Anybody got any Raid?

I got in a 1750 game against the bugs today. Tabled him in 5 turns, but it actually looked pretty hairy for a while. We played a really weird battle mission that broke up the board into 6 zones (easy since it was on a realm of battle board). Each zone had an objective at its center. Then I had to deploy everything, radomizing where I had to place each unit with a dice role for each unit to be placed in one of the 6 zones. He had to randomize which board edge his dudes arrived from in the same way I did. I got to place 3 units in the same zone which was nice, but then his Hive Tyrant and 3 Guards showed up in the same place. Some 13 Genestealers also arrived there, but went after another objective. A Trygon also arrived nearby. You gotta love Wolves on the counter attack...

Any non-vehicle unit could hold an objective, not just troops, which didn't work to my advantage with all my vehicles, but it didn't matter. In the end I held 4 objectives.

I got really unlucky, having my Redeemer annihilated early and then the GH's inside got pinned as a result. He then got unlucky and wiffed his Hive Tyrant's attacks. My Wolf Lord finished killing a Trygon that mauled a GH pack in an adjacent zone, and then saved the day by charging and killing the second Trygon. He finally arrived to challenge the Hive Tyrant, but my remaining GHs and a Wolf Scout pack hiding in a nearby building killed him before the Lord could finish him off.

Power Fists ROCK. A must have on any and all Tactical Squads, Assault Squads, Grey Hunters, etc.

The hero of the battle is probably my 2 Vindicators though. They hung out in the middle of the board, raining down massive shells: killing 3 Raveners, 12ish Genestealers, and 12 Hormagaunts. They killed enough ;) to prevent them from reaching my other units.

All in all an awesome game. It was my first battle against Tyranids with the new dex.

As a player just getting to grips with my new Tyranid army, I have found objective holding to be the hardest part.

My marines, who can camp on an objective in a rhino for protection against long range attack, then jump out and circle the obj. at 2", preventing the enemy even getting close, and pouring merry bolter hell on them as they approach, are vastly better at objective taking.

My 'Nids have lost every 2+D3 objective game I've played, and won every Kill Point one.

I have found that 'Nids need a much more strategically planned game, as every unit is excellent for one job, and hopeless at everything else; ironically, I was expecting the opposite when I started collecting them: I thought it would be mad bugs and instinctive misbehaviour!

I am happy for you that you enjoyed the game, but I would question whether 6 objectives and random deployment didn't favour the highly adaptable marines, especially Wolves?

How about a re-match, but with a film-style narrative: 6 objectives, random Space Wolf deployment, but the Tyranid player starts the whole game in reserve?

"Responding to the distress beacon, the Drop ships delivered the Wolf company to the last recorded transmission of the settlers. Violent electrical storms and aerial attacks by the Great Devourer's Harpies had thrown the company's planetfall into disarray.

"The Rune Priest cast his runes, and ascertained the location of six survivors: they appeared to be very close, but as the Wolf Lord ordered his men to move in on their positions, he heard movement in the distance.

"Slight rustling in the long grass seemed to be coming from all around them, and maybe they could get to the ruins before the xenos swarm cleared the cover, but suddenly he felt a familiar rumbling sound under his feet..."

Every survivor/objective you hold is a point to you, every contested one a draw, every 'Nid-held or abandoned a point to the Bug player?!? ^_^

This is the imperium, no one gives a ^_^ about 6 survivors. It wouldn't matter if the 6 survivors were the planetary governor, the guard commander, the highest priest of the eclisiarchy in the sector, a admech magus, a fleet admiral, and the Emperors third cousin. If you're anything short of a high lord of Terra or a Lord Innquisitor, they aren't sending Astartes to save your :yuck: on a bug infested planet. That's got =][= exterminatus written all over it.

Inquisitor Vox to Survivors: "Oh... You're alive down there you say Governor.... sorry about your luck."

**pushes big red button**

to the Tyranids advantage, they start the whole game off the baord, and have the option to enter with everything in turn 1 or to leave things in reserve. They also get the first turn automatically, so with their fleeting models are able to get to grips in the first turn. His Trygon got off a lucky shot in turn 1, wrecking a Rhino, and then assaulted the GH's inside. The real disadvantage for Tyranids is their lack of assault grenades. Holding objectives in cover saved my ass...

And bring on the rematch!!
