ultras are boring when they look that good?!?

When you say highlight up to ice blue, are you mixing Ultramarines with the ice blue to get a smoother transition or are you just using pure ice blue?

Either way they are fantastic looking ultras, thats the kind of style and look that i aspire for my 4th compnay ultras to look like

kudos to you! The only improvement i could suggest is that your bases look a little plain, and a little dull (at least for my tastes!)

Cheers...

Yeah, i followed a somewhat out dated guide to start with and chaged bits here & there. Big Jim's Ultramarine painting guide (3rd ed?) over on Dystartes.com. After the flat/block Ultra's blue on the plate sections mix a heavily watered down 60/40 Ultra's blue to Ice Blue, and go about 2mm around the edge you're going to highlight, then 60/40 Ice blue to Ultra's blue (again, very heavily watered down) and re-apply but 1mm in to get the blending and soft highlight. Then hardline highlight with watered down Ice Blue.

Agreed on the basing. This Army is the first time i've even tried basing, so i thought i'd just start basic and then add on that as i get the hang of the rudimentries, i do use them on the table, so don't want to go compo illegal for basing.

How did you find the FW resin pads to be, quality-wise? I've heard horror stories about bent/shrunk parts from FW, but wasn't sure if it applied to the smaller bitz like pads. How did yours turn out?

Not too bad at all - they fit well to the plastics with no problems. Although all i've done is buy the bitz packs from GW & FW for infantry; i haven't picked up any of the chapter specific doors for the Rhino models & Land Raider and extra armour packs so can't comment on them.

The FW shoulder pads are great I thirty of them for my Crimson Fists and they add a nice flair to the terminators. Also check out chapterhousestudios.com for some cool tactical, assault, and devastors shoulder pads with the numbers on them unlike GW's. As an added bonus CHS shoulder pads have a lot less flash then GW (all my CF marines have GW, FW and CHS shoulder pads when available).

Great looking ultras the FC is great with the red cloak
