Cornishman
I know there are many, many threads (both here and on other forums) regarding finding substitutes for the old GW ink range however I haven't had much luck in finding any suitable for my use from them. I have been using yellow and chestnut ink to glaze metallic’s, specifically dwarf bronze to create an intense reddy-bronze far shinier than the usual that given by GW-Metallics. Many of the suggested substitutes don’t give that highly glossy, shiny finish of the GW inks. Does anyone know of suitable substitutes which are not just a close match not just in colour, but in finish too? Cornishman
Coat d'Arms do all of GWs old paints, including the inks. Thats what I had heard. So I have already tried to Coat d'Arms Yellow Ink Wash (and chestnut ink wash) and they are very different entities from thier GW name sakes. Compared to the old GW ink the coat d'arms yellow ink doesn't give any sort of glossy finish at all, and looks more like a very thin yellow paint. So when I tried to use the yellow ink for instance, rather than really bringing out the metallic nature of the dwarf bronze, making it appear almost golden it really dulled down the metallic making it look rather grubby. This grubby, matte finish was then componded further when a chestnut ink wash was put over it, which is exactly the opposite effect of the one I am after. The look I am aiming for can be seen on this thread from the WIP section. Post 6 shows how the GW inks brought out the 'golden' look of the dwarfbronze (on the Sternguard, before chestnut ink glaze) and then how this is transformed into the final red-bronze by the chestnut ink glaze (on the tactical marines, and sternguard later in the thread) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/204287-gw-ink-substitutes/#findComment-2436339 Share on other sites
Shieldwall
Mix some gloss varnish into the glaze or wash you're using. You might like the effect. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/204287-gw-ink-substitutes/#findComment-2436587 Share on other sites
