Wulfen with a marine mind?

Recommended Posts

this is just my two cents, but I was under the impression that those with Mark of the Wulfen are somewhat in control of their actions and able to direct their fury, unlike, say... Death Company, who have the Rage special rule.

I don't know what a full blown 13th company wulfen would be like, though.

Yes. There are the Wulfen that roam the lands on Fenris and kill Bloodclaws for fun. There are the 13th Company Wulfen that do just fine with a bit extra rage. And there are those with the Mark of the Wulfen. I would believe that those with Motw change mid fight and go more beastal but are still marines with all of their mental powers still intact.

As I understand it, there are somewhat conflicting accounts of the Curse of the Wulfen in the fluff.

In the novels, it's depicted inconsistently - sometimes, it's treated as a one-way street, like the Black Rage of the Blood Angels, and other times, it seems to be reversible, at least up to a certain point. This probably comes from having multiple writers to a degree, although there is some inconstency even within the Lee Lightner works. Perhaps it's supposed to be ambiguous, or not always the same for each individual Some Space Wolves can tap into the feral predator within to a greater degree, or are more at home in that state. Some can return from the edge of madness, and others can't. In the novels, Ragnar Blackmane himself is often described as a fairly cool and calculating commander, but when he finds himself on the front lines, the instincts of the wolf take over and he becomes one of the most ferocious and daring warriors on the battlefield.

In the 5th edition codex, it's implied to be a transformation (of the body, the mind, or both) that occurs on the battlefield, as even some Wolf Lords are rumored to be touched by the Mark of the Wulfen. GW gives a lot of leeway in terms of what this means, I think because they want players to imagine it on their own.

I find the idea that each Space Wolf has his own relationship with the beast within more appealing than a uniform case, since it fits with the SW motifs of individuality and personal empowerment, and since the lore is sort of all over the place...

I'd say you're probably fine in having a character afflicted by some or all of the Mark's physical symptoms full-time but not always under the sway of the wolf within. He'd probably have to wear a helmet, or at least shave, when not with other Space Wolves, though. :D

If you heard the Audio book "Thunder from Fenris" the wulfen actually still has some marine memories attached and will still at time do things that marines do (lead thier brothers into where the enemy is hiding and also fight thier previous enemies etc)

and yes theres a difference between Mark of the wulfen and a real Wuflen

The former is angrier than normal and doesnt care for its own safety in a fight , while the later is simply a crazy mofo that is also Physically more enhanced compared to a normal marine
