Jarl Bloodwolf
I am looking into painting armor as if it was grey stone. I am still looking for the type of stone so I can post an example, the paint scheme I am going for is stone armor with bronze details and orange eyes that look like they are glowing. Anyone done the stone armor and can help me out? or have any ideas on how to do it? Allerka
Not sure how well it'd work on the smooth surfaces of Marine armor, but on my rock bases I generally use Astronomicon Gray, a wash of Devlan Mud, and then a light drybrush of Dheneb Stone. Comes out pretty well. You can probably experiment with different colors on the initial basecoat for different shades. Obliterator
What I usually do to get a stone effect is stipple on the highlights. Basecoat the model in scorched brown, then stipple on Graveyard Earth, then Kommando Khaki, and then a light Bleached Bone drybrush to pick out the details. This should give you a nice concrete-ish stone. Key is to stipple until you get almost an even basecoat, and not overload the brush with paint. The stippling effect make for some variation in the color, and make it look like the typical grainy texture you find on stones. I find that doing this with 'pure' greys often doesn't look natural, and you would need some brown and green washes to make it look like a convincing stone.
