Space Wolf background/fluff

Hey B&C,

The campaign that me and my friends will be playing soon, will feature four races. Tau, Eldar, a mercenary/traitor/fallen Dark Angel IG company and me with my Space Wolves. We'll be playing on a 'paradise' planet, with lush jungles but also harsh deserts (and maybe some snow :P).

This planet is probably suitated somewhere near the Tau Empire, and the Tau are either natives or trying to colonise this -until now- undiscovered pearl.

The Fallen Dark Angel IG mercenary company ( ) player has posted his background in the Dark Angel forums (Click me!) He does not have a reason to be on this planet yet, but we feel that we could somehow connect it to my company venturing all the way to the Tau Empire.

The Eldar player does not have a clear reason to be there yet, but states that Eldar are always trying to influence things, and that that is a good enough reason to be there. (So he'll be your generally annoying git... eldar.)

That is what we've got so far. I'm having trouble making up anything original, and hoped you might be able to help me on my way.

Thanks!

Since the Space Wolves are big on heroics and fighting for the Imperium's Citizens rather than the High Lords, what about the Tau having had a mercenary monster that resembles a Carnifex (for example) and it is plaguing the Citizenry as a preliminary tactic to their invasion to demoralise the population. Sensing a chance for glory, your Wolf Lord leads his Great Company against the Tau forces in search of the Monster, but by now the monster has disappeared/been slain, and the Wolves stand ready to defend the planet against the nascent Tau forces....

Tau colonizing things sounds perfect.

Eldar:

In the HH series book, Fulgrim, the Eldar are shown to have "paradise worlds" that they are keeping pristine and away from other races. Their whole purpose is so that SHOULD the Eldar find a way to acquire peace, they will have unspoiled worlds on which to try and re-populate their dying species. If the Tau show up, the Eldar would try to shoo them away using force as a last resort.

IG:

Since they are renegade being led blindly by a Fallen, they are on the run from the larger Imperium. If they are to be on a planet that the Tau are colonizing, this is probably near the Ultramar Segmentum. (Across the galaxy from Fenris.) Odds are good that they would be pirating rogue traders and merchants in order to get conscripts/supplies/munitions/ships they cannot purchase/recruit for their group... which would potentially draw you in.

Wolves:

Leman Russ long ago made a pact with the Navis Nobilitae (Navigators) House Belisarius [Wolfblade]. The pact was that the Wolves would be provided with the BEST navigators. Instead of paying the navigators notoriously high costs, Russ traded something something more valuable... Honor. As the navigators would serve the Wolves, so would the Wolves serve them by providing 100 or so of their Legion/Chapter to serve as elite guard for House Belisarius and to train their house troops in Astartes tactics. The Wolfblade would serve on Terra and anywhere the navigators would need them, but if the situation was needed the entire chapter could be brought in to aide the navigators. As the millennia passed, House Belisarius grew very powerful and rich thanks to its partnership with the Space Wolves. They branched out their enterprises to beyond just being navigators, owning many different corporations and worlds [sons of Fenris].

Now, if the rebel IG are attacking Belisarius ships coming/going from one of their holdings in that segmentum, Belisarius wouldn't call the Ultramarines despite that being their "jurisdiction". They would invoke the ancient pact of Russ, as war against Belisarius means war against the Space Wolves. By badgering the wrong ships, the Fallen IG just brought down the wrath of the Fenris.

After a great company fleet shows up, and defends the merchant fleet, the IG would be out gunned, wounded, and on the run. The world could either be their base of pirate operations or they could just crash land there after a battle in orbit.

That's my thoughts. Take 'em, do whatever you want with it.

I like your take on it, apart from the very last bit.

Elder have created the perfect paradise world.

The Tau on there conquest of the greater good find this planet and decide it would be great for colonizing, to which the Elder find out and return.

The IG on hearing that the House Belisarius is upgrading their protection for their ships and maybe setting up a trap, decide its time to find softer targets and notice the build up of Tau.

A Wolf Lord on hearing the trouble with the House Belisarius offers his help and sends out a pack of scouts to find out what's happening. On receiving some good information of the fallen IG, The Wolf Lord sets his course. Not only will he bring the the fallen IG to justice, he will give the House Belisarius a whole new world and for his name to never be forgotten.

How will it end?

well the eldar part sounds obvious, so i'll forward that.

the tau colonising a paradise world seems reasonable too.. after all, who wouldn't want a uncolonised (almost) perfect world with lots of resources.

space wolves countering on merchant shipping raids from the mercs/pirates sounds logical, especially if most of the merchants feature belisarius's navigators. or are from the houses own merchant fleet.

as for the mercenaries themselves.. as tau recruit mercenaries its pretty viable that they will sign up for the campain there.

it also suits the fallen, trying to place the tau between him and the space wolves so that he can escape retribution for harrasing the merchants

(especially if he knew the ships were from belisarius :P ) dealing the imperium a blow while keeping their own losses to a minimum

tau/mercs invading eldar paradise world puts them against each other (and otherwise a little provocing would do the trick)

space wolves vs aliens is standard. same goes for heretics.

and after the mercs show their true intent (or finding out they were the ones behind the merchant raids or some other detail) the tau would have their retribution.

and that sums up the start of a hopefully good campain..
