commander alexander
Well, just this last Sunday, I played my first real game with wolves. It was at 1500 pts, so I took 4 packs of drop podding grey hunters, a death-star of Logan+Longfangs podding and an wolf mounted Iron priest. This was played against a friends Imperial Guard, and of course he likes to have vehicular firepower. Essentially it was a long drawn-out battle that I lost, but I had fun :) . He had a Medusa, vendetta, Valkyrie, a pair of some hell hound variants, and two chimera transports, using mostly vet squads. The skimmers were held in reserve to outflank, and his hell hounds where just held in reserve. So heres what I learned; -Logan and melta long fangs is a scary unit to have pod up behind your tanks, but it is not an optimal selection if you want to have Logan used for tank popping. It would have been better to have the unit kitted with lascannons using tank hunters rule to be popping tanks since turn one, preferably in cover. -Take out the infantry first in a guard army, Logan and the long fangs where plenty to get rid of the tanks on the table. It would have been better to have my packs all be kitted with flamers, and smack down on the two of the three objectives my opponent controlled in cover. -Get rid of hell hound variant quickly, they are very nasty and are a very real threat to marines. The way my opponent deployed his vehicles, I should have easily been able to take them all out (had I gone with lascannons). -Had I been smart, I would have kept my Iron Priest in the corner (where the last objective was in cover) because he of course used the Valkyrie to deliver an outflanking vet squad. The Iron priest would have been easily in charging range of the Valkyrie. Although aftter the game my opponent amused me after the game and let me play out a round of combat with the Iron Priest. I tell you what, an Iron Priest on a thunder wolf with cyberwolves sure hits hard, and being able to use the rending attacks instead of the thunderhammer, it sure made a difference against a unit with power weapons at a lower initiative. Godhead
I might disagree with choosing the flamers. IG can pack so much mech firepower that you might find yourself in need of EVERY melta you can get your hands on. I definitely agree with putting logan in a group of long fangs sporting lascannons for tank hunters. There are definitley times where, yeah, even with a full complement of Meltas, I just couldn't crack enough tanks. Some builds use less tanks and more footsloggers, though. I will say, however, that if you're close enough to fire a flamer, you're close enough to charge, and in all likelihood, firing a flamer is unnecessary to wipe a squad of Guardsmen out in one turn if you're assaulting. -Stormshrug Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/204245-my-first-real-game-with-space-wolves/#findComment-2435604 Share on other sites
